Re-download the manual. It's been updated. On Page 7 the Name Parameter:

Allows editing the 16 character name of the current patch. Use the VALUE encoder to change the selected character. Use the TYPE encoder to select a character. Exit by pressing
the VALUE encoder, then press and hold the TYPE encoder to SAVE the name permanently.

note: For the patch name to be displayed the NAMES global must be set to ON or SCROLL.

also, i don't think the update loaded properly the first time (i just did it again with a different midi out device). i'm pretty sure there wasna a Names in the Global. all good now though. thanks!

There is NAMES in the Global. It just turns them on or off. Off is BANK 01...On is MELT AWAY. Or you can choose SCROLL.

Taking these statements into account, maybe the Timeline isn't actually that expensive since it performs the tasks of two pedals (more than) fairly well.

You know, the more I read about and hear from this pedal, the more I'm convinced of that statement. I know it's overkill for me to some extent, but it's just that I'm fascinated by the set of features and the quality that seems to ooze from this unit. Although I'm not thinking of buying it right now, I have a curious question: Is it always out of stock? I mean, is there always a waiting time for purchasing it, or is that situation temporary?

Its the largest and most complicated effect on my board... and I intent on adding a DAA DMC-3XL to broaden its usage... I love this thing, and I barely understand how to use it.

I think I finally do understand the concept of bank usage and parameter saving; as apposed to knob twiddling every time I switch delay effects... I'm... learning...

MIne arrived today. I didn't get much time with it but it's presets sound very very nice. I look forward to twiddling with it this weekend and seeing what I can do with it and the Pitch Factor.
