The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

So this is still nothing more than a funny idea that tickles my brain every now and then, but I've thought about doing like a pair of EL84 in a box for an 18W power amp. Just a 12AX7 phase inverter into the pair for 18W or so. A single tube would be easier since I could run class A and I wouldn't need a phase inverter, but with a 12AX7 and a pair of power tubes I can run a 12VDC input and use the same high-voltage setup as in my preamp pedals and I wouldn't need a power transformer.

Again still just a thought bouncing around in there, but something that's on my mind occasionally.
You better start opening more slots with all of these ideas and prototypes flying around! :laugh:

Cool, I have a Ashdown little bastard that's similar to that, everything on its tube buffered, really fun. Well if you ever make a power section I'll be first to jump on board, smaller the better, just not under 5 watts - I use a PS2 power station, get 100% out of anything under 250

Well I mean a lot of them don't end up turning into real pedals, they just sit around my basement, I was thinking about getting a shelf to display them on :p Should I start selling off weird prototypes to fund more prototypes?

A beautiful sight! I'm interested to hear your take on the differences between the PA, LHC and PAX. You're not planning to move forward with the LHC, right?

I'll try to get some demos recorded sometime this week so everyone (myself included :p) can hear the differences next to each other. I probably won't be moving forward with the LHC. It has a really great sound, and the cost of the tubes is pretty similar to 6N21B (although I need twice as many for the same circuit), and 60mA for an all-tube preamp is absurdly low, but the low output has me worried, as does the fact that 5672 are notoriously likely to go microphonic. 6N21B do as well (that's why Optipus was grounded for a bit, microphonic tube), but not as much as 5672. Also it's silly, but I miss the tube glow. The engineers that designed the 5672 figured out exactly the amount of heat needed to make the tube work, and that amount of heat doesn't produce a visible tube glow. The sound is still there, but from a marketing standpoint I feel like pushing a tube pedal whose tubes don't glow would be difficult.

It's great, I have a NOS Amperex in it right now (because I'm spoiled) and it sounds amazing. I need to change the way the tube mounts as it's not very stable, but I'm hoping to have 12AX7 versions of the single-tube pedals as soon as January.

You can always ship the tube out of the socket, but then you leave it up to a musician to plug something in.. but couriers have a special kind of way right now with packages.. this was packed properly and still went sideways, just from shear force

it shouldn't be a problem with something as small as a pedal.

I'm not so much worried about shipping as I am about general every day use. My idea was to mount the tube to a small board with a connector on it that attaches to the main board. this would let me mount the tube super close to the top of the enclosure and still let you swap tubes because you can just unplug the small board from the main assembly, swap the tube, and put the board back in. I have both connectors epoxied to their respective boards, so they don't wobble at all by themselves anymore, but there is still a little bit of play in the connection, so shaking the pedal vigorously (not something most people would do, but still something you should be allowed to do) will make the connection rock back and forth. I don't think it would actually come loose and fall out, but it moves enough to make me nervous, so I don't want to deal with it. I've epoxied the connectors together on the prototype and mounted the board a little further down, so you should still be able to get the tube out, but it won't be as convenient. I'm going to swap for a soldered-in header connection between the two boards so they will be permanently attached and order another batch of boards sometime soon.

A thought occurred to me while at work the other day.

A lot of people talk about getting a pedal that sounds like a tube amp pushed just to the point of breakup.
The answer usually includes a CMOS/MOSFET/FET based pedal.

You make pedals with actual tubes.

Have you thought about a sort of, um, "hybrid" pedal?

Maybe something that has two channels. One driven by the tube(s), and the other a MOSFET based channel. And, the ability to blend them.

A collaboration with someone like Damnation Audio @father of fires would be killer.

I obviously do the Lab Rat, which is a LM308 op-amp into a 6N21B output stage, and I also have a pretty good sounding prototype of the Glass Clover, which is a JRC4558 op-amp with a tube input stage and tube output stage. These are both essentially an op-amp pushing a tube, they're not operating separately.

But as for doing a pedal with a tube preamp and a solid-state device emulating a tube preamp, nope I've never considered it. Generally the big reason people use solid-state devices is for simplicity and power. Taking a 9V (or whatever) input and turning it into 6.3V for heaters and 200V for plates is not a trivial thing. So if I already have all that in my pedal for the tube section, I don't see why I need to also have a solid-state device emulating a tube stage. I've heard a lot of great-sounding FET-based tube emulation circuits, but I've never heard one that I like better than an all-tube version of the same circuit.

Another thought along the same lines.

A lot of people love the SVT for it's tube based breakup.
And, a lot of people love the old Gallien-Krueger 700RB-II/1001RB-II.

How about a hybrid of solid-state and tube-driven breakup?
