The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

Various Darkglass pedals, compressors, various Broughton pedals..anything that I would have always on with a buffer.

I have not been able to find a work around either.
Just out of curiosity, we’re either of you able to try a Dark Glass Hyper Luminal between them?
I did, and it eliminated my issue.

The case needs to be grounded to shield for RF noise, so any negative ground wires or terminals coming in contact with it will not induce noise.
Darn, that could have been an easy fix. I can't even tell if the tube is on with the bright LED. Maybe I can power it up with the bottom plate off? Mayhaps the tube is super microphonic, trying it with my wireless on it sounded like a flanger going, except no bass. Without the wireless, and nothing else in the signal path it just hisses and makes random, but consistent pops and scratching sounds. Tapping it doesn't induce any other noises.

Hot tip#1 Try a buffer buster (passive pickup emulator) between two squealing tube pedals.
Hot tip #2 If you really want to maximize the wonder of the Dr. Wattson, try feeding it with Alembic signature electronics. Wowee Zowee!

I had the impression that the noise was from the oscillation of the power supply used for the tubes rather the the tubes causing the issue. This one wonders if it is a power line or signal line issue? In my case I had a problem with a particular combination of pedals : an HW UA into a Southampton Ictineo. I had them on separate power sup[plies and tried an LBA 2020 in between as well as several other pedals that I still got the issue. I have two Ictineos and had the same issue with both, I also have a smd UA, PA and SS that none cause an issue into the Ictineo. I'm supposing that the higher voltage is causing the audible noise.

 
SUPER FUN ANNOUNCEMENT TIME:

So my goal for a while has been to work out a turnkey manufacturing deal with someone to make SMD pedals for me so I could have those ready to go anytime and sell them as in-stock, then I would be able to focus on handwired "custom shop" builds with more customization options. These SMD builds would all be the same finish, no options, but I wanted to pick something that would be likeable enough that people wouldn't hate it. I could then take these designs to an outside house that could do the enclosure milling, powdercoating, and printing for me. I haven't found anyone to do full turnkey for me as tube pedals are a bit different, but just having fully finished enclosures ready to go should give me considerable time savings on these builds.

In looking at historical data for orders, statistically I sell more "simple" artwork pedals than "full color" pedals, and as time has gone on the gap has kept widening to the point where I'm doing less than 10 full color pedals in August.

But there has been one exception that has been ordered as full color more often than not, and that is Slampegg. So I got together with my art department (the right side of my brain) and analyzed it. Rather than have abstract swirls or pictures of anything in particular, Slampegg has a simple color background and a small "logo" that differentiates it. So what would happen if I did the same thing on other pedals? I took this idea and played with a few ideas, which I sent out to the outside manufacturer to get sample enclosures made up for the first handful of designs I'm planning to do as partial-turnkey. I looked at the powdercoat colors they have available, and my favorite was a lovely silver sparkle. It's cleaner looking than just bare enclosures, but still pops nicely the way I want it to.

The enclosure samples showed up today, and I'm still at work, but I asked my dear sweet wife to open the box for me and send me pictures, because I am not a patient person :p

I like these enough to pursue them as a supplier for these enclosures. I spoke to another company that said they may be able to do circuit board assembly for me, so I could have pre-made enclosures and pre-wired boards (with pots and switches all attached and ready to go) and all I would have to do is put them together. I'll pursue that to see if it makes sense, but as I said just having pre-finished enclosures will save a lot of time on my side. I'm going to play with things in CAD and see if I can get the rounded edges on the vent slots like I do at home, but I think these are promising.

I love the silver, great choice for the non custom! An the designs looks great, but to me the Dr Watson doesn't work well. Maybe a silhouette along the lines of these?

I know you didn't ask me, but the "amp mode" I posted above works great.

I know that JHS makes the Prestige boost, which can act as a buffer like the AM, and they also make the Little Black Buffer.
No experience with the Prestige or LBB, but I expect them to be quality products.

How do these buffer pedals differ from a compressor or something that is transparent when engaged? I guess what I'm saying is...aren't all pedals buffered when they are engaged?

I'm gonna claim stupidity on this, as I don't know the technical aspects.
My basic understanding of the buffer, is to provide a signal strength similar to that of your bass going straight to the amp, as adding pedals in your signal chain will cause a "tone-suck", similar to having multiple pots on a passive bass.



TB experts, please correct me if I'm wrong.

Pretty sure @johnk_10 would be able to sum it up better.

These “buffer busters” that are being recommended seem like they are doing the opposite: they are meant to simulate an unbuffered signal. I guess that means there will be some high end loss which might be what fixes the problem.
