The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

I just bought a Fender Engine Room LVL5 power supply and it’s excellent.
5 isolated 9v outputs @ 500mA each.
It is extremely well made and comes with a variety of connection cables. It easily powers my Hagerman tube compressor, Slampegg Bee and finally DI. I have a Peterson tuner, reverb, EQ and BBE sonic stomp on a 4 port daisy chain and the tube pedals each have a dedicated power output from the PS. The Fender uses a standard IEC power cable, not an external power supply, and has plenty of headroom for tube pedals and it doesn’t inject any noise or hum. I’m very pleased with it.
 
Any updates on the microphone preamp? How'd she turn out?
It got shelved while I shift Venus X into production. The microphone preamp uses the same Lightning Boy transformer that I use for D.I. purposes as both input and output transformers, which means it has just over $160 worth of transformers in it. Not the kind of thing I can spare when the demand for Finally and Venus X is where it is. I want to get at least the first batch of Venus X built and gauge what I think ongoing demand will look like, then I'll work to re-stock my production pedals that have been dwindling, and then I'll turn focus back to my R&D projects.
 
Some quick notes before I forget:

  • VENUS X - preordering will open June 15 at midnight, central time (UTC-5). I will be starting with a batch of 25 and gauge interest from there to determine what the next batches will look like. Long term goal will be to make these another standard offering that I keep in-stock regularly, but as this is the most complex and expensive pedal I've ever built, I'm using preorders to get it started off. Price for this batch will be $500 per unit.
  • Vacation - I will be taking a vacation June 15 - June 25, partially because I need it and partially because the Venus X components will need time to arrive after they're ordered. I will still be reachable if any questions come up, and I'll still be around here from time to time. I've been told I should stay off the forums when I'm on vacation, but frankly I don't just browse forums to support my products, I do it because I like browsing forums. Talking about gear is as much a hobby of mine as playing music is, so I'll be around the forums regardless.
And some smaller notes:
  • Dreamcatcher and Detective - both are being redesigned to more effectively use the amount of space I have inside the enclosure, which will spread out the rows of knobs a little more and make them more aesthetically pleasing. I'm not making any major changes to the circuits, but I am adding separate ATTEN trimpots for the clean and dirt channels on both to allow the level to be balanced better between the two channels.
  • Prototype evaluation - I still have some prototypes (namely Grand Slampegg and SBVT II) that I've been meaning to get out to my local testers, and I keep forgetting to do it. I'll try to get that done when I return from my vacation so something is still happening on the R&D side while I'm working on Venus X builds.

Venus X is a two-tube preamp, but it has a lot more going on under the hood than just a couple of tubes. My benchtop power supply is telling me Venus X pulls about 680mA on a 9V supply, but I just tested it on my Cioks DC7 on a 660mA 9V port and it's running perfectly. I'm going to run it overnight to make sure there won't be any long-term issues, but for now everything looks perfect when running from the Cioks. The sounds is exactly as it should be, and all the internal voltages are reading right where they're supposed to be.
 
Apologies if it's been answered already, but is there any info on the cab sim in Venus X? E.g. is it analog/digital, what cab it's based on, etc.?

I don't know much about cab sims and the like (I just use the ones in my HX Stomp), just trying to figure out a rough idea of what it might sound similar to.

IIRC it is analog and based on a popular 4x10.
The cabsim is based on a popular 4x10 cabinet, but I never actually said it was analog. I've never been happy with the way analog "fixed" cabsims work, and @TonyP- and I discussed the possibility of using an impulse response (IR) based solution instead. It was difficult to implement, but we're very pleased with the result.

I think the DC7 can share the max outputs across sockets - so if you don’t have lots plugged in it can give more than rated output on a socket.

I know that's true with the OneSpot CS series power supplies, so those would obviously be fine, but I'm not sure if it's the case on the Cioks supplies. My understanding was that each port has its own limit.

They're isolated, but if you use a flex cable adapter then you can make it happen. I use an 8800 flex cable that creates a parallel connection across the two outlets to enable me to get the required mA with the DC10 or my DC5.

If it does, I'm fully prepared to answer any and all questions. I make design decisions, and from my experience in the industry, I'm used to defending my design decisions.

The first question is likely to be something to the effect of HOW COULD YOU BETRAY US AND USE A DIGITAL DEVICE WHEN YOU ALREADY HAVE TUBES IN THERE???

I'll start with background. This isn't the first time I've mixed digital with tubes. Echosaurus Valve and Glass Butterfly are recent examples of using tubes to get better results from technology that does something tubes are incapable of doing by themselves. Not to pat myself on the back, but I think they sound pretty good. Also remember Gondwana? I spent a good amount of time and money doing research and evaluation to get an IR loader to work in a tube scenario. All of the development I did on that project rolled directly into the setup I used in Venus X.

Now let's talk about cabsim, or speaker emulation. Why do we need it? Some of us obviously don't, as we plug directly into an amp and deal with everything from there. To those this will have no effect, as the digital processor is only used for the cabsim, and with the cabsim off you have a 100% analog signal path.

Why didn't I use an analog cabsim? Well I tried that first. I tried a number (7 I think?) of analog cabsim options and tweaked them to see if I could get the results I wanted. There were a couple that didn't sound bad, but I wasn't thrilled with any of them. None of them really gave what Tony and I were looking for. This is when the idea was floated to use an impulse response (IR) so we could use something directly tuned to sound like Tony's cab that he is already accustomed to using. The number of players using ampless rigs has skyrocketed since the use of IR became widespread with devices like Helix, Kemper, NeuralDSP, and others. The reason being that, with modern computing power, you can get a more realistic response than you can with a fixed EQ like an analog cabsim.

What is an impulse response? Put simply, an impulse response is a dynamic EQ that adjusts certain frequencies differently based on the input they receive. A physical speaker does not have a fixed response, so a fixed EQ can't accurately model the way a speaker behaves. The processor for the IR looks at the incoming signal and adjusts the output accordingly based on an algorithm that has been programmed in to tell it how to react. This concept has existed in DSP for years, but the obvious issue of DSP latency prevented it from becoming widespread until processors were able to get small enough, fast enough, and affordable enough to stick in guitar gear.

So the decision to use IR may be a controversial one, especially IR paired with tubes, but I am confident that this was the right decision to deliver the best-sounding product, and I am very proud of how I was able to implement it into what is already an amazing sounding preamp. I am incredibly pleased with how Venus X has turned out, and I really think it is the best possible product that I can make right now.

So, is this the first pedal to have tube, analog, and digital in it?
Not really. All tube audio* circuits are inherently analog, and Echosaurus Valve and Glass Butterfly have a digital processor. The one in Venus X is significantly more powerful though, as the processor in those isn't anywhere near powerful enough to run an IR.


*I have to specify tube audio circuits because all electronics, including computers, used to be tube driven. I've worked on tube computers at my old day job, where tubes were used to pass digital (1s and 0s) data, and it was a nightmare. An interesting nightmare that I'm glad I did once, but a nightmare nonetheless.

Since this technology can do a good job of simulating a cab, do you think it could be used to build a pedal that would make a bass guitar sound more like an acoustic double bass?

That's a good question. I know some people use acoustic guitar IRs to make piezo pickups sound more acoustic-ish, it would be interesting to see if a similar thing could be done to get an uprightesque sound from an electric bass.
