I'm only like... 2 weeks late. But here are some after pics.

ps I'm awful at taking pictures so maybe someone has some tips or tricks to achieving a better than below average shot? :D

Very nice.

In terms of photography, the lighting is good, but maybe try finding a bare wall to use as a blank backdrop.

Either way, there's never anything wrong with including a Mando or two in a photo!

Those get the general point across.

Possibly you could ADD some closeup pics, one each of the bridge and the headstock, so that we can see in detail how the strings sit at each location. ;)

Is that the Kickass bridge ?

I viewed the brief YouTube clip which you [or someone] posted a few days ago, of how things went for a person who put the Kickass bridge and short scale Rotosound flats onto a Mini-P, and the strings sat rather well, all things considered.

So anyone who tries 32" [but not longer] wrap strings with that bridge on a Mini-P should expect reasonable results.

I posted that video, and soon I'll be able to verify it.

I just received the Kickass bridge, and should be receiving the Rotosound RS88S strings in 2 or 3 weeks. (fingers crossed)

Stay tuned!

Wow, long thread!
Finally got through it and am much better informed than I was when I got here.
Thanks!

Got a few things to add/ask:
At this point, I would settle for a way to get a pink Squier Bronco bass into Canada, without costing a king's ransom or jail time.

They are sitting en masse in EU and GB warehouses, and almost nobody who CAN order one even wants one.
Pink Broncos are back up for pre-order at CME (and their Reverb store page) with an estimated ship date of 02/15/2022.
That's much closer than across the pond!

I don't mind having to do that on these ultra-cheap guitars, I actually welcomed the opportunity to learn some guitar tech stuff because it allowed me to work on my pricier instruments with confidence.
Well said, this articulates how I look at it.
The question I wanna ask is why can't Fender file the fret ends on its overpriced MIM instruments and dry the necks properly, even on expensive MIAs? But that's for another thread :)
Don't get me started, I had given up on the brand totally (Fender and Squier). Tried a couple different cheap Squiers, and they were really bad. Useless tuners, crappy electronics badly soldered etc.
Then got convinced I needed to "buy quality" and so sprang for a MIM Player Plus Top Strat. I was SO disappointed, more fret sprout than ANY instrument I've ever handled, the relief was so far off it took almost two full turns (not two 1/8 turn bumps) to get the relief right.
Flipped it and have been looking and trying Strat and Tele "style" instruments from other manufacturers and loving the quality/price I've been finding.

Found a thread on the Minis (First reserached the Jag Mini). Decided to try the Mini Strat and was plesantly surprised how it was out of the box. Here was a guitar 1/5 the price of the MIM, well made and more my size (I'm coming "up" from playing Ukuleles). Court is kicking Fender Mexico's behind from my perspective.

Then I realized there's a MINI BASS, found this thread in my research, and ordered one. Always thought I'd like playing bass but was intimidated by the size and cost.
So happy we live in a great time where "budget" non longer equals "crappy".

If you ask me the Ibanez cheap low budget basses are generally of a better overall quality than the cheap low budget Squier basses, but at about the same price.

The Cort factory in Indonesia where the Mikro Basses are made knows how to make great cheap basses.
View attachment 4415860
Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the Mini P (and other Squiers) are made at the same Cort factory.

Anyone guess at the chances of the mini p comming out latter with a maple fret board.
I'm more hopeful we may see this. The new Mini Jazzmaster has a maple fingerboard and there are at least two new Mini Strats with maple fingerboards too so hopefully they'll contine the trend.

I don't think I saw this touched on in the thread.
Your custom waterslide, was "MINI" part of it or did you leave that from the origional?
Also the text on the back?
If you left it how did you remove the finish without disturbing the existing text?

Boys and Girls, I messaged the Reverb Guy who makes Mini P pick guards for easy shipping in the states…. He said he added some to his inventory.
Good to hear, heard reports he may have stopped. Was hoping he was still doing it as his post is still up on Reverb.

New to the thread (and the forum).
I'm loving what I've been reading about the mini ordered my mini at about page 50.
I'm currently up to 60 and intending to read through but thought I'd pop in and request a club number.
I'd like #42 if it's not taken.
Thanks for the informative thread!

you are now member 42! and btw, i REALLY want a pink bronco, but i just bought a camera and lenses that haven't even arrived yet, and i got a harp in december. still, that shell pink bronco tempts me...

Thanks for the heads-up !

But the ongoing problem for us Canadians is that Fender prohibits their USA and European retailers from shipping product to Canada, allegedly to protect the Fender retailers up here.

IIRC, I actually bought a bass once from CME, but it was [obviously] some other brand - Conklin, actually, a Rocco Prestia limited mass production edition of their customized [for him] GTR4.

And I began to re-read this thread a few weeks ago, but paused, after replying to a few of the early posts.

They are calling out to me as well.

