The "Tone wood" Bass!

I'm with Stu here.. enough bickering about wood tone! We want pics!!

of course, on the tonewood subject..

anyone see the First Act guitar made out of bambo? Apparently bambo is the most renewable resorce on the planet (according to the First Act press release). Interesting idea.

Bambo.... Jeez, from where I live I would thought the most renewable wood source was pine.

They're everywhere..

It's the same arround here.. Pine is EVERYWHERE! I got 2 huge pine trees in my yard that I'm dying to get rid of. I HATE raking pine needles!!

Thanks fine, and I'm sure it sounds decent... but it looks like the floor in my doctor's office (the bamboo one, I mean... ScottyD's instrument is gonna look great!). LOL

I may actually have to try making a bamboo instrument, sometime... looks like it could be interesting.

OK OK no more bickering on my part! My point was made way back in post #1 and I'll stand behind that.

I'm still waiting on parts to make more progress. I'm also still trying to find a nice oak top. Hopefully one with some nice oaky figure.

Thats pretty nice! I'm was leaning towards burl, but that is really nice.

Well, I am of the opinion that nothing sounds as good as ash and there is no ash that is equal to my ash............................jk.

You might consider sassafras for a top. Very beautiful and quite similar to oak/ash in grain.

People send an extra $85+ on swamp ash because they are uninformed, which is one of the points of this build. A wood will react different on account of its hardness, stiffness, or density not because it was grown in Canada Africa or the swamp

I would like to point out again,that I built a 3-string bass with a:
northern ash neck(bolt-on)
black walnut fingerboard
catalpa body
I am currently building a 4-string with a:
cherry neck through
black walnut fingerboard
aspen body
I'm on your side here,but I think I would make sure it was going to work out alright before starting a thread about it,don't set yourself up for a "I told you so"from some "tone wood nazi" (you never know it could be from me I'm part German)

I am a tone wood kind of guy but I agree it only has very subtle changes on the tone of a solidbody instrument. IME the more you use lightweight hardware and low output electronics the more effect the wood will have on the tone.

Really none of my basses or guitars I build have preselected electronics tho. I do the full build and route out everything but the pickup cavities. I then listen to the acoustic tone with a few different sets of strings and decide what electronics combination would best accentuate the tone of that bass/guitar. Every piece of wood is different.

The only thing I'd personally worry about using unconventional wood combinations is unforeseen dead spots.

I can't wait to hear it .
