I like it for just adding a little bit of character or using it as a dirty boost. I don't really try to get that Ampeg B15 overdrive tone but it nails it if that's what you want. I don't use a lot of gain with it. Pairs great with my SushiBox Particle Accelerator!

How would you characterize is gain/dirty tone?
Straight up ampeg, or can it do it's own thing?

Others can probably give better answers, but I'd say more on the Old School warmth and hair side. Definitely sounds different than a Broughton SV-PRE which is an SVT emulater and more like a Broughton Fliptop which is a B15 emulator. Then I put it through the Particle Accelerator for the thick fatness.

When I happened upon SushiBox, I had zero interest or need in expanding my preamp, compressor, or digital multi effects stable, but the brand speaks to me. When the Westinghouse was born, I envisioned a very specific role in my signal chain. I was right. It slid right into an interstice and fits perfectly.
The Black Eye X did not strike me as a preamp, but more of a heavy distortion pedal, I was right.
Once you hold a SB in your hand, and plug it in, when you see a London Underground or a Slampegg, slowly floating by on the river of opportunity, my previous stance of not wanting anymore preamps fades away. And here I am.

Yeah man, I am with you there. I bought my "last" preamp about 6 preamps ago, and I've got my eye on at least one SB when orders open back up. A Dr. Watson for sure, unless of course things change. Also, I've started messing around with compression more and a Deep Dish ...

& I have to say, were it not for a rather unusual boost in calls to play (distinctly profitable) gigs starting last December or so, I fear the panopticon may have permanently hermitized me. It's been really tough on some of my fellow introvert friends who aren't musicians etc! If she's of the introvert type, it'll take some coaxing and maybe a lot of time... and of course we don't get more hyper with age, so there's that.

On the other hand, I've dated women who love going out and it has nearly ruined me financially, sooooo homebody-ism has its pluses as well haha

Yeah my wife loved that I was a musician while we were dating, and the first band I was in after we got married she came to every show, then the next band she missed a few shows, the band after that only went to a couple shows, etc. Now she's more or less impartial to music in general, and requires a considerable amount of persuasion to check out live music. Hopefully in a few years when my kids are older they'll be into it, and I can take them to shows and my wife can stay home :P

Yup, that's the one. Excellent and thorough review, and unique because I was convinced to put a mini tube and X series Slampegg in the same box, so the review features both.

Thanks man, I appreciate it. Call me vain, but I never get tired of people saying nice things about me :P Black Eye is still my favorite pedal ever, but definitely a lot more flexible on guitar, and also moreso in front of an amp. My new favorite recorded tone is my guitar into Black Eye X, then into my amp (Matchless Lightning), plugged into a reactive load with my CAB M on the output for speaker sim. Kicks the crap out of any of the Positive Grid plugins I used to use.

This sounds very familiar. When we first met, my girlfriend used to love helping to carrying guitar cases and merch boxes into the venue with me. Now my guitar/amp/pedal collection pile is a burden and I'm lucky if I dont get a dirty look for wanting to spend an hour silently practicing with headphones in my office (I may be exaggerating a little...). Luckily we still both love going out to (other band's) concerts though.
