So finally had a chance to play through the Smoke Signal today. It's an all around great preamp, and a great dirt pedal. I dialed blue channel to just a hint of OD - very touch sensitive OD, great tone, sounds fantastic.

The red channel - much more gain. So much bass booty - one of those pedals that doesn't kill the low end when heavy distortion kicks in . Just fantastic distorted sound, especially out the filtered output. I could listen to that all day.

I'm thinking about doing some tube rolling, maybe trying ultra hg tubes or a 12aux7 in one or both channels to see what that does with the breakup points. I have to say that I've been on a dirt kick lately, and this one may end up replacing a few.

I too received my Smoke Signal yesterday, a day early based on USPS tracking, but I didn’t want to post a pic until my new knobs arrived. (Simple things please simple minds).

My initial impression has me thinking I won’t be using it as an always on preamp, as I’m quite fond of the distortion characteristic, even on the blue channel. Gain up past 3 o’clock on the blue channel is a really pleasing, harmonically rich overdriven sound. The red channel sounds bombastic with any gain setting. Overall a pretty spiffy device.

BTW, if you ever receive something you believe to be defective or broken, don’t go straight to your online community and start whining, go privately to the source, and you just might discover that the problem was you. One can avoid a lot of back tracking and embarrassment this way.

All I'm sayin' is put the Space Heater (clean at unity gain or slightly above) in front of the Smoke Signal and sit back and enjoy the ride.

I don’t have a Space Heater, but i did some mix and match with a Saturn VI before and a Bug Drive after, and, yeah…………..

I actually removed my Space Heater to try the Saturn VI, and that sounds great as well. The downside is that the previous owner installed the velcro "soft side" on the Saturn VI...what kind of monster does that?

The color Rainbow's End - how does it look exactly? I thought it was black'ish with colorful sparkle - but then I've seen lots of other sparkly colors and concluded that maybe you get whatever taste of the rainbow Mr. Box has left in the rattle can when it's time to apply the paintjob?

It's gloss black with rainbow sparkle. Pictures don't do it justice.

I took @el murdoque 's advice from another thread and played hookey from work this afternoon to do some tube rolling. A wise man ( @Kendescending ) said something about "a rabbit hole" but I didn't listen ...

I had a variety of tubes in the 12*** family around, from a low gain 12au7 to an ultra hg +++ 12ax7, and a bunch of various tubes in between.

I really like low gain on the PA. I'm not looking for breakup, rather a nice fat tone with lots of fundamental, and it delivers in spades. The 12au7 found a home there for sure. Reminds me of the SIB Fatdrive, but not so big and much more board friendly.

As I've said before, the Dr. Watson does very well with a high gain tube in V1. I ended up keeping the hg there and putting a NOS Eden branded tube in V2. I'm considering using it for OD, it sounds really sweet and zero loss of bottom end. Sweet, sweet, sweet.

The Smoke Signal is more of a complicated beast. The blue channel ended up with an old (50's) GE tube. Can't beat the harmonic breakup and touch sensitive OD. It sounds really, really good, lots of presence. The red channel is a different story. The ultra hg +++ was predictably face melting. Even with a low gain tube, still massive OD/distortion. Crunchy. Maybe even too crunchy ... I'm not sure if I would use the SS as an always on or as an OD, but I'm definitely rethinking my boards.

I just received my Smoke Signal yesterday to complement the Dr. Wattson I snagged off the classifieds a couple weeks ago.

I'm super pleased so far. The Dr. gives me something I've been long missing. And having gone through three Meatsmoke pre's in the past, the SS gives me something I've long missed.

I apologize to everyone whose emails and messages I had ignored today, I've been out and about. Finally took the kids to the aquarium, then went to a church halloween party where my chili won first prize in the chili cook-off.

Now I'm finally home and relaxing by sanding the walls of our basement so we can get it finished and painted before the carpet gets installed in 2 weeks.

Today was also NPD for me, but I haven't even had time to take pictures of the thing so no NPD report yet.

But suffice to say Echosaurus has been kicked off my board.

Hey Senor - Congrats on the day at the Aquarium with the kids and the Chili win - Personally I wasn't aware that Sushi ever could be combined with Chili - seems like a bit of a mismatch to me but perhaps I'm just a little too old fashioned for that .... Got a new Underground Accelerator in the mail yesterday, not in time for last nights gig but got to play around with it some this morning. Great pedal, well made, dead silent, and very responsive. Unfortunately its not going to work for what I am looking for, so thought I'd post it up here before I put it into the classifieds.

I play upright bass in a pretty loud NewGrass band - most of the time with an Eminence EUB with a Krivo magnetic pickup. I was looking for a pedal that would fatten up the bass a bit without really adding much grit to the sound. It does exactly that with my full-size bass with a piezo pickup, but with the EUB with magnetic pickup, if I bring the gain up at all the tone gets more gritty/fuzzy/distorted than I like. So I don't think this pedal is "the one".

PM me if anyone's interested otherwise I'll post it in the next few days.
