I've looked into Neve stuff before but never really attempted a build, that would be interesting. Whether or not a tube would be a beneficial addition to the Neve circuit would be an interesting study for sure.
I'm pretty stoked to be working on it as well, I think it's going to be a really neat, really versatile preamp that a lot of people are going to like. I'm finishing up some home improvement projects that I'd been putting off for 5 months or so, but hopefully next week I'll get a chance to play more with the initial prototype and let you take a listen.
In theory sure, you just need a boost converter. I'm already boosting 9V up to 235V in all of my tube preamps, and in Smoke Signal I'm actually running two boost converters in one pedal, one steps up to 235V for the tube supply, the other steps up to 25V for the solid-state section (speaker emulator). Phantom power is pretty low current, it should be pretty easy to design a converter to step 9V up to 48V for phantom, and phantom is obviously an important requirement in a mic pre.

Hey to all the Sushi Box alumni - quick question.
I'm eyeing off a 2nd hand London Underground. The graphic on the pedal states "12v" for power requirement, but will these work on 9volt (ie from an MXR DC Brick that only has 9v and 18v outlets). All the current models seem to state 9-12v is why I ask.

Yup, 9V is fine. It may have been one of the very first "X-Series" builds that I did before I discovered that 9V runs the same as 12V. Technically the tube manufacturer wants you to use 12.6V, but it runs just fine at 9V and there are in fact no added benefits to running it at 12V.
I have several models. Never had a performance issue between 9V and 12V even on the units with 2 tubes. I can’t tell a difference. I send 12V from my board but when I’m moving things around or using a preamp to achieve “inside voice” for guitar I just use a 9V wall wart. No issues.

The only issue I've had with 9V is my Voodoo Labs Iso 5.
The first 3 spots are rated at 100ma.
Didn't realize this when I plugged in the UA, and got no sound. Thought I broke something.
It pays to read the manual.....

only a suggest and the reason for it was cuz I use my space heater on all my recordings now and that means also in front of a gap pre-73 + eq-81 (using insert) on a record channel and f u c k i n crimony!

Well this is cool, love your basses man
Well, a pre amp I've been on the fence about for quite some time now just got replaced by the Smoke Signal. The tone, the warmth, the thick and juicy flavor all sound better to my ear and more of what I want to sound like. Not putting the other one down at all. It's a phenomenal piece of gear and ultra versatile but I personally don't use the distortion circuit in it and my Harmonic Booster is the same clean pre.
Back to the SS... HOLY SMOKES BATMAN! This is the clean and dirty tube tone I've had in head for years. I'll try to record some noodling later tonight. It''ll be a cell phone recording since I don't have time or desire to set up the mic and di and laptop. I've had some quick recordings come out well using my vlog setup. this weekend I'll set up for di and mic.
Some questions to @Sushi Box FX about the Fluffy Kitten that may be of interest to others:
1. Frequency points of the EQ?
2. Any online resource you'd recommend to understand better the process of biasing FETs? I've noted the factory settings and know how to use my multimeter but am not sure if I may damage the transistors in the process... I'm in particular interested in exploring the range of the FK, from milder distortion (FETs closer to linear operation?) to sputtery intermittent nonsense.

other thing regarding space heater: maybe to keep it from the redundancy scissors is your idea about point to point discrete component version to make it both singular and organic, I think in some ways this baby is your signature, much respect.