I'm not saying that price is irrelevant, but paying a few more dollars than for their regular ones would not worry me, if we could just GET them into Canada, thru licensed Canadian dealers.

Ya, and I ordered a computer USB audio interface from a domestic seller back during November, which finally made it thru the supply chain, and will be at my P.O. today or tomorrow.

So I feel your pain.

Are they really that cool? I do like the look of them and am curious of the ergonomics. And I've realized I do like guitars in the pastel palett.
I havent really played bass other than a couple times messing aroung with a cheap Ibanez I had many years ago. It was just so big and ungainly yet I yearned to play bass.
I fell out of playing for some time and came back through ukuleles.
Even guitars seem huge now, basses feel downright giant.
I bought a U-Bass but those rubber strings are kind of werid and I haven't messed with that much either. Hoping the Mini P is the right prescription.

I also have a second Mini P on order from Guitar Center. Didn't realize they were out of stock when I made the order so I have one coming from Sweetwater in a couple days.
I was debating on canceling vs holding onto a second one.
I may cancel that and go for the Bronco. If I don't love it I could always sell it forward. That one is probably more likely to increase in value anyway.

I might have to check out whaterver thread the Bronco is in...
DAMN! I feel some GAS coming on again!

At least I can count on my fine friends (cough codependants) here to talk me out of a purchase! ;)

Yep saw that in the thread.
We in the US also experience that when shopping at Thomann, whether for selection or better prices. But they're unable to ship Fender/Squier (and I believe others) to North America.

If you were really motivated I'm sure you could find someone to forward it for you and you would likely save $ even compared to if you could find it domestically.

are broncos really that cool? depends on your preferences. they're an inexpensive bass, easy to mod, very comfortable to play for me with my shoulder issuesl - i find them more comfortable than other 30" scale basses. they sound good to me at low volumes out of the box, they have a classic look, and shell pink is such a classic fender color. they are bigger than the mini p, so if body / neck size is a concern, it's worth noting that. i doubt they'll go up in value.

there's always the ibanez mikros with the same scale as the mini p. i find the neck more comfortable than the mini p, and the body is small, although the mini p may get the nod when it comes to body smallness. comes in a wide variety of colors, too. i just checked, and sweetwater has none in stock, but sometimes a sales engineer can tell you about when they're expected.

if most basses feel too big, there's always the smallguitarsbass - 24.75" scale, the scale of a short scale martin guitar. the sallguitgars MB2 is tiny but uses real strings, which i had to custom order from newtone, and mine is pretty nice, althgough they are pricy. smallguitars.com says they've gone out of business, but they do say they have a few basses left

maybe if you noodled around on a bass for a while, you'd get used to the longer scale. i moved from guitar to bass seamlessly for some reason, but it's definitely a change in ergononmics. for me, moving from every bass in the world to the mini p took some adapting due to the neck.

Talk you OUT of a purchase ? - Hah ! - Surely you jest ! :roflmao:

But having said this, I should point out a few differences in specs between a Squier Mini-P and a Squier Bronco :

The Mini-P has a shorter scale than the Bronco, so regular short scale strings fit the Bronco better, and some folks here care about that, myself included.

Bronco is wider at the nut at 1.6" [Fender still says that it's 1.5 because nobody has corrected them after all of the time that those have been on the market], Mini-P is 1.5", and I prefer wider.

Bronco has a Maple fretboard, which I also prefer.

But the Bronco has a 2 saddle bridge and a single coil pickup, neither of which I can tolerate.

Fortunately, the things which I dislike about the Bronco can be fairly easily changed, much moreso than my quibbles with the Mini-P.

BUT - if you can afford to buy one of each, it might not be such a bad idea, and you can decide for yourself which attributes and instrument(s) suit you better.

And while you are at it, choose a PINK Bronco.

[And THIS, kind readers, in case you missed it, is the point where I do NOT talk him out of a making a purchase.] :D :smug:

IIRC, I discussed that scenario not too far upthread with one or two other TB members, but never followed thru.

I think that it was mainly an episode of procrastination which stopped me, but it might also have been a GAS attack or two from nearby Kijiji ads [much like Craig's List, but in Canada] which could have been a factor in the derailment of my train of thought.

BTW, for example, I found that Sweetwater will not ship Fender nor Ibanez to me in Canada, however Thomann would ship Ibanez but not Fender to me, though shipping in general from Thomann to NA is costly.

FWIW, during the pandemic, I've bought 8 basses, all used and thru private deals, briefly doubling my total to 16, before reselling one of them most recently.

And I have only played [and subsequently gigged] one of the newer 8 since buying it - it was not the one which I resold.

But in fairness to myself [and my back], I sold 7 [mainly heavier] cabs during the same period, and only bought 2 [lighter] others, which more than made room for the extra basses here. :D

That all said, I may well revisit the idea of having someone snag me a pink Bronco.

Hmmmm.... I wonder how much that CME is asking for one of theirs ?

