As cool as that would be, it's a ton of work to get one of these built up. I'm not a luthier, just some guy with a CNC machine, but with the amount of time it takes to do one of these builds I would have to charge actual luthier prices to make it worth my time, and I'm not comfortable charging that much for something.
This build so far, my approximate costs:
I still need to make the pickguard, do the finish, shielding, and final assembly, and with the amount of time I've spent I would already call it $300 worth of labor. By the time this is done I could easily see it being a $2k+ bass if I count my labor. And it will be an awesome instrument, but I still wouldn't feel good charging $2k for it knowing the quality of bass you could otherwise get for $2k.
- Body - $300 (in stock at Warmoth)
- Pickups - $250 (Nordstrand PJ set)
- Bridge - $60 (Hipshot Kickass)
- Finishing supplies - $60 (Wudtone)
- Preamp - don't remember, maybe $80 or so between the two boards with the tube
- Battery - $20
- Pickguard - $35 (aluminum sheet I will be custom milling)
- Control plate - $15 (blank I will be drilling)
Now if I could grab some cheap unfinished J bodies off eBay and throw them on the CNC and just sell a routed body and the preamp and let you luthier the rest of it yourself, that could be more feasible.
Power comes from a rechargeable 9.6V LiPo RC car battery in the back of the bass. I will be using an aluminum pickguard, but the heat coming off a single 12AX7 is minimal, I doubt it would be enough to warp plastic.This is TOO cool!

Would be nice to try that but my setup is not geared that way.I was listening to some Chet Baker singin’ on the radio the other day and noticed quite a bit of tube compression and reverb on his vocals. I rejigger’d my rig to put my “More” through the FX loop of the XLR vocal channel in my amp, cranked the saturation and reverb, and absolutely nailed the tone. Anyone else find their “more” indispensable for their vocal channel?

That does sound like it could be a potential tube failure. Let me know how it goes when you have a chance to open it up and try out some other tubes.Anyone have experience with tubes dying? Having an issue with More.
Was playing through my beloved More last night; over the last week it has developed some intermittent crackling, which I initially attributed to some RF from my cellphone. Sadly it seems it was actually a failure of some sort, as last night after playing for 20 minutes the crackling worsened quickly and the volume dropped dramatically; this is now it's usual, still passing some signal but with a lot of crackling and distortion.
I didn't get a chance to open it up yet, but I'm curious if this sounds like a typical tube failure. I have a few other tubes I can try in it this evening. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the stages are in parallel for this pedal, so it could just be a single tube dying given that it still passes some signal? Curious for thoughts.

As long as I have an active, adjustable mid boost elsewhere in the signal chain, the passive tone stacks are fine. Otherwise, the choice is flat or some degree of relative mid scoop, which never quite satisfies my ears.
I just got the new Diamond Bass Comp/EQ pedal, and the mid control and tilt EQ seem to be hitting the spot nicely in conjunction with the Slampegg. I just have the compression set super lightly to snag some peaks.

Correct, I stopped making the Deep Dish compressor as it was effectively a knockoff of the Effectrode LA-1A, and I'm trying to steer clear of knockoffs. A compressor is still on the to-do list (it's one of the aforementioned distractions), but I don't currently have on in the lineup.I’m late to the party, but it seems like a tube compressor is no longer part of the line-up, or am I missing something?
