The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

I use 12AU7's in my Slampegg, UA and Finally. 12AX and 12AT's were too hot for my liking, they distort too easily. I can drive the 12UA's and get good tube saturation before distortion and that happens when pushing them to their limits. I like the even harmonic enhancement that tubes give me but without distortion. Just my 2 cents...

This man understands
That's a step below an at7 right? Low output lol. But I may try that one too... I mostly run my UA with enough gain to bring in just a little grind when digging or hitting octaves or whatnot. I took the ax7 out and put a at7 in there and like it better. Good to hear I can find tune the slampegg too. Cheers

Yes lower output. But with a bass amp or other pedals upstream that doesnt matter (see quote above)?

Edit: Last sentence to read better with "that doesnt matter".

Great info thanks. I run it similarly. Several responses here look like I gotta try a 12au7 in both my UA and slampegg.

It doesn't matter, not to me. Sorry I didn't mean to sound contrary. Lower output seems good, like it's the right direction for me to try as I rarely push much distortion. Mostly going for tubey fatness and enhancement. Thanks!

Update after installing 12AT7 as suggested by @Sushi Box FX. IMHO this might be a better choice especially for bass players interested in this pedal as it seemed to offer a better dial in range for saturation settings letting me go from a cleanish through crunch to full blast. The cleanish is not much improved but the added range is helpful for dialing in saturated tones. I can go from a Chris Squire to Lemmy to Felix Pappalardi/ Mountain tone, Noel Redding/Hendrix and Jack Bruce Marshall tones as well.

The everything on 10 is super massive but still defined and punchy. I'm calling it El Capitan

FWIW I used a small screw driver to push up the tube.
Which tube did you replace with the 12AT7? Just V1? Or was it both? I really like the JCE, but if I could bring it's volume down a bit it would be helpful.

The 12AT7 stayed in V1 after also trying a 12AU7 as well as a JJ 12AX7MG, all 3 sounded good but the AT7 won out.

The 12AX7MG is in my original issue UA I use for guitar and fretless bass, it has an enhanced mid range and smoother saturation curve. I am thinking of trying a 12AX7MG in my Smoke Signal as well.

I have an observation that I just came to realize, and I’m wondering if @Sushi Box FX or anyone else have noticed this, as well. All of my Sushi pedals have been plugged in/powered by separate Triad wall warts, each at 9v and with 2.0A or 2.5A. I also own Cioks DC 7 and 8. For the first time, I just tried powering my Dr. Watson through the Cioks, at 9v and I noticed a bit of difference in tone. I switched back and forth several times and also tried doing the same with my Smoke Signal and JC Emerald. I noticed that when using the Cioks, there was a bit of low end loss or possible loss of headroom. They all just didn’t seem to have the deeper response or weight in tone that they do when powered with the individual Triad wall warts. I did try them each one at a time, and the Cioks was only at 40% load. I don’t have any of the current doubler cables to test out. Has anyone else noticed this at all? Do you think doubling the current for the pedals with the Cioks may help? Btw, this was not a huge difference and was just played at home, so live it may not be noticeable at all. It was just kind of a ‘huh’ moment realization there was a difference and that I liked it better with the wall warts.

That's very unusual, the 660mA supplied by the Cioks should be more than enough to get the pedals running at 100% of the current they need, I wouldn't expect any difference in sound from having more current available that they aren't using.

This sounds familiar to me. Not from personal experience but from others on this forum reporting similar findings. That might have been with other manufacturers tube pedals (maybe the LA-1A?) but there seems to be something about separate wall warts that brings a slight improvement. Can't remember where I read that though, sorry.

The Finally finally arrived! :D
I like it. When I A/B the Khan with the HX Stomp, I am having a hard time telling if the Khan is doing much to my patches. The new amp models and adding the Noble emulation have really brought it a long way. The Khan thickens things up, but so subtly that it's hard to tell what it's doing anymore. More of a feel thing.
As for the Finally, it definitely has the tube thing going on as well. I feel like it may not be as "thick" as the Khan but the Finally can certainly add some grit where with the Khan, you get what you get. I am not set up in a way to easily A/B the Khan and Finally with quick switching. By the time you swap cables around your ears have adjusted again and it's hard to tell how different they really are. I guess that's a good thing though, I didn't notice such a drastic difference that one certainly won over the other. I am going to gig the Finally for a while, put the Khan in the closet, and see if anyone notices. It is more compact and easier to power than the Khan so it has that going for it.

One question: Is there any advantage to powering the Finally with 12V vs 9V? I notice a little bit more level available but is that all? Am I missing something?

There's no advantage to increasing the Finally's voltage. As far as the tonal differences you describe above are concerned, if they're that subtle/ equivocal on their own, I cannot see how they'll be of any real world significance in a studio mix, let alone a live one. Cork sniffing tube subtleties can be fun, but IMHO it's a tonally irrelevant splitting of hairs.....I am fully aware that my nihilism in this regard is not shared by all ;)

I got the enclosure situation for Finally v2 figured out so the website pictures have been updated and the second handful of builds will go out this morning. I have parts coming next week to fill the remaining backorders (for now anyway, people keep ordering) so I'm hoping I can get to a point where I can build up stock so I'm not building up a waitlist.

Is there a current production pedal based on the Ampeg SVT?
Not yet, it's in the works. I did SBVT a while ago but I was never 100% satisfied with it. SBVT II has a working prototype and just needs me to sit down and go through my notes with it.

Sushi and all Society members… I have a hand wired UA, and had it on my board as the first pedal for some time. I never ran the gain above maybe 1pm, well today I turned it up and got a high-pitched squeal. And the squeal wouldn’t go away until I turned the gain down to just under 3 o’clock. It still has the stock JJ ECC83S. Is this why some folks have used a lower gain tube? Is this normal? I ran it from a 500 mA Boss PSA and a 1500 mA 1-spot to make sure it wasn’t power related. Chain was guitar > cable > UA > cable > amp.

Could be your tube has gone microphonic—probably time for a new tube.
