the TRACE ELLIOT thread

here are pics of my new (used) combo the sound is awesome. It is a sound I have been seeking, it does not hav carpet covering, but a weird, rugged rubber material, the back says made in england. My only quest is can I put another cab on it, if so how? since there is only one output on the cab. anyone know how old this is and how long it may last me? Also how do you replace trace corners? Sorry for all the questions this thing does it for me, even though it is a little beat up the thing purs.

truckin88 I'm not sure if you still have it but I also have one of those GP7SM130 combo's with the 15" speaker Awesome amps but I still can't answer any of your questions. :D

Hmmm, dating the Trace might be difficult, but as it has the vinyl type covering ,it is probably over 5 or 6 years old......however it does look as if it might be post Gibson takeover....so maybe 8 years old max???? I honestly don't know!


How long will it last you - well, possibly for ever if you look after it reasonably well! They were built to last!

Looking at the back panel, I'd say you can't pout another cab on it. They;ve made th einternal speaker 4 ohms so that you get the full 130 watts out of it on it's own. As you can see it's a standard back panel with two potential outputs, but they seem to have blanked one off!

All you coulod do is use the output into a cab or cab combination that has a 4 ohm impedance ,and then you'd still only get the 130 watts it can put inot it's own internal speaker anyway!


Hmmm, corner protectors....if memory serves they are riveted on, and not readily replacable!

ahh actually I can answer one question!

regarding the connecting extra speakers, I think as long as the extention Cab is 4 Ohms, you can create a Box that will connect the Combo Speaker and Extention Cab and split the signal from the one 4 Ohm Output from the Amp, now I looked into this and set mine up to drive a 2x15" cab as well as the internal 15" speaker (3 x 15" speakers - *dribbles* :bassist: ) now you will need another 4 Ohm Cab, this splitter box can be wired either in series or parralell, now off the top of my head I can't remember which will do what, but one will allow you to connect the 2 4Ohm Speakers to the same output, and the other will try to run both speakers at 2 Ohms, so it is very important you wire the box correctly!!!

I am sure if you don't feel comfortable doing this yourself and wanted to throw some money at it your local techies will be able to knock something up for you.

I'd say that was early to mid 1990s. I think the GP7SM and the GP12SM preamp predated the SMX series. What's the serial number?

OK, your combo is pre-Gibson and most likely pre-Kaman even. Best guess, I would say its no newer than a '93 or '94 since it doesn't have the rat fur. You can pull the amp section out and look at the date codes on the internals and it should be within one year of those dates.

The built in speaker should be 4 ohms like Johnny mentioned. You can add an external cab but you would have to leave the internal unplugged. Unless, ofcourse, you want do what Kraken has suggested or you wish to swap the driver out for an 8 ohm version. BTW, (now pay attention Johnny! ;) ) British Audio Service can hook you up with an 8 ohm driver or any parts/service/info you need.

great news!yesterday my newly acquired trace mp11 arrived at my home....after years of waiting i can finally screw it in my rack...yeah!!!another one...after my gp12smx preamp...
only one thing...
it seems that the led bar at the left,who monitors your direct sound level in various preamp points,goes on only when your gain is at clipping point...
i believe it's only some bad regulation(i opened it and there are some trimmers...)...
there's someone here that has the complete schematics for the mp11 preamp?
maybe with the test points and all the voltages...something like that....
so i could take the baby to my tech friends and check the thing out...
i really hope someone has it...maybe kelly lee :):)

The V8 and V6 preamps sections are different. The V8 is the more recent of the two, and has a second distorted channel. And is regarded as the "holy grail" of bass tube tone. Also, cosmetics are different on both. However, the V6 is a superb head not too far behind the V8 on the totem pole.
