The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

NPD.

New version of More just arrived. I thoroughly enjoyed the using a Westinghouse into my Mesa class d amp, but curiosity had gotten the best of me of adding one more tube in the signal.

Does anyone use only the Finally as their DI with no other tone shaping pedals? How is the EQ curve on the Finally? I am thinking about building a small board with the Finally being the only tone-shaping pedal at the very end.
I do with my small board. Its for one of my band's that is IEM only.
I use active basses here, so I have enough eq capability.

Finally has no "eq", just gain/volume and an on or off, fixed HPF which IIRC is similar in slope & position to that on the Noble.

I believe the UA has more gain on tap, whilst Elementary was designed to be a clean channel of the Dr Watson. It does get a bit hairy though.

I have a Space Heater which is the same as the UA and the Finally, simple gain and level controls and only and none of the bells and whistles of it's bigger brothers. I use this to set my underlying tone and have other means for getting dirty

But before my current set up I used it Infront of an Ampeg PF50T as a drive pedal and it's phenomenal!

Whilst I've heard only good things about Elementary, UA seems to be the go to pedal.

I'd love to hear how that combo sounds. I've always liked the look of the LA1A but it's out of my price range atm.

Even though there are 5 pedals on my main board, there is no other always on tone shaping. Have tuner>comp>HX One>VMT>Finally. Use with active basses as others have noted. If I used a passive bass and was going only to the amp, that would be fine too. Probably be fine to FOH as well, but I would probably add a preamp if that was the case.

Wondering if anyone has done a video of the Neptunium yet?
I haven't seen any, but I hope someone does soon because I get asked about it almost every day.

Question for Señor Sushi:

I am a huge fan of Detective and Elementary. I’ve even got an old Wattson. I know that they are based on the old Hi-Watt DR 103 circuit, but to my years the EQ is configured a bit differently. So, what’s the official Señor Sushi word as to which EQ settings on Detective and Elementary will produce as flat as signal as possible, understanding that a mid scoop is inherent in the design.

Thanks!
@lomo covered this pretty well already, running the controls at 4-5-0 is about as close as you'll get, but you'll never completely get around the mid scoop. Interestingly the EQ on Elementary and Dr. Wattson is exactly the same, but the last stage of Elementary comes after the EQ, so it does a little more shaping afterward that makes it sound and feel a little different.

On a semi-related note I finally got the revised boards in for Detective and have been doing some testing, and man that red channel is a winner. Both channels are great and I love the flexibility of having both, but when that red channel kicked in it gave me some feelings.

I'm still waiting on the new batch of enclosures, but I hope to have Detective available for ordering in the next week or two. Dreamcatcher needed a couple more tweaks, but what is hopefully the final revision of the board will be here for testing in about a week.

I'm interested in using either the UA or the Elementary as a tube overdrive pedal, not as always on preamp. I plan on putting it directly after my Effectrode LA-1A that has a boost that could kick the overdrive up from low gain OD into medium gain territory. What is the better choice?
As noted above either one will work and it's going to come down to preference. My personal taste is that I like the way Elementary drives a little better than Underground Accelerator. Elementary has a hotter first stage so it feels a little more aggressive and bitey, whereas Underground Accelerator is a little more smooth. That being said it can also depend on what I'm playing. When I play my passive jazz bass I like the way it feels with the Underground Accelerator, but when I play my active Ibanez SR I think the bite of the Elementary lends itself better to a nice modern grind.

So short answer, you should probably get both just to be safe.

Thanks for the replies!

I only own a passive bass and usually only adjust EQ for the room. Perhaps only the Finally may be a little too bare bones.
If you only own passive, I'd suggest get a Neptunium while you still can, its going to be discontinued.

I have both actives and passives. My main gigging basses 99% of the time are the actives.

Sorry if I missed the post, but is there a tonal difference between the Neptunium and the Nobelium XLR outputs?
There shouldn't be, they're the exact same circuit.
@Sushi Box FX did I miss the pedal chunking video?
Nope, I keep finding other things to work on and haven't gotten around to editing the videos. I promise I'll get to it soon-ish.

That's my setup too! Arrived at it through sheer luck and Geddy attachment. The YYZ solid-state driving the UA tube gives me lots of EQ options and something sweet that's better than the sum of the parts (IMHO). And that's with a mostly clean tone, not even aggressive.

Agreed, and I like the aggressive tones on the YYZ too. I think with the drive at 3 oclock I get some nice fat fuzz bass (I do not use the tight button), and at about 1;30 oclock, enough dirt for my 70s Dusty Hill tone. I think the YYZ is easy to adjust on the fly too, although, when I want to go clean I am using the SV-Pre for the job at the moment. And going through the UA adds a lot.

I've had the Finally v2 (WBIM edition) for a few months but just now put it on an actual pedalboard. I ended up swapping in a 12AX7 tube since a little grit seemed appropriate for the power trio/dad band I'm currently in.

I'm still dialing in my setup, but the Finally and Empress Bass Comp are always on. The Zoom B1 Four in stomp mode is used for occasional individual effects (mostly chorus and overdrive so far).

I've actually been experimenting with a setup for doubling somewhat similar: Saturnworks A/B mixer -> Sushi MORE -> Zoom MS-60B+ -> Finally WBIM. Hopefully will be able to workshop it a bit in the wild, but I like analogue effects much more than digital ones. The good thing about the MS-60B+ is that it has plenty of EQ/HPF/etc options for upright.

Also, since I haven't posted a pedalboard pic in awhile, here's one from a wedding gig from this weekend:

I think I prefer the Nobelium to the Neptunium, but the Neptunium is a lot of value packed into such a small area that it kind of can't be overstated how useful it is. Hint hint, Nathan!!!!
