The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

@Sushi Box FX

Will we ever see a Sushi Trace Elliot preamp?

Like modeled from the V4 or V6 Trace tube amps, or perhaps from the hybrid SMX Trace amps?

The SMX amps featured a tube gain stage in the preamp section that you could blend in, for adjustable tube coloration, and they also featured the 2 band Trace compressor.`

Though I would be cool with a Trace SMX tube preamp even without the 2 band compressor feature added, though I think this could still be a cool feature to incorporate.

These amps still have quite a dedicated following, especially in Europe, though I admit not really having any idea if it would be a viable idea from a business point of view.

But I do know such a unit would definitely get an instant first place on my GAS list though.
Check out the Trace Elliott SM7 pedal. It has the preshapes and the 7 band graphic EQ, but no compressor and it's not tube. It does sound great - I picked one up a few years ago when I sold my TE heads and it's a preamp that will stick around. It really cops the TE tone very well.

They pop up on Reverb from time to time a lot of them pretty beat up. I managed to snag one in good shape. They are kind of a PITA because they are center neg and 18v. Maybe that and a Space Heater?

I'll look into it.

Heavy box = RAT type?
Heavy Box - RAT w/ diode switch
Fuzz Box - Catalinbread Merkin
Dirt Box - Bluesbreaker w/ extra gain
Verb Box - Culturejam Box of Hall
Echo Box - Mad Professor Deep Blue

All the stuff I used to build back when I didn't know what I was doing. Felt like throwing a few together for nostalgia and as practice to keep the old grey matter sharp.

Are these getting added to the lineup? Can I just order a box set?

Nope, they're all almost exact clones of things already on the market, so not planning to add them to the lineup. They may appear occasionally in contests/giveaways every now and then though. I like having something low enough cost that I can give them away without feeling like I'm taking a huge loss. I sent a couple to a friend last week because he's transitioning from acoustic guitar to electric and wanted a pedal recommendation.

EDIT: Apparently RAT and Deep Blue are the only ones actually still available new on the market. I was unaware of this. I mean I knew Box of Hall is a DIY project and the original Bluesbreaker is gone, but I didn't know Marshall wasn't making reissues or that Catalinbread discontinued the Merkin.

I'm still struggling on guitar (going on about 25 years now). I think more pedals would help. Could you please send Dirt, Verb and Echo Boxes to the NKB Charity for Crappy Guitar Players? I think that would help.

Several months ago I purchased a non-working early 70s Ampeg B-25B. I got the power amp working but there's still something going on in the preamp that I haven't been able to figure out so it's still sitting unused in my workshop.

I'm considering gutting it and building a B-15N inside instead, seems like a good December project. Thoughts? (don't give me your opinion, just tell me to do it)

Plug a Slampegg into the FX Loop Return and go to town.

I did, and it sounded pretty good, but Slampegg's output isn't hot enough to really push the power amp as hard as I want. Plus I've always wanted to try the preamp with 6SL7.

So you're too late, I've already started on the board design :p

Can confirm a 6SL7 preamp sounds pretty great. My Broughton P15 is a keeper. I love the breakup of the 6SL7. It's more crunchy and less hard farty distortion than the typical 12AX7 style gain breakup. Hard to describe.
I would actually love to play an SVT preamp (with the inductor midrange control) using 6SL7 tubes in place of the 12AX7s.

That would be super neat, I hope one day we can find someone with the technical know-how to make that happen.

The P15 is the bee's knees. It's also why much earlier I make the difference between the Slampegg OG and the 12AX7 version. The 12AX7 powers many Ampeg heads in terms of pre, but it's not a classic B-15N. It's the heart of my live rig. What it's missing is power amp tube stuff but I can simulate to a degree with the Two Notes C.A.B. M+. I haven't found another small pedal to do that.

EDIT: just saw this. Hm. https://www.simplifieramp.com/simplifier-classic/power-amp-sim

Hey senor - I trust you are NOT multi- tasking again while working on death ray laser projects at your day job ! LOL .... Since some of that recent multi- tasking hasn't always gone completely successfully for you - one wonders how it might affect the day job . We all saw how poorly that turned out for the Russians recently with their new found ability to make space stuff blow up into clouds of cosmic shrapnel - with luck no shuttles will be destroyed by the new floating debris field they created . You wonder if anyone over there actually thought thru what might happen if their device did work as planned - kinda seems like they didn't !!!! Just a thought anyway .... Now back to regular SB pedal oriented programming - Kelly

Well that looks neat. Someone in China already makes a $99 clone though, that would be hard to beat :P

Kind of? I have a handful of meetings today that don't actually concern me but that I'm supposed to sit in on for project stuff, so I call in and doodle schematics in my notebook. Also simpler stuff like turret layouts/amps I can draw a preliminary layout and easily pull it to the computer later.

2022 request: 6L6 power amp sound sim in a pedal that takes a real one and based on the B-15N. :)
I've looked into putting a 6L6 or even a 6V6 into a pedal-sized box, and I'm not really sure it's feasible. Power required pretty well means it's going to need a transformer, and since it's a power stage you'll want an output transformer, so two transformers and an octal tube gets big and hot. Rackmount maybe, but pedal sized is a stretch.

A legitimate power section with built-in power soak in different tube flavors would be a crazy DI box that I would have zero self-control over.

What abenatuesda is not what I want. I just want the simulation of the sound/saturation/resonance of the 6L6, not a whole power section with an amp. I have a power amp. Now, I get why from making such a pedal you may need a transformer or whatever, but that's a different issue. It may genuinely not be possible. I don't want a DI, etc.

The only analog way to accurately emulate a 6L6 power section is to make a 6L6 power section and throw a dummy load on the output so the signal can be run through a speaker sim/IR etc. This is how the SWR Interstellar Overdrive does it, they have a full EL84 push-pull power section with an output transformer and a dummy load on the output so you can run it as line level instead of speaker level. But it's no different from any 15W power amp, they just have a dummy load for it.

The only other way to do it with analog is just filters that have been tweaked to mimic 6L6 response.
