As cool as that would be, it's a ton of work to get one of these built up. I'm not a luthier, just some guy with a CNC machine, but with the amount of time it takes to do one of these builds I would have to charge actual luthier prices to make it worth my time, and I'm not comfortable charging that much for something.

This build so far, my approximate costs:
  • Body - $300 (in stock at Warmoth)
  • Pickups - $250 (Nordstrand PJ set)
  • Bridge - $60 (Hipshot Kickass)
  • Finishing supplies - $60 (Wudtone)
  • Preamp - don't remember, maybe $80 or so between the two boards with the tube
  • Battery - $20
  • Pickguard - $35 (aluminum sheet I will be custom milling)
  • Control plate - $15 (blank I will be drilling)
I still need to make the pickguard, do the finish, shielding, and final assembly, and with the amount of time I've spent I would already call it $300 worth of labor. By the time this is done I could easily see it being a $2k+ bass if I count my labor. And it will be an awesome instrument, but I still wouldn't feel good charging $2k for it knowing the quality of bass you could otherwise get for $2k.

Now if I could grab some cheap unfinished J bodies off eBay and throw them on the CNC and just sell a routed body and the preamp and let you luthier the rest of it yourself, that could be more feasible.

Or, maybe one could send you the body and pickups and just get it routed and preamp and pickups installed. Hmmm

I mean, a one-off with attention to details that help with longevity and stability... one of us would spend some eddies on that for sure. I don't have said currency all at once, but a few days ago, my brother had me tally up my "baby" board's total value, and it came up to two grand with a carrying case. Slowly built up for sure, but what that says is, $2K is not a crazy number in the music gear world. Juuust saayiiinnnggg *fading echoes*

I can think of so many reasons not to make this part of your product line, besides, it’s nice to have something special just for you.

Still, if you were to sell just the preamp, and a routing template, you could avoid all the hassle of modifying someone’s body or having to source a body.

My main pedal board is a bit over $2500. and I don't even use a fancy power supply, that would bump it to over 3k. Plus I have more than one set up. Only one of my many @Sushi Box FX a HWUA.

@Sushi Box FX put some videos on youtube. It couldn't be simpler to swap tubes. just unplug it first. It looks as simple as swapping a light bulb on his video. He's got multiple videos if this one doesn't look like yours.

Awww man, pony up and just try it. It’s not hard. It might inspire you to try to open up something else down the line and DIY repair or modify it. It’s just four screws and you’re not going to break anything. We’re all rooting for ya!

As mentioned you shouldn't have to do any disassembly apart from removing the back plate to swap a tube. It's not as easy as I originally wanted it to be, but I tried to make it as easy as I reasonably could without making the enclosures bigger.

Speaking of swapping tubes, I love the red channel sound of the Dreamcatcher, but it is pretty hot and would like to see if I could tame it just a tad and get a little headroom. I thought I saw someone post about this with the Dreamcatcher, but can't find it. If I roll in a 12AT7 for the red channel, I just want to make sure that it has no effect on the Blue (UA) channel and make sure I can still get those hard driven tubey fuzzy sounds I'm getting now, just with some more headroom. Just want to make sure this is something that is viable before I consider swapping.
Also, what type/brand of 12AT7 have folks here had the best results with? TIA

You're correct, V1 is the input stage for both channels, but V2 only affects the red channel, so you can swap that one for a lower gain tube without affecting the blue channel.

I obviously use JJ/Tesla tubes exclusively in production stuff, but for personal stuff I'm partial to NOS GE and RCA tubes, which are usually among the most common and reasonably priced USA-made tubes you can still find. Raytheon and JAN Philips are also excellent as they were intended for military use and generally go for reasonable prices.

My absolute favorites are British Mullard and Amperex Bugle Boy, but they often go for higher prices so I don't have many of them.

Tube rolling in @Sushi Box FX pedals is pretty easy once you do the first one, I can do it easily even with my bear paw hands.
