I was thinking of putting thick flats on my Mini to lessen the floppiness. D'Addario 50-105 but they are long scale ECB82 Chromes | Bass Guitar Strings | D'Addario

I guess all the strings will wrap around the posts. You're saying there should be no problem then?

I also found out that Joe Dart has LaBella mediums on his (Jack's) Precision Jr. I know that one has a string-through-body bridge and LaBella advises against that so it seems strings are more resilient than we thought.

i emailed stringjoy, and they didn't have a short enough E string to fit without the fat wrap on the peg. they didn't offer me custom length options.

IIRC, one company has so far been found, Pyramid, which will make a custom/bespoke wrap length order of any string type and gauge which they already produce, including their flats, mentioned somewhere upthread.

Another company, Newtone, does custom orders only in rounds, but in any scale length and almost any gauge.

BTW, LaBella does make a few sets specifically tapered for thru-body basses.

I checked the LaBella website and all the thru-body strings are long scale. I also checked a few Vulfpeck videos with the Precision Junior and I can see the red silk of the LaBellas on the post but not on the headstock, so the strings must've been cut shorter. I think I'll bite the bullet and see what happens with the 50-105 Chromes.

Anyone consider drilling out the bridge and body to make a string thru Mini? I have. It might solve the length problem and I'm at the point in this build where I still could do it.

the price included delivery from Germany to sunny England UK.

I think the price may have gone up 5% at the start of Oct.

I’ve not put them on yet, I’m mulling a second Mini.

If your using chrome browser it normally gives the option to translate a website. But I agree they do need an English option.

Cheers man, I appreciate it. I have 45-100 Chromes on my 34" J bass knockoff and love the stiffness.
I supposed there will be no issue then if I put long-scale heavier gauge strings on the Mini, with the proper nut slot adjustments of course.

I'd have no real issue myself doing that myself and have done it on 30" scales, but ideally if available I prefer the short scale strings. However to some TBers, not having the silk on the post is a potential crime against humanity

I have had no issue tone wise with having the full string on the post. For me, it's just an issue of if it will crack or not. If the string is flexible and not too thick, it will not crack, and all will be well. If it is too stiff or too fat, it will not have a happy ending. In my own experience, just about all flats will crack. [The E string]
YMMV.

With the two basses, I can experiment without risk. Both my basses sound great. The newer one has nice feeling, good looking strings. The original has strings that look and feel like they have had it. Tomorrow, I will experiment with putting a set of EB Nickel Slinky 45-100s on it.

I assume Dart's single knob is volume.

Fact is - the typical tone knob isn't very versatile. When fine EQ precision is needed, it ain't coming from a tone knob.

The tone knob is great. I use it all the time to make my J-bass sound like a P. On a P it's also great for cutting out a bit of top edge. EQ is more complex than that.
