Quick question on using different tubes and the effect on the sound, does turning down the gain on a finally with a 12AX7 sound essentially the same as a 12AU7 with it's gain turned up, or is there a difference in the way it sounds due to how they work etc?
I'm enjoying my standard finally V2, but rarely have the gain higher than halfway, usually less, so this got me thinking a little bit about whether a lower gain tube would be a useful choice. I guess at the end of the day I'll just try it, but was interested in if there's much difference besides the range of gain on tap.
There is a difference. Usually with harmonic content and compression.
Be fore warned the Smoke Signal is a beast especially the red or drive channel but if that is what you seek it rules. Mine is on a board used for rock tones.

My Smoke Signal (with the EQ mod) runs a 12AT7 in V2, and it’s my sweet spot. It tames the red channel just perfectly. Still gets pretty nasty, but with a wider usable range of gain.
So in an oversimplified way would you say it can get more "tubey" with less clipping as you turn the gain up?
Those are the exact pedals that I own and use, along with a finally DI. Each is unique, effective and sound great. Good luck with your research and let us know what you decide
Do you have both the Detective and Dreamcatcher?
How does the grit channel compare on the two? I like the clean channel from Elementary better than UA from the demos I've watched, but I'm not as sold on Dr. Watson.
I'm kind of stuck between picking up The Detective, Dreamcatcher, or just an Elementary. Looking for the clean channel mostly but figure I might as well go for a two channel pedal.
Not sure if this will help, but I have a fabulous demo of Dreamcatcher that will be up in the next day or two.
What is the tone stack like on the Bassdude? Fender passive? Bass and treble at 0 is flat and boost only with a fixed mid?

The main purpose of the sale will be to sell off in-stock stuff, particularly Bassdude, so the sale will last as long as it needs to.
With the recent discussion on gain and the effect of different tubes I thought I'd throw in a demo here that might help. I just got my Undergound Accelerator recently and I've been trying out different versions of the same tracks to figure out what tones I like best out of it. So I did a clean and dirty pass, panned the clean left and the dirty right.
Signal path is American Deluxe P Bass -> UA -> Neunaber Iconoclast (w/ a very rough SVT 115 approximation) -> Shure X2U (yeah it's meant for mics but it's clean and works well for me). EQ on the UA is treble noon, mids all the way right, bass ~2 o'clock. Left channel has gain around ~8 o'clock, right has gain at noon. Some simple compression in Audacity just to balance it out. Ignore the bridge, it's not finalized and it has a Carbon Copy and a CE-2W going for fun.

I like it both ways, and it's still kind of a subtle difference, but I think I might end up swapping to a lower gain tube. I feel like I'm hitting grit more easily than I expected, and it'd be nice to get more tube-iness before that. I think this is an active bass thing though, as it stays cleaner with my passive guitar.

I have and love both. I briefly considered selling 1 because I didn't have space on a 2nd board for another large format box.....but I fixed that problem
It's almost impossible to do a comprehensive demo of these......depending on the gain staging & bass there is an enormous variety of sounds available in both, as well as a lot of potential overlap. Both will give you 2 channels with separate eq and depending on the tubes you fill 'em with, any of their 4 channels can be run very clean right through purt durn filthy. The most significant feature difference is the Fender tone stack on the DC vs the HiWatt stack on the Detective. Best to look at the on line tone stack simulator which has been linked many times in this thread and play around with it. That said, if you want to have 2 tube flavours available in 1 box, either will be delicious, pretty much regardless of your taste, as long as you take sufficient time to get to know the pedal in order to optimally milk it for your aural pleasure. Also, just to further complicate matters, a lot depends on what (if any) other pedals you'll put in series with these. For example, I also have a JC Emerald. It's great, especially for overdriven sounds, and has a very nice high/mid/high end.........but after having it around for a while one day I paired it with my SA Zio pedal and the 2 of 'em complement each other perfectly and together sound amazing....even better than either one does alone or in any other combo I tried.....it was a sonic lightbulb moment. It's a lot like experimenting with spices in the kitchen, or ingredients behind the bar. You won't go wrong with either, and your best friend is the time it'll take to really get to know whichever you choose.On an unrelated note, the youtube demo of the JC Emerald is crappy and IMHO should by "unlinked" from the S-Box site. I knew you’d end up with an Elementart/Dr Watson/Detective sooner or later, but the JC Emerald surprised me.
How dirty does it get? Are we talking classic OD (like a driven amp), or Justin Chancellor/Tool modern distortion?
