I have one of the V-Type combos with the funky green tolex. It's a beast. Me and my dad made a head case for the amplifier portion and I'm re-tolexing an old TE 1048H to match. I would love an all-tube V-Type but the the combo kills. The DI is amazing as well. I'll have to post some pics another time.

It depends where I play and who I'm playing with.

This summer I used the V6 at an outdoor gig with nominal pa support and that was just the ticket. The bad part was we played on a flat semi and the depth put my rig right next to the now deaf drummer.

The V4 is great for most everything from small rooms on it's own, to large rooms with full pa support.

Now the V8 I could use everywhere with it's half-power switch and I honestly LOVE the compressor and the number 2 gain channel as I can get all the nasty sounds I want.

BTW I run ValveArt KT-88s in the 4 & 8 and I did have my tech replace the xlr speaker-out with speak-ons on all 3 amps.

So which one do I use the most? I honestly don't know, but I probably go with the V4 a bit more due to the weight and the amount of power I need for most gigs and I have yet to need the V8s full power but I am working on it ;)

Has anyone recorded using their V4, V6, or V8 heads? If so, how were the results? Could you post a link to some recordings? They would be great to hear.

I've got 2 weeks left with healing my broken hand, then back to playing again. I'd like to hear recording experiences with the V4, V6, & V8 heads before I most likely record with mine. It's going to be a Steve Vai/Joe Satriani type guitarist solo album.

I'm assuming it would be best to switch the V8 to "Half Power" for recording. Going to get the sweetest, growliest, punchiest bass tone where every note breathes life. :D

I just picked up a V-Type head today :D I thought it was the 300H, but I just checked the model # and it says 5001. What is the difference between the two heads?

I will post pics over the next couple of days.

Hopefully I have just uploaded a couple of pictures of my V8. I'm not sure there were as many made as has been previously mentioned. I'll have to go and have a look at the serial number. I'm fairly sure they were sequentially numbered.

I have just checked the rear of my V8 the serial number reads T0136/12/200. To my mind that indicates that 200 were indeed made and mine is number 12 making the previous post correct. Apologies. Here's some more photos....

has anyone replaced their KT88s with the newer KT120 power tubes? I just found out about these and they claim each pair adds 150 watts with way better heat dissipation resulting in even MORE clean headroom and massive low end. They say it's a direct replacement but then warn to check with your amp manufacturer to make sure it can handle the increase in filament headroom or something like that....anybody with experience? I know verellen amps are using them now in the "Meatsmoke" which is kind of based on an SVT design so I assume it should work but I would die if I messed up my V6!!

I currently have KT120's in my Reeves Custom 225. We were able to measure the response/output with KT88's and then swap to the KT120's (re-bias) and measure again. The measured power output only increased 12%, but the frequency response changed a bit, with more midrange information from the KT120's. The seat of the pants perceived power increase was quite noticeable, though.

The C225 has very beefy transformers, and while it was not designed with KT120's in mind, it does run them quite well (though you may be able to get more power out of them if the rest of the amp - especially the transfo's - were designed around using them. I'm not sure how they would work in a Trace head, but I may give it a try some time. You definitely need to be able to adjust the bias to swap from 88's to 120's.

I think it's a phenomenal tube, but I also think that it will be very amp-dependent as far as whether or not it is an upgrade from KT88's.
