I started poking at the idea of a Sushi Box wiki the other day and started putting together a list of everything I've offered over the last 3 years (that feels like 30 years). I'm sure I'm missing something, but this is what I've got so far:

As an owner of many of your pedals and follower of the industry for many years, inside and outside, I have to say that is an impressive lineup of pedals, progression of R&D and improvement and output for a one man shop. That all of your products have such a high quality and are such a fair price [that even this frugal shopper has no issue] is a testament to your mission statement.

I look forward to what 2023 and the years to come will bring from @Sushi Box FX. I will let AC/DC sing the anthem.

And, out of curiosity, how difficult or useful would it be to give other two tube pedals the Elementary treatment? Would JC Emerald work with one tube like Dr. Watson did?

A solid question, and the answer is of course "it depends." Dr. Wattson to Elementary was easy because Dr. Wattson only used 3 of the available 4 tube stages, the 4th was unused in the circuit. Also the tonestack was early in the circuit, so changing the end doesn't affect how the tonestack responds.

JC Emerald uses all 4 of the available tube stages. The last two stages form a DC-coupled cathode follower before the tonestack, so they could be removed and the tonestack could be tacked onto the output of the last gainstage, but you would lose a fair amount of gain and the output impedance would change as we no longer have the benefit of an output buffer.

Black Eye isn't really possible as it would sound completely different. The gain channel of Dreamcatcher is my attempt to condense Black Eye's 4 gainstages down to 3, and it went pretty well, but trying to condense it down further would get to the point that it just doesn't sound like Black Eye anymore.

On higher gain circuits it's common to spread the gain out among a higher number of stages rather than letting a small number of stages do all of the work, since more stages means more stability. This is why high-gain amps typically have more tubes in their preamps. You can tweak values and get Mesa-level gain out of less tubes, but it's going to be unstable and not sound as good.

Makes sense. Thanks for the thoughtful answer. I figured with the higher gain stuff (like black eye) it would make too big a difference to really work. I wasn't sure about any others.

Don’t change a thing about the JCE V2. It’s perfect as-is. Sure, a smaller footprint would be cool, but if it sacrifices the pedal’s character at all, it’s not worth it IMO.

So to be honest you just described a couple of aspects of the upcoming Venus X.
Its an active 4 band eq but also had a “lowend bump switch” and it’s tube saturated without necessary distortion but saturation (even in excess, depending on how much you want).

This sounds right for you.

I'm really interested to see this. I turn 50 at the end of this month. I may need to convince the minister for War and Finance that this would be a very worthy milestone present!!!!
