i was just sitting here playing on my mini P quietly and realizing that now they're broken in, i really like these d'addario nickel rounds on it even though the low string has wrap on the peg. funny thing is i prefer fender nickel rounds on the mikros, but these just feel and sound right on the mini P.

I was thinking of putting thick flats on my Mini to lessen the floppiness. D'Addario 50-105 but they are long scale ECB82 Chromes | Bass Guitar Strings | D'Addario

I guess all the strings will wrap around the posts. You're saying there should be no problem then?

I also found out that Joe Dart has LaBella mediums on his (Jack's) Precision Jr. I know that one has a string-through-body bridge and LaBella advises against that so it seems strings are more resilient than we thought.

Update on my Mini.

The neck is getting smoother and shinier just from playing. The nut slots are definitely too high and will need to be lowered. I'm thinking of buying nut slots. Buy once cry once. I don't trust local techs much.

The neck dive is definitely bothering me. Apparently Gotoh Res-O-Lite tuners are a drop in. I'd also like to add an ashtray cover to the bridge: it looks classy, it adds a bit of weight and I can put foam under it. Still looking for the right flats, see my previous post.

Coincidentally, I just got back from having the Chromes installed on my Mini P about an hour ago. The owner at my local store is not only a skilled luthier and tech, but also a very accomplished and well-respected musician. He did not like the idea of a spacer on the bridge at all, so he installed the Chromes as is. There is about 1/2" of the thicker part of the E string on the tuning post, which he did not believe would create any issues whatsoever.
The tension with the Chrome flats is incomparable to the stock strings. Much stiffer, no buzz and they sound great. The strings feel exactly like they do on all my 30" scale basses.
I have in the past cut down 34" scale Chromes and installed them on a 30" scale with no issues. In 8 years of playing Chromes - some cut down - I have never broken a string. And once installed I've never changed them.

If anyone goes ahead with painting the pickguard, please post and share your results.

I have read mixed things about painting. Some say it can look great, others say it will scratch easily.

I am actually contemplating "painting" it with - that rubber spray.

Any handy people with info on how to succeed with this, please share. I am having difficulty looking at these white pickguards any longer. :)

Cheers man, I appreciate it. I have 45-100 Chromes on my 34" J bass knockoff and love the stiffness.
I supposed there will be no issue then if I put long-scale heavier gauge strings on the Mini, with the proper nut slot adjustments of course.

I set an ashtray over the bridge to see what it looked like. It looked a little weird with the small body but I don’t think it looked that bad.

Also, I ordered some black adhesive vinyl to try to put on the pickguard. Couldn’t find any patterns that I liked so I just went with solid gloss black. I’ll post a pic after I get it on the pickguard.

Most of us here are saying AT YOUR OWN RISK !

IIRC, one company has so far been found, Pyramid, which will make a custom/bespoke wrap length order of any string type and gauge which they already produce, including their flats, mentioned somewhere upthread.

Another company, Newtone, does custom orders only in rounds, but in any scale length and almost any gauge.

BTW, LaBella does make a few sets specifically tapered for thru-body basses.
