The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

Would a More provide enough boost for a piezo bass signal (about 5-10 MΩ impedance) so that it might not need another preamp?
Sounds like I need to pull the trigger on an upright so I can finally start answering questions about them firsthand :P The stock More has an input impedance of 1MΩ, but I have modded a couple for upright players to have a 10MΩ input impedance. As for whether or not that makes this ideal for only-preamp-in-chain, I'm not sure. Maybe one of our upright players with firsthand experience can weigh in?

gain wise it depends on what is after the pedal in your chain.

the furthermore will be a only-thing-in-chain for me, serving FOH and a stage speaker. the more will be what I'll use until that comes around. ;)
also, perhaps a tone bypass would be useful.

For me, it would be really cool if Furthermore could be switched between 1MΩ and 10MΩ input impedance.
 
I ended up with the More in the effects loop of an AI Clarus SL for my Realist equipped upright. The More is really cool as a piezo buffer but I needed eq so I was using the preamp input anyway and I found the More was a better fit buffering the eq’ed signal.

That said, I’m currently really, really happy with a Slampegg BeeHW (with a nos 12AT7) in front of the Clarus.

In general, for me, the 10Mohm input is too undamped. I prefer the 1Mohm.

Actually if I could have one “Wish List” type item… I’d love to have a Finally or More that could take a balanced XLR input and provide phantom power. I’d probably buy that in a heartbeat.

These are 34" scale passive electric uprights. NS Design also makes them in the "standard" 42" scale for about a hundred dollars more.

A laminated student upright set up with a passive pickup would probably set you back around twice as much.

I'm sure you could find a way to replicate with an acoustic bass (much smaller and affordable). A violin or cello would also work for that, and then you'd have a nice instrument for your kids to play.

Almost all acoustic bass guitars I've heard of have onboard preamps, so they don't need a 10MΩ input impedance. They work fine with 1MΩ.

"Don't go there" is the best advice I can offer.

The upright bass amplification world includes piezo pickup impedance matching or specialized pickup/microphone matching, possible phantom power needs, possible 10v in place of 48v phantom. Some players favor a pickup of some kind for feedback resistance blended with a microphone to get the mythical MBOL, "My Bass, Only Louder" tone.
Electric Upright Basses usually have a preamp of their own, which is a whole different market, closer to bass guitar, where impedance matching is not really a consideration.

For your own sanity, "don't go there". It is a small, very fragmented market.

If you are still tempted, explore a few threads in this forum: Amps, Mics & Pickups [DB]

Unless you really wanna play the upright for its own sake, this is the best advice. There are a few upright (double bass) players on TB that are hip to Sushi Box and I for one would/will gladly provide any input or feedback you want (pun intended?!)

Agreed, there are a few small piezo crystals that benefit from >1M input impedance but not many. There are more that benefit from lower than 10M IME.

The level from a piezo pickup is generally pretty close to that of an average magnetic pickup, needing nowhere near 28dB of gain to make up for the difference.

How does the Sunnday Drive X sound? Does it have a passive tone stack similar to the UA?
Yup, it has a Fender tonestack like UA, but the values are a little different. It's voiced slightly brighter if I remember right.
