The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

Hey Sushi people - as far as tube preamps go I am very ignorant, so please bare that in mind when I ask the following.

My typical signal chain is P bass with rounds\tone @ 75% - EBS Comp - Darkglass VMT - Aguilar Tone Hammer DI. I like my tone but I'd like to see what a tube preamp adds.

My questions;

1. If I added a tube preamp to this chain, what will it do to my tone? Phatter bottom end? More complexity in overdriven tone?

2. What would the More add that is different to, say, the UA with tonestack defeated running clean?

I'm thinking the UA will be the pedal I try as it given me 3 options (clean pre, dirty pre, tube pre with Fender tonestack) - but what does the 2 tube More accomplish that is different than the single tube UA?

The underground accelerator is a great sushi box starting point for all the reasons you named: warmth, fat bottom, singing highs.

MORE offers other gifts: It isn't about overdrive though it has plenty of gain and can best be described as tone "special sauce". In particular, it's response is very amp-like (loathe to use that term, but it is apropos) and infuses my tone with dimension, heft, and presence.

I use both devices in tandem and given the tubes involved, it pretty much approximates a tube amp when it's being pushed hard.

So, don't think either/or with these two magic boxes: think both my friend.

More is beautiful sounding but subtle. IMHO unless you want it for it's heavy boost ability, it's much more useful in a recording context than live (IMHO it's too subtle to mean much in a live mix). I'd 100% go with a UA, which has a very wide range of utility. It's also smaller and eats less power. UA is MUCH MUCH more versatile/polyvalent than More. You can use it to warm your current sound with some overtones, or as an alternate effect to add major fur +/- bass boost.

@jcburn I've compiled my comments on the MORE


Our tube fiend @Sushi Box FX has created yet another tasty pedal to add to our combo plates of sonic mayhem. The MORE is that extra ting-tangy warm and gooey tube goodness that is difficult to describe but once your ear experiences a taste you must always add it ala carte`. On it's own it is a warm transparent boost but give it something to work with and it just makes it MORE. As our Cajun friend Justin Wilson might say it makes things More Better.


MORE has the nearly indescribably Jenny in Sequins as a dear friend used to say quality, or Je Ne Sais Quois perhaps that should have been the name.

Subtle is not a word I'd use in describing MORE, but it is so hard to describe the affect almost like Umami once you taste it you know what it is, and you miss it when it isn’t there.


MORE is the King of Tone like MSG is the King of Flavor!

The sonic character improvement of the MORE may seem subtle at first but once heard it is unmistakable. In my recording setup through my reference monitors or headphones there is a bit of added dimension and clarity afforded by the uber-clean parallel tube stages. To my ear it is very much like a studio tube Mic preamp than a guitar amp gain stage which all of the other @Sushi Box FX pedals are based on.* If your needs are for a super clean preamp with depth then the MORE may be a great choice, many of my clients want crispy clean bass parts and the MORE gives me that.


* There is a common practice in many studios to record bass using vintage studio gear from Mic pre amps, compressors and EQs to utilize the qualities of the input, output circuitry and stages that often include parallel gain and buffer stages as well as transformers even if the effect is bypassed as Invalid Link Removed has done with the MORE. Thanks to Invalid Link Removed we have that in a 9v powered pedal board friendly form.


That to me is the unique beauty of the MORE, that getting those 4 stages of beautiful pristine tube goodness in a 9v powered single sized pedal is a freaking miracle for little more than 2 Benjamins, where before it was only found in 2 to 3 space 19" racked studio gear like mic preamps and compressors.

i own a few of his pedals (early mini tube London Underground with a modified tonestack (like the UA), a DR Watson, a Slampegg and a UA (newest version) so i'm pretty familiar with his pedals.

I've been on this thread since it started, have read all or most posts and know this has come up at least but it would be easier to ask what has been posted before than trying to find it in ~800 pages -
for anyone who has swapped tubes on their Slampegg X with 12AT7, 12AU7 or other, what were your findings?

I put a nos JAN 12AT7 in mine… more gain before crunch time and slightly more gooey lows with the bass switch engaged.

Yeah I grabbed one last night when count was at 4 (was at 5 few hours before that). Looks like Sushi B sold 5 in the last 12 hrs. Prob this thread gassing people up.

Pushing the more with a barbershop has a better tube overdriven tone than a UA alone in my personal trials. Haven’t recorded with it but it’s a beast combo in a live mix-
