The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

Just got this today.

Alright, figured something out with the CNC. For the round holes if I slow down to the same speed as the old CNC it goes fine. On the vent slots I can actually get away with going a little faster, and I just figured out (totally not a machinist) how to run two different speeds for different parts of the CNC program, so this will still save a bit of time, especially since the slots was always the slowest part on the old CNC.

I am also not a machinist but I work with machinists so I've picked up a few basic things. Not sure if this is helpful but here goes: Aluminum is a pretty gummy material and has a habit of sticking to tools, which can dull the cutting surface, causing premature wear and buildup of heat. It is important to select tooling that is designed for cutting aluminum, know if said tool requires coolant, and set your spindle speed correctly to give the proper surface feet per minute at the cutting diameter of the tool (larger diameter tools require slower spindle RPM compared to smaller diameter tools to produce the same speed).

With the correct tooling it should be possible to cut aluminum very quickly without the need for coolant. Also another tip, make sure your parts are well secured because getting chatter (especially with cutting through thin material) can decrease the efficiency of the process.

I found some better suited and higher quality, they'll be here Saturday. Until then I've found a good feed/speed combo that gives good results in reasonable time with my cheap bits.

And definitely a good note on securing, on the previous machine it was weak enough that a friction-fit into my wooden jig was enough to hold it, but I tried that on the new machine and the enclosure jumped right out. So I got some heavy duty clamps, and the boxes aren't going anywhere.

I actually just finished the last batch for the night, and it went much better now that I balanced out the speeds.

Good to hear you are dialing in the process but please pace yourself some - that post was at 2:19 east coast time . That’s a long day and as one who was once young and now isn’t - those days can catch up with you later on and wreck what might be an otherwise very healthy middle age . I know I sound like a grinchy old fart but the real race goes to the tortoise rather than the hare . Enjoy your family and take care of yourself - the pedal fanboys can wait a little ! .... Are you cutting these dry? Using a coolant or even brush kerosene or cutting oil on can make a massive difference.
I’ve done my fair share of machining aluminum parts for race bikes. I always use cutting oil for clean cuts and to prevent aluminium from galling on the cutting bit.
Even if I’m cutting quick and easy on a mill on small parts, I’ll use some “6 in 1” spray.
Nothing good happens with dry cutting over time. Sooner or later it catches up with either your bits or your parts. Even a quick small spritz of lube on the bit can be very helpful.

I'm getting better, I promise :P I don't think I have a legitimate illness, but I have trouble sleeping when I still have problems left to solve. It's not so much "things to do" as I will ALWAYS find things to do, but if something isn't working I have trouble walking away from it until it's fixed.

I used to use oil on the old machine, but I stopped because it was cutting just as well dry, but that's a good point, I'll pick up some cutting oil to use. I wash all the enclosures before powdercoating anyway, won't hurt anything to have a little oil on there.

I'm a Toolmaker by trade, but I've been in emergencies services for many years now. Most of my milling and lathe work was manual, but did a little bit of programming and CNC milling operations.
Most materials cut better with a good coolant using a soluble oil, but non ferrous metals often react better to kerosene, or similar.
