...but I thought that was kinda' the point of the VLE... that doesn't get it done for you??

No, you are right, it does help considerably, and truthfully when you are playing through it you don't really notice the hiss. I just kinda like the idea of having both sets of tools to use, especially as I can't be sure which frequencies the VLE will effect compared to attenuating the tweeter, if that makes sense.

Truth is, I think the combo is completely usable, and with the kick back design is also pretty convenient.

Well, at least for me, I prefer the VLE over the attenuator on the cab. That way, the cab is just representing what I give it with no additional filtering or attenuation. Also, it's easier than reaching around the back of my rig, so I can change it easily during a gig if I want. :)

Either way, I'm sure it's not a big diff, but FWIW anyhoo...

That's not quite correct. It's a classic 'enhance' type control that cuts mids with a moderate Q centered around 380, but boosts lows and highs at the same time. So, it does a LOT more than just cut 380, and at even moderate levels, it not only cuts a lot of mids, but then simultaneously increased the lows and highs... resulting in the dreaded smiley face EQ.

This control can sound quite nice at a setting under 9 o'clock with certain cabs and basses and in certain rooms, but in general, can do a more bad than good. It should be used with caution!

You're right, but the diagram shown figures VPF when used fully. Anyway I use it with parsimony (somewhere between 8 a 9 o'clock), and I give a big boost at 250 Hz with my bass.

Tried this today on rehearsal with the band, and I was always cutting thru pretty well (even too much sometimes).

+1... just adding a touch of that... maybe 8 o'clock, really sounds good!

Yeah i've noticed the lower end of the VLE adds a nice woody bark to the tone. Anything more than 10'oclock gets pretty muffled.

What was cool was soloing my neck pickup and running 3 o'clock VLE with the tone control down. All I needed was some foam and that motown thing was covered.

My problem with the combo is that the tweeter lacks an attenuator. I may have to wire one up myself. Right now since I am not playing much and I am fighting the choice between getting the combo for $900 (I have a 10% coupon at GC) or having $1300 invested in my EA NL210 and a Little Mark II. I will be moving soon and its matter of allocating my assets properly.

Tweeter attenuator = VLE.

Was going to start a new thread about this but i thought this one was apropriate.

I have the yellow Little Mark I. Does anyone know what the sound difference is between the two? I find the LMI lacks a bit of warmth....but that could be becasue i have very hot SD1/4 pounders in my P bass. I am think of replacing the LMI with a Mark Bass HT-503 (discontinued in 2005) mainly for the valve pre amp and more functions. WOuld this be an ok move?

 I'll tell you "why not", Jmain - because it makes me wish that I had a pair of UL112's, too! That's "WHY NOT"!!!!

;)

:D Seriously, that's a great looking rig that you've got there, my friend! I'm sure that it sounds at least twice as good as it looks

Enjoy !

(Hey, just noticed - my "smilies" look like a traffic signal :D . OK, back to my colouring books now .... :scowl: ).

ROFL +1 they do.

Correct me if I'm wrong, Bass Dogs, but isn't the LMI without a VLE control? Most people seem to have found that that knob will tame almost any kind of bass :hmm: .

As for the HT-503, I haven't played through that one either, but it looks to be a very capable amp. Much like the modern TA-503, but (again) seems to be lacking the versatile VLE control :hmm: .

If you're being offered a good deal on one, I'd say "go for it", although I think that one of the current range might suit your needs a little better.

Also, glad to see that Markbass seem to be getting reasonable distribution in Oz! Many of our "State-side" cousins appear to be having less good frtune :( !

yes, we have good distribution of markbass now. They are getting very popular here. The LM1 does have the VLE knob but not the VLP knob.

The reason why i am looking into an amp with pre amp valve is that i am looking for more warmth. I am getting a sound that sounds as if there is to much gain. The sound is slightly distorted like an overdrive sound. I want a smoother warmer sound. I play with a 1985 Jpanese Fender P bass and SWR Goliath III quad. The SD pick ups sound to hot for my rigs......i wonder if changing the amp may help...??:hmm: .....i should try a compressor instead??

Well, instead of eternally debating what I should do, I hauled my NL210 down to GC and compared the LMKII/NL210 combo to the 102p combo. Overall the combo sounds pretty good, and most people would/could be very happy with it (including myself). However, while volume wise the NL210 and the combo were almost identical, the low end and clarity of the NL210 is much nicer too me.

Now is it $400 nicer? (New 102p combo being $1000 vs. LMKII/NL210 at $1400 new) Probably not for most people, but it was nicer enough to me that it outweighed the financial benefits and the hassle involved with selling the NL210.

I personally don't use the VLE at all, since I'm involved into modern yet punchy tone (listen to Tye Zamora with Alien Ant Farm, and you will get a vague idea of what tone category I'm into).

BUT I made a stunning discovery : I keep my settings as they are, but only change two details : I roll off some treble from the bass and tweak the VLE to 12 o'clock, and I'm instantaneously into vintage tone (kinda ala Pino Palladino with John Mayer Trio). Very impressive, though that was just a test for fun and I don't need that kind of tone (at least at these times).

So I just discovered that I kinda virtually saved much money, since I probably wouldn't need to get a P and and Ampeg if I were involved into vintage project later.

The global investment (Tobias + Markbass rig) was around 3,800 euros, but it looks like the very best investment of my music life.

Nice setup ! The 102P is not the best cab ever for low end (for many reasons, the main one being probably the conception of the box). That's why it is coupled with a Traveler 151P and I have tons of low end with no headache.

Anyway, though some 210 cabs are truly amazing, I think none of them can deliver optimal low end as standalone. Just IMO, of course.
