the TRACE ELLIOT thread

Hi all. A little late to this thread but here goes. I started using Trace gear
in the mid 80's. It was the only thing I could find that could handle the lowest register of my 5 & 6 string basses and Chapman stick. The stock Trace bass cabs couldn't do the lowest notes like I wanted so the guy at the store turned me onto an EPAS cab they had just got in. It's an 1818X with a bullet tweeter added. Driving that with an AH350 was amazing.
Really, really heavy, but amazing. At the same time my drummer grabbed the EPAS 400 stereo head, thinking he was going into electronic drums (this was the 80's). He never did and the amp was put in the basement. I sold the cab, yeah I'm an idiot. The AH350 was lost in a fire.
20ish years later ....
I've gone to using a GP11 Mk.V with all the mods I could think of done to it. That drives a Bryston 4B into either/and/or an Acme Low B2 & 15 Bag End. My drummer buddy is moving North, calls me and tells me he has some stuff for me. A quick drive and there he is with the EPAS head and a pair of Klipsch KP-301 speakers. Puts 'em in my van and says keep 'em! The EPAS is new. Never even plugged in. Still in the box!
Yeah, it sounds killer.
Maybe one day soon I'll figure out how to post pics :hmm:

Thats an interesting looking amp. I've never seen on of those before.

I see you use Bag End cabs. just got 2 Bag End s15's that I'm running with my Trace Ah250 gp7sm...what a killer combination!

EPAS stands for: Electronic Percussion Amplification System. 200W/ch in to 8 Ohms. AFAIK, they made very, very few of these. Just bass & treb. sliders. 2 speed fan and the ultra cool black light.
The Bag End + Trace combo is hard to beat. An AH350 & old B.E. 15 was may main rig for years. Blew the speaker a long time ago and installed a TAD 1601B in it's place. The sound is ultra clear, but not harsh.
A 250 and 2 15's should be a BIG sound!

I see you mentioned the Ashdown MK500 in your post. Before I bought my Ashdown gear I was hunting down Trace Elliot stuff, but went Ashdown becasue th eprice was unbeleivable.
Well, my MAG 300H head decided to send out smoke signals.
So the retailer took it back and instead of taking a replacement I ordered the MK500. I will be arriving on Sept 1. Do you know anyone that has used it?? If it is similar to Trace Elliot I will be happy.
Any comments?

I've always loved Trace gear. Back when I lived in Omaha there was a pawn shop which had a music store attached to it. This music store was basically a new/used amp store with a handful of drum gear and a wall of beat up used guitars to make it not look like an amp store. Most of their stuff was TE and a little bit of Eden, back when Eden was first coming out. I didn't play bass back then but I'd go with my bass player friends and there was usually one or two of the seriously good local players in, trying to justify a gear purchase. Good times.

I used to have the GP12SMX preamp but sold it because the output wasn't great enough for my power amp. I wish I had kept it, it was a great studio pre. Now I've got my eyes out for a AH350SMX or AH600SMX, ideally the rack versions. I'd like to try the V4/6/8 but I've never seen one for a sane price.

I am pretty keen to try out the Ashdown Mark King head. Rumor has it that it's similar, but the company who makes it hasn't been assimilated by the Gibson Borg Collective.

Well tom, to be honest I haven't played much with the VA400. I plan on doing it shortly though. I've compared it to my V6 a little and they seem to be very similar beasts (though I like the simplicity of the V6 preamp a little better).

Since I've fallen so hard for this V6 and TE in general, I decided to have some siblings made for it in the Trace Elliot style. This stems from my love of the Trace + Schroeder sound, however my fashion sense couldn't take the two carpet colors.

I present my new Schroeder/Trace/Troeder? 4x10s. V6 be rockin the 8 10s. These should be arriving soon, and there will be more pics to come including some porn shots with the V6 on top (these were taken by Jorg).

I can't wait to play a show with this setup.
I'm OFFICIALLY jealous!

Those are going to look as good as they ROCK! :bassist:

I was gunna wait to tell you guys, but I can't ;)

My 280W GP12SMX head arrived today. Sound is amazing. Needs a wee clean inside tho before I crank 'er. This sounds far better than my other head! Gunna buy a coupla JJ's - one for each head - if my other one can be fixed (back in a different techs office now...).

...More to come tho, but i'm not telling! :ninja:
