The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

Has the possibility of a Sushi take on the SWR Grand Prix preamp ever come up? A friend of mine just got hold of one and I had a try of it last night and it's really great sounding.
I don't know if it's sonically similar to anything already in the lineup (I didn't have my pedalboard with me to try and compare) but it was pretty awesome.
I've never played the Grand Prix, but I had an Interstellar Overdrive in a rack rig for a bit. That one sounded great. Might be another one to add to the "what-would-Sushi-do-with-this" list.
 
Good morning everyone. I have just got my SushiBox Finally V2 in the mail last night and was curious how everyone is Powering their units. I was planning on using a Voodoo Labs Current doubling cable with either my PP3 or my X4 to be sure to have atleast 800mA avaliable
 
I dunno but I don’t think the sushi master is particularly enthusiastic about replicating hybrid, solid state designs. He clearly has the Jones for tubes, toobz and toooooobzzz.
That's the beauty of the SWR Grand Prix, it was their rackmount tube preamp, if it could fit into a smaller enclosure and still sound equally as good (and not be next to impossible to find) then happy days.
Or maybe the Aguilar DB 659.... ok, off down a rabbit hole

I believe, for a lightning-fast warmup period (within seconds) you'll want at least 500mA. Once the tube is warmed, it tends to draw give or take 300mA. You definitely do not need to exceed 500mA for safe operation of a single-tube Sushi pedal; I've been running my London Underground (and previously an Underground Accelerator) off a 500mA tap on my CS6, and it fully powers up almost instantly. Been problem free for nearly two years now!

The SWR GP is basically a solid state design with one tube in it, 90% at least is solid state, Sushi seems to like pedals with at least 90% Tubes and maybe a little bit of solid state.
But if it is a great product you never know....

I can't speak for sonic similarities as I've never heard one in person, but tube preamp using op-amps to drive an active EQ is a pretty reasonable description of Venus Z. I found a schematic and it's obviously not exactly the same as Venus, but the general principle is similar. From a design perspective I prefer how I did the tube stages in Venus Z, but as a player I know every SWR product I've tried has been excellent. So it's certainly not something I'm itching to do, but I can't point to anything particularly wrong with it (though I would obviously go for a transformer-coupled D.I. instead of an active op-amp drive D.I.).
 
I'm going through Di, XLR out to the board. I can't remember the name of the DI atm. Our sound engineer was trouble shooting the noise issue and turned off the lights. No issue. It's definitely the lights. He explained something about the wiring in the building for the sound and lights should ideally be on different circuits but they aren't and it's not a cheap fix. I've seen comments that the JDI solved similar issues. Hopefully it will work. I'll know in a couple weeks(waiting for it to arrive and my schedule to play.) If it does work then I'll be curious if the Finally! Can have the same result.
if the current DI you are using has a Ground Lift this should fix your issue. The JDI is a solid Passive direct Box but there is nothing special about it in particular that would solve this issue. The ground lift or (Ground Loop Isolator) switch on the JDI is what you would need to be using here to hopefully solve this is available on most DI boxes

My 6-year-old informed me that this picture is pretty enough to share.

Tube-driven VCA compressor with clean blend for parallel compression. I've been told people like that. I tried to keep it as small as possible, and this is (as you can probably tell) the same size as Underground Accelerator et al. I'm still waiting on the final nod to release it, but I'm personally very happy with how it sounds and feels.

I guess it’s pretty difficult to find some space. Maybe a jack on the side to plug a led monitoring panel ? In the end we don’t need monitoring all the time…

Don’t take that too seriously, it’s just that I’m pretty bad to control a compressor without monitoring. But that’s just me.
 
Speaking about compression : I know that a tube preamp compress the signal a bit. I have the feeling that the Grand Slampegg adds a bit more compression than the other preamps I have. I find it very lovely, and it’s perfect for my use case (a bass, a GS, an amp), and I don’t feel the need to add a compressor in that situation. Two pedals in one !

The more I use the Grand Slampegg the more I love it. Thanks @Sushi Box FX !

The only issue I have is that the preamp makes some weird noises after some time. Noises that goes away when I unplug the bass and replug it. I guess it catches some EM noises and the cable acts as an antenna, or something else.

I definitely strongly prefer compressors with good metering. I like to see the gain reduction that’s occurring as I adjust the settings (particularly the threshold and ratio) and especially when using parallel compression. I think sometimes people just plug into compressors without a good sense of what they are actually doing to their signal and end up effectively using them as gain stages or tone shaping boxes (and subsequently judging those compressors based on how well they do in those areas).

I did learn how to tweak a compressor with the Empress Bass Compressor. Both because it’s transparent (so I train my ear to ear compression and not the preamp) and because of the excellent builtin metering (so I know what to ear). It definitely helps to know what’s going on.

I love the graphics on that! Looks like it has all the features I go for in a compressor.
Is the comp dial ratio, or is it a combination of things?
Looks like I'll be ordering one of these as well then.
And on the metering point, it's not something I'm all that bothered about in a pedal compressor, I usually dial it in to something I like the sound of then leave it there.
