the TRACE ELLIOT thread: Part II

I bought this rig this weekend from someone who had it in his living room since new. Never gigged. The amp is an AH250SMX and its insanely modestly rated power wise. I cant believe how much juice it seems to have. The cabs are really great sounding although the grills rattle at higher volume. I love how punchy and "organic" this rig sounds to my ears. I love how the cabs can stack vertically and even the head locks into the little cups that hold the rubber feet. Great design! These cabs are heavy but they fit side by side in the trunk of my hatchback and even the handles are positioned so you can pick up the cabs vertically!

I owned the SMX pre amp back in the early 90's and paired it with a big QSC power amp. It was a killer rig but insanely heavy. I also had a 210 combo with the same amp that I remember fondly. Its fun to have some Trace gear again. I couldn't stop playing through this rig all day.

Congrats on that rig.

Regarding the bolded part, I have an AH250SMX, and I'm with you on the power. I can't figure out what some of these guys do with the power of its bigger brothers unless they have more speaker outs.

Thanks guys. I am really impressed so far with how good this rig sounds. I don't normally like mixing cabs but these two seem to work together really well. The vertical array sure makes a difference as the drivers are closer to my ears when playing.

There is a bit of a hum coming from the amp through both cabs. Not sure what that could be. Dont notice it when playing but its there all the time. Anyone have any experience with that?

General ground issue I bet. Ask your doctor...

They seem properly attached. i really only noticed it on the 115. When I pushed on the grill with my foot when playing it stopped rattling. Might just need a rubber grommet or two put into place.

Same head here too. Someone measured one with all the gear. It is rated truthfully, I don't recall the numbers but slim to none distortion at 250w, not unmusical 500w . I wonder how Trace's fortunes might have been different if they called them 500w.

The port tube glue has let go of the cab on my 1518, no rattling touch wood.

Team Trace Elliot suffers from the mod not being able to spell. Search team trace to join up.

Just wondering, any of my fellow ah1200 owners ever ran yours to its full potential? By this I mean ran enough cabs actually be down to 2 ohms on each Channel (i.e 4 8 x 10's). I know it's supposed to be capable of doing it, but for me it would be impossible to acquire enough cabs to try, but just to experience that sheer volume just once would be something!
