The Trace Elliot V-type Club!!

V-Type + IP310 = :D

my V-type brethren....I just did a recording with my V6 and the engineer kept complaining about a humming in the DI signal, much like my V-type preamp which reminded me why I stopped using it in the studio....I tried the lift/ground switch and the hum was still there....

I remember hearing something about Trace Elliot skimping out on their DIs....but I could be wrong....if so, has anyone replaced theirs or knows of a great sounding replacement?

I can verify that the direct out on my V6 is also substandard. I always use an external Di for live or recording, either a sansamp or EBS microbass 2 before the head or if I am after the heads tone, an Avalon U5 on the speaker output.
It makes sense to me to use a separate di with an all tube head in case something happens. If a tube dies mid performance a di will keep you in the FOH whereas a head might shut down.
Still, it would be good to hear from someone who had modded the heads own DI and achieved good results.
Cheers

An Avalon on the speaker output? I hope you mean line out....
I totally agree with you about the external DI Evan, but for the extreme high quality of this head (and I treat my tubes with the UTMOST care), I don't see why I shouldn't be able to use the built in DI and get a high quality bass recording or signal FOH. Plus, there's no way any of my vintage Fenders or Alleva-Coppolo straight into a DI sound as good as if they were going through the V6 and out of it's DI post EQ. I mean, I could also just use my LMII in the studio but that defeats the whole point of having a monster tube amp!....I'd love to hear anyone's tale of replacing their V-type's DI with positive results!

No, I mean speaker out. The Avalon has a function where it can be connected to the speaker output. A Countryman Type 85 will do it as well for a whole lot cheaper too. That way you get the full sound of the amp through your DI, not just the preamp. You still need to have a speaker connected with an all tube amp. It works fabulously.

wow....that's awesome....and funny cause I've been looking for an excuse to cop a U5 recently....that would be a great option in the studio, and I've recorded direct into a U5 and 737SP and have ALWAYS been more than happy with my sound....but live and on the road, I'd rather not have ANOTHER piece of expensive (or inexpensive) gear to worry about....you know? Does anyone know if I can get a Jensen DI anywhere?

Look into the Countryman Type 85 for live use. It will also run off the speaker output at the flick of a switch and can be bought for a lot less than the U5. It's small, will run off phantom or a 9v and you will get to hear those lovely KT88's in your DI.

It can be bought for a fair bit cheaper than the $238 rrp too.

Hi guys, I'm in a position to answer any questions on the V4 an V8 as I luckily have both!
The V8 is a brute and I use an Ampeg 8x10 to let it speak, the V4 has a creamier tone and I use a Trace 4X10 cab with it for smaller gigs. Both have recently been revalved (not cheap!) Pics to follow when I've uploaded them. Check out Link Removed to see them in action:D

I'm looking for an amp to use as a monitor for our praise band. I wanted to know if this might fit the bill. It has a line out. Anyone know what this might have cost new and if it is in good shape is this a good deal?
