the TRACE ELLIOT thread: Part II

Can anyone help identify this and give some feedback on it ? All I was told was that it was 400 watts, and is approx 15 years old.

Afaik the cabs that Gibson produced were fine. Trace never made their own drivers, how hard is it to build a cabinet?

Things went downhill in the quality control of the amp production a bit and they stopped innovating. Also afaik, not writing the history here.

As I said on your other thread I don't think it's a Gibson cab anyway, no port tubes through the grill. Red race stripes came and went and came back under Gibson briefly.

Pardon this diversion from the current train of thought...

I'm looking at 2 older TE 1048s, and wonder what the opinion is on which is "better", or maybe just what the difference is between them, if notable.

There's the one with the tune-able ports that came along with the GP7SM and GP12SMX series', and there's the earlier Series 6 (I believe) with the slot that ran across the middle of the cab, horizontally, between the top and bottom rows of speakers. These are deeper I think, but not as tall- so I surmise that the internal volume maybe isn't so different.

Anyone got the scoop on these?

I'll be using one of them with an AH350SMX. Thanks for your time.

I got myself a nice AH1000-12 a while back. Sounds good, especially to my fretless Lakie. The full stereo signal path is nice when using stereo effects. My two custom made TKS cabs (2x12" and 1x6" per cab) make a good match to this amp.

Hey folks, I've got an old Trace Elliot 1048 (90s) cab that I've just re-hab'd- it looked as if it had been mistakenly given over to the Samsonite Gorilla during a promo shoot, and is much better now. HOwever I need some new drivers for it, and am having difficulty finding a source. Anyone have a clue here?

Thanks for your time.

Unfortunately, they don't make them anymore. Your best bet would be to contact British Audio Service. They had 1 new old stock (NOS) that I bought a few months back for my 90's TE 4x10.

If you want 3 used & 1 new, I might be willing to sell you the speakers out of mine. I haven't used a real cab on stage in almost a year.

Well I might just talk to you about that... thanks korngold!

Here's the 1048 cab with a short photo essay of the rehab...

Got a grille on it now- not the original, I had a nice scrap of expanded metal, improvised some padded spacers out of some neoprene foam pads and made up a washer/screw arrangement. Looks borderline industrial now, but it's tight and a flying beer bottle won't go through a cone. :)

Note: Seems a couple orphan photos got stuck into this selection- a 215 cab and another, much nicer than mine, bass rig. Ay. Got spam'd with someone else's gear porn I guess!