One other thing about the Ibanez Mikro is that standard short scale strings fit it better than they fit the Mini-P, most likely due to differences in headstock and/or bridge design.

And I must pay attention to the MB2, which I think that you have mentioned and linked here in the past.

It's so small that I might get one regardless of the 1.5" nut width, and regardless of where I might need to go for strings which fit it properly.

Why buy one ? - Just so that I from time to time could leverage the old line "I play a little bass." :smug:

BTW, what gauges of strings were on yours from the factory, what gauges did you order from Newtone, and are you pleased with the result ?

Also I noticed that it has the split pickup in reverse P layout.

And exactly what colour is your MB2 ?

I like what I see in the first pic moreso than in the second, but the website may not offer that colour any more anyway.

To digress a bit, I stumbled upon and read a thread not too long ago, where you posted about having gotten a full scale Jazz bass, said that you liked it, and that it did not bother your shoulder.

Do you still feel that way about it ?

BTW, another bass which has a pleasant mix of most of the Bronco and Mini-P attributes is the Jay Turser JTB-40.

30" scale, P-style split pickup, 4-saddle bridge, wider at the nut, body like a P, and weight about 5 pounds 8 ounces.

And it can be had in transparent red, which is prob'ly my 2nd favourite colour.

One of those became my gigging bass for most of 2021, for a rehearsal/gear check, and 4 out of 5 gigs, those 4 happening during August and September.

i play extra lights on my MB2, but you can order literally any strring gauges and lengths from newtone. the site only has a few basses left. i guess daphne blue was the most popular color.

i'm going through a bad shoulder period, so right now i can't play the jazz but i was loving it till that. it's really nice. luckily i have a herd of smaller basses.

when i look up the turser weight, i'm seeing results over 7 pounds. but if someone wants one, there's a used black one at GC used right now.

The price is certianly right on the Mikros. $180 new and plenty used for various prices on a casual search.
If I'm not mistaken those are "PJ" style? Seems like they have potentially more vesatility. Though I'm barely a player so I honestly wouldn't know the difference at this point.

I first looked for used Broncos but they look to be near parity with new so not much savings there.

Thanks for all the input.
I have been given much food for thought.

as far as i know, all recent 4-string mikros are P/J (although my husband routed one of mine, made a pickguard to cover the original pickup holes, and now it's got fender J/J pickups), but my 5-string mikro had J/J pickups.

I agree that if they still had that shade of blue, I would choose it over the other two colours which you linked.

Yes, pain is not something which most of us enjoy, and I hope that yours fades soon.

With me, it's the lower back, which forced me to sit to play, and if I do that, the weight of the bass is not as important as I sometimes make it out to be.

My most recent acquisition is a MIM Jazz, which had a 32" custom conversion neck from Brad Lowe installed by its last owner, and weighs exactly 8 pounds, which is light for a Jazz.

That neck also has a P-width nut of 1.66" [I measured it with a digital vernier], so it more or less fulfills one of my 'bucket list' wishes, from back before anyone even called it a bucket list, of having and gigging a Jazz with a P neck.

And it has black nylon covered [possibly D'Addario, medium blue silks] strings on it, which are a string type which I have not tried in close to 50 years, so that alone may prove interesting when the gigs resume yet again.

I have tried short scale basses during the past few years, after long scale [my Ric] for a much longer period, and now I will be checking out medium.

It might turn out that medium is the 'Goldilocks length' for me, and I'll report on this in due course.

Regarding my Jay Turser JTB-40, I weighed the transparent red one to be 5 LB 8 [on a digital parcel scale], but not the other, which is a sort of a turquoise sparkle finish, however it felt similar, the last time that I lifted it.

Could it be that you were finding numbers for their full scale P-ish version ?

The other reason that I ask is that I cannot find that used black one on GC [sold already ?], nor any other Turser products, and when I first got my red JTB-40, I also looked up new stock to compare, and it seemed that stores only carried the short scale model in the two colours which I eventually snagged, both used.

Hmmmm....

Glad to contribute ! :)

While most are PJ, I think that Ibanez also have/had a model of Mikro with a single humbucker pickup like a Music Man bass, seen on Sweetwater, and IIRC, I was unaware of the 5-string model which pcake mentioned.

I too have noticed that used Squier Broncos [and Squier Mini-P basses] each seem to be holding their value well when offered used in Canada, on Kijiji at least.

Also bear in mind that almost all stock J pickups [and the Bronco pickup] are of single coil design, and therefore prone to picking up hum, if any is present in the room.

EDIT :

The bass which I took to be a Music Man-ish Mikro is actually a full scale bass.

Same price as a Mikro, and it looks nice, if they ever restock it :

Ibanez Gio GSR100EX Bass Guitar - Mahogany Oil

And I do see the 5-string Mikro listed on Sweetwater.

an unexpected surprise - ibanez GSR100EX

Very interesting !
