The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

When Nathan gets back I'm for sure getting at least the More pedal and possibly the Finally V3 but I'm still up in the air about the Finally pedal as I already have the UA and I'm using the Neptunium as my DI. I thought I had read in a previous post awhile back that the UA and the Finally share the same preamp minus the EQ. Not sure if that is correct or not though. I will get a Finally at some point anyway as I have multiple pedalboards but if that is the case wouldn't just turning the eq off on the UA give me the same or close to same result? My understanding is the tubes and the amount of overdrive are the biggest differences.

My apologies if that's a redundant question but I reviewed the past posts and probably overlooked it. I'm just looking for some clarity on the differences. Thanks

If you're just using the 1/4" output, the only differences between UA with the EQ turned off and Finally v3 are the tube type (12AU7 vs 12AX7), the option of having an HPF, and an extra output buffer on Finally that is not present on UA. If you don't need a DI, an HPF, or an output buffer, then UA will save you some money over a Finally v3.

Finally v1 was essentially the same as UA with eq off. Finally v2 has a fixed 80(90?)hz hpf u can turn off or on. Finally v3 has a variable hpf that u can turn off and on.

Thanks Nathan. I thought I had read that somewhere in the thread. I'll probably get one later for another board but I want to get some other pedals with different sounds since I have the Neptunium covering the DI and HPF. The More is definitely gonna be ordered when you return. Still undecided on what else at this point but I'm leaning towards the Elementary.

Yup, forgot to chime in on that one, Jason at @Pedalnetics is a friend and he makes killer stuff, I absolutely recommend the DIMstick, which uses the same Unagi E4305 transformer that I use in my stuff.

I'm pretty sure the transformer is Nathan own design, no idea where it's made though, very little non Sushi FX related comes up when you google it.

Jason makes his stuff in house, and very good it is too! I couldn't get by without my pedalnetics gear.

Yup, I forget which country they're wound in, but they are unique to SushiBox/his specs. I don't have my report handy on my phone, but frequency analysis on one of my DImSticks is flat from 20hz to 20khz. You get exactly what you put into it 🙂

(And if you want flavor, that's where one of the awesome pedals like Finally or Neptunium or Grand Slampegg come in)

Ok guys I'm having paralysis by analysis lol. I'm putting a small board together which will looks like this currently.

Effectrode PC-2A >Trickfish OD>Tone Hammer.

I want to add some tubeyness to it. The Finally V3 looks great but I guess I don't technically need the DI since the TH has that covered. Should I go Underground Accelerator for the extra EQ flexibility, or a More? Or maybe still go Finally when orders open again lol.

UA first in chain + More before or after the THDI depending on whether or not you're using the DI. 🤘

I LOVE my Neptunium. Tube, DI, and EQ. No overdrive or distortion, just pure tube! I also have a Tone Hammer than runs into my Neptunium. Perfect combo in my opinion.

If I had to pick one, I would say go with the UA. Least expensive of the three, and with the defeatable EQ, could be just the tubeyness you're after with it off, and give you a great sounding preamp option with it on. I will confess, I run a More into a UA (plus a whole bunch of other weird options that well exceed overkill; it's complicated) with a Nobellium at the very end for DI duties, but, on its own, the UA sounds very very good to me, EQ on or off.

The irony is I've had this same combo once before and I did love it. Maybe I should just snag a Neptunium again.

As cool as Japanese made Unagi transformers would be, they are designed in Illinois and made in China. Ironically some of the people from the Chinese factory are visiting Chicago later this month and wanted to visit me, but I'm going to be in Mongolia the whole time they're in Chicago.

Also the chances of finding non-Sushi Box information regarding Unagi Transformers is slim as Unagi is a brand name I made up. The company that makes the transformers is just an OEM for other brands that slap a label on them, and Unagi is no different. The unbranded transformers show up at my place where they are inspected by me, after which the Unagi label is applied by one of my sticker experts (aged 6 and 8).

Stacked steel plates and a couple separate windings of resin coated copper wire... While in College (1980-'85), I worked two Summers at the P.D. George Co. in St. Louis, where they formulated such insulating wire resins for a Company that will remain nameless, but everyone would recognize.... :)

Fun stuff!
