The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

i know that Sunn Model T's are pretty popular with bass players but after owning mulitples of A LOT of Sunn amps, IMO, the 200S/190B is/was the the best sounding one out of all of them, and the 2000S/350B was a pretty close second. i'd like to see a Sushibox 200S or a 2000S in the future. and by the way, it's a very simple circuit.

Same. I’ve always wanted to try a 200/2000S.

still a pretty vague hint:woot::woot::woot:

Yeah it took me a second to figure mine out, it
The last one I had was pretty well built from someone I knew, it ran at 15V and I think I remember him connecting 2 pins on the valve to combine voltage on the heaters, I think he did that for less tax on the supply, I can't remember its been a while. But it did sound good, I know starved is basic marketing hype but I've heard at least 3 now that rival other 200+ plate volt preamps, breakup and tone wise, headroom was always to be desired though. There's one more I've heard good reviews, but its really hard to get ahold of
Yeah, 12A*7 tubes can either run 6.3V (or so) to heaters and pull 300mA or run 12.6V (or so) to heaters and pull 150mA. That's part of why I wanted to do the X Series of preamps, 12V supply but much lower current draw. Headroom is the biggest thing for plate voltage, but there are some other factors as well. Maybe I'll do a 27V vs 200V A/B comparison on the Edison, just for fun :)

Doesn't look too bad, a preamp pedal would stop after the first half of V2 as the second half is the phase inverter. I can't promise it's something I'll work on immediately, but I'll definitely take a look at it.

awesome! thanks!

That would be a fun experiment, in your "free" time of course. I know you've mentioned noble clones, and possibly a DI, but would there be an advantage to having a transformer with these tube pedals? I didn't realize how much they change harmonics until I played with a variac and some old preamps with and without transformers, again this was a bit ago though, I'm sure things have changed

I vote for a SB “ heavy “ Edison tube version . The actual Edison bass video sounds very good for sure but I can understand why some think it’s too subtle and are looking for more balls from it . It seems like there might be a delicate balancing act between beefing it up while maintaining the sweetness the original has - kinda like threading a needle - Kelly

Are you talking about power transformer or output transformer? A power transformer won't impact your tone. When I first started playing with tube preamps I did an A/B of the same design with a transformer/rectifier setup vs. an SMPS set to the same B+ voltage, and there was absolutely no discernible difference.

Output transformers will always add something. That's why Effectrode puts the isolated output on the LA-1A; it's not a D.I., it's just a 1:1 ratio transformer in line with the signal, but the way it behaves with the sound adds some "flavor" that wasn't there before.

Yeah I'm really excited to see how it goes. I've only ever owned an amp with an EF86 in the preamp once, and it was for about 2 days (bought it broken and fixed to flip) but I remember liking the tone of it. If I were to try a mini-tube version I would need to find a suitable mini pentode, which are admittedly less common than triodes like 6N21B. I do have one that would be worth trying, and an idea for a couple others, but that will take some more reading.

I'm getting ahead of myself. I'm really excited to plug the thing in and play with it :p

Right? Gotta start there and play the thing.

Some kind of Sushi Box version of an Edison would be cool of course, but seems like some form of tube DI would accomplish some of the same things, along with having a DI. I'll be interested to see where you land with all the pedal design suggestions/requests in this thread by the time the March builds roll around.

Well kind of both but mostly output. Power can help with power requirements no? but I guess a little one on the output, is it possible with these enclosures? I know price would change

I might be able to fit an isolation transformer like Effectrode uses, maybe I'll pick up a couple with my next Mouser order to try them out and post A/B clips.

If you did the 200S design with some way to simulate tube rectifier sag that would be a cool thing.
Edit: After glancing at the schematic again I see it is not a tube rectified amp lol. Still though, would be cool.

The Echosaurus is freaking rad! I've only played through it for 5 minutes though. I spent 3 hours last night trying to troubleshoot the new Empress Bass Comp static/clicking issue just to find out this morning that it's a design flaw... Anyways, there will be more Echosaurus playing tonight and I'll give a better review in the coming days.

I haven't even plugged it in yet, but that packaging is freaking slick. I love it.

Just submitted an order to upgrade my Slampegg & PA orders for Feb to their respective X-Series models! Also my Wrecking Ball was delivered today, but I get all my mail delivered to my grandfather’s house in the suburbs since I live in the city and don’t want my packages to get stolen off my doorstep where I live. So I’m gonna swing by his place and pick it up tomorrow, can’t wait to see how it came out!

Just saw your order go through, and let me know what you think of Wrecking Ball. I've come really close to discontinuing it a handful of times because it takes so much power and gets so hot, and the tubes get sensitive when the gain is high, and it's taken 4 versions of the board to make it stable enough for practical use.

But the thing sounds so good.

Pictures don't capture the beauty of this pedal, but here's one anyway:

Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you how well that finish came out, it was actually easier than I thought it would be. And I agree, part of the beauty is the way the light hits it, and it's hard to capture that really well on pictures. This is the best I was able to get:

I’ll definitely let you know how it goes when I get a chance to use it, I’ve wanted a Mesa Rectifier for like ten years but have never been able to justify getting one - especially now that I play more bass than electric guitar. So I’m glad I found out about the Wrecking Ball and can finally get that rectifier tone without going all in on a head! I’m in the process of demoing guitar for a bunch of songs I’m working on so I’ll probably use it on a recording and I’ll absolutely share it when I do. Anything special I should know about it RE the sensitive tubes? I got a current doubler cable for my CIOKS too so hopefully that’ll work and I won’t need to get a one spot.
