Do you mean that specific, autographed, Live 8 cabinet?

I wonder if that was before, or after I saw it (before, I would imagine).

I was offered the cab and the matching amp head, both in excellent condition (other than the graffiti) for a something like £250 for the whole rig.

Stupid in hindsight, but I definitely would have snatched it up, had it been a V4 / V6 / V8, rather than the hybrid - which are still great.

God, I hate to even write this, but I'm thinking about selling my V6. I love it, it's the best sounding amp I've ever owned, but I just never play places that require that level of sonic heft. I have an Ampeg V4b that never gets turned up above 3 and I have this behemoth of a bass amp that is just sitting in storage, never getting used. The only thing is it would be a huge nightmare to ship, right? Anybody ever ship an amp like this if I were to put on Reverb or something? I'd have to buy a road case just to ship the thing.

It was on eBay for quite some time. For £250 I’d have taken it!

Really sad! Although I have to agree and it makes me happy I never had the cash for a V6 last time I saw one. I was offered a SVT2 many moons ago but was going to need some TLC. £200 for the amp. Would’ve been £400 in tech and tubes. Such an awesome amp but just no need for that kind of power!

I think I've asked you this before, did your V6 come stock with the chrome knobs?

My V6 has the same chrome knobs as my V8. I am not the original owner, so I don't know if it came that way from the factory. Most of the series I amps have the black knobs. Maybe @disssa knows if Trace switched over to chrome knobs late in production, or perhaps it was a common mod after the series II V-Types came out.

A V6 definitely has a different tone than the Ampeg V4B. I would keep it just for variety...and if you have gigs, there is no reason to not use it IMHO. My V6 sounds great loud and it sounds great at low volume.

I'm kind of in a getting rid of posessions state of mind lately. On a technical note, I guess one thing is that I have found that it sounds best through my 2x15 cabinet, and that is really one of the big reasons it doesn't get used as much. Amy of you using yours with a 1x15 cabinet that you particularly like?

I know that technically it's OK to use an 8 ohm cab, but the output transformer works a lot harder, right? I don't want to burn out the OT on such an expensive amp. BTW, what is the 2 ohm switch on the back of the amp for? What combination of cabs is that for? I've only got 35 years of using tube amps behind me, I can't be expected to understand ohms at this stage of the game.

The V6 has two output taps on the transformer. The switch allows you to select either 4 ohms or 2 ohms.

With the switch set to 4 ohms you could run one 4 ohm cabs or two 8 ohm cabs. With the switch set to 2 ohms you could run two 4 ohm cabs. For example you could run two Ampeg 810Es.


If you connect two cabs in parallel with the same impedance just divide the impedance by two. For example if you have two 8 ohm cabs (8/2 = 4 ohms).

If you connect two cabs with different impedance in parallel, use this formula where Z is impedance:

for example if you have an 8 ohm cabinet and a 4 ohm cabinet.

Mine is a fur. I really dig the tolex!

My band logo is white/black/red. I've been tempted to rip off the fur and replace it with red tolex, with a white sprayed on logo stencil.

It is possible to replace the voice coil with a 4 ohm voice coil. (Jesse Oliver did that on my B15N when he serviced it some years ago.) With that said, the V6 might be too much for a single 15 anyway.

Should be fine - just a case of finding an appropriate replacement for the cab - I can’t be of anymore help than this, other than it might be difficult if it’s a Trace cab.

Ive never used a v4..just my v6. The ony difference being 2 power tubes id say the same too. My v6 came with the black knobs which i assume are the earliest versions. I need a v6 logo faceplate. Can you guys share where you keep your controls. Gain master and eq? Thx.

EQ is set relatively flat, bass at 12, mids at 1, treble at 12. Adjust bass & mids to suit the room.
Gain at 12/1 and master to suit, generally between 11-1pm.

I do like engaging the deep and bright switches, with the mids at 1/2, but at volume I think my bass delivers too much low end.. a HPF would fix that right up nicely but unsure how it'll sit in a mix.

These are clock face settings.
Gain: 10-1
Bass: 9-11:30
Middle: 2-3
Treble: 8-10

I don't use the Deep switch, but I do use the Mid shift and Bright. Usually engaging the Bright switch is too much for my taste. To my ears, this amp is a bit scooped in the upper mids, but has plenty of Treble.

British Audio Service is currently selling oval V4 and V8 badges, but not V6 badges. They also offer two rectangular Trace Elliot badges that might fit. trace elliot badge | eBay

Other than that, you could probably get a Trophy shop to make one for you, but it would most likely be a bit expensive.

You could call Shane Radtke at British Audio Service. Shane is the shop owner and a vintage TE expert. He might have a used V6 logo laying around. British Audio Service & Music

Thankyou...with the bass and treble on the stingray its almost too much. Do you use the mid control in or out

Forgot to mention, mid stays in. Maybe once or twice I've used it with the bands. I find it too harsh. Good fun in the house though with the preamp cranked. Get a pretty sick Muse-like tone!
