Also contemplating an out of the box approach with a black string tree as a small single screw thumb rest.

No thumb rest, so for many years I have rested my thumb on the E string.
It's become part of my muting, and I occasionally pluck that string with it, especially if making a chord with the E and G strings, or disco octave stuff, where the thumb could pluck the E or the A.

I put them on all my basses. But it's not an either/or situation - if I want to use it, I do but for some playing techniques I don't. It's there if needed and ignored when not.
I watched Jaco play and his technique is to use the lowest string as a thumb rest so he moved his whole hand up and down when he needed to go lower or higher. It obviously worked well for him, but it's just one of a number of approaches to playing. Many of the Motown players put a rest under the strings and used their thumb so anything goes.
I use a thumbrest pretty much only when I'm playing on the E string. On the other strings, the E string is my thumbrest.
Maybe someone should 3d print some micro-sized parts.

Yeah, it's been kinda quiet here during the last few days.
