The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

Since I've been good the last couple days about crossing things off the to-do list, I decided I deserve a treat, so I put together a layout for MORE. It's the preamp section of Deep Dish, two tubes (12AU7/12AT7), single knob for output level, and tube output buffer, all in the typical (UA, Slampegg, etc) size box. I decided to start labeling the tubes on dual tube builds so tube rollers can know which position affects which part of the circuit.

After enjoying the Westinghouse so much I’m going to have to get this. It’s got more tubes so it’s better.

I have been playing Bass since 1975 and have never used a pedal [except tuner from Tuner out] or even considered one [Unreasoned 'Purist' fear of another cable and box of circuits between my Bass and Amp:)]

But I used Tube amp's in my early days['75-'85] and SWR tube preamp in 2000's with Original Band recording and live and have fond memories of tone.

I enjoy Rehearsing/Playing along with tracks with my PJB Bighead headphone amp and would like to try to add Tube Tone; clean mostly with slight overdrive available into mix along with my Markbass amp when Live.

I don't use tone controls much only when room necessitates.

Anyway:)

I just ordered a 'Space Heater' from May Batch and am looking forward to what may come.

It only has 1 tube but hoping that is enough:)

How about a Deeper Dish, or DD 2.0? Put me in line for one of those.....and in the spirit of "if I'm gonna dream, may as well dream big"........my Deeper Dish chock full o' chilis would have eq and HPF. Pinch me.

After saying "eventually" for approximately a million years, I finally got it wired up. I got the '57 Tweed Deluxe as well. Both sound excellent. I'll get them in enclosures eventually (uh-oh) and do more thorough testing before determining their futures.

I’m sitting here trying not to order a lab rat for may, I think that might do it. I’ll be ordering one of those as soon as it becomes available.

In other news, the preamp I was initially a little lukewarm about is starting to become my favorite: the JC Emerald.

It does this touch sensitive overdrive thing better than any pedal I’ve ever owned. It out-Geddy’s my YYZ pedal so much that I’ve removed that from my board. On its own, it’s a little shyer on low end than I’d prefer, but followed with a Mesa 610 cab sim on my Helix gives it all the low end I could ever hope to have. Great tube “feel” and sound that gets into an amazing drive sound when I dig in. It’s become my go to rock preamp.

It took me a minute or two to “get it” with this one, but I’m sure glad I kept at it, because I’m loving it now.

If you're looking at new I would probably push you toward UA. The tonestack is flexible enough that you can dial in some lovely brightness. I personally run it on the darker side, but it can do either. The goal with the UA design was to make it as close as I could to a one-size-fits-all preamp, and I feel like I did a pretty decent job.

If you're looking at used stuff as well I would also recommend looking at London Underground, and possibly Sunnday Drive.

Adding piezo pickup input impedance wouldn't be difficult, but it's something I would either have to do at the time of ordering boards or it would be extra hand-labor, which I'm trying to reduce.

HPF isn't something I'm planning to add onto everything. I am still working on a "step-up" DI that will have HPF/LPF, and it may end up on Gondwana as well, but that's probably the extent to which I'll delve into it.

Me personally...I would love to see an Underground Accelerator with HP and LP filters and a DI. That's because I run a Broughton Messenger and a UA or PA on all three of my boards. That, plus you would sell 5 million of them and would be rich beyond your wildest dreams.

Heck you could offer it in different formats such as a Slampegg version, JC version...

I'd be all over this. If a second gain channel with a footswitch could be added for some added on/off drive with a blend control....oh my

Thanks. Is it possible/beneficial to run the UA at 18v for more clean headroom? Also, what frequencies are the bass, mid, and treble set at?
