Well, I've made my living at it. I studied at the Manhattan School of Music. I play 9 instruments. Compose, arrange and orchestrate. Have made instructional videos. But maybe you're right.
Hey, you sound like you're young. Here's some perspective. From an old guy.
Back in the 80's I was pulling in over 6 figures just from gigging and session work. How much did YOU make this year playing music this year? I mean, since you know it so well.
Today, the work isn't there. Unless you're the main songwriter in a hit band, chances are you won't be able to pay your rent from playing music. Maybe things will be different for you. Maybe you're so great the world cannot deny your genius. Let us know.
Till then...ssssh.
The fact that you made or make money from your work doesn't mean your opinion or stance is any more credible than mine. I have tracks that I've recorded and never given to anyone other than the other musicians that played on them with me that could possibly make me a millionaire but who cares.
I'm not so sure it's off topic. I think the point I originally tried to make has been (not surprisingly) misconstrued is that the topic isn't really about Gene. It's about basic unimaginative rock and roll that becomes popular. Hell, Spinal Tap was a parody of it and their songs were better than anything most of the bands they were spoofing ever did in real life.
Rock and Roll. It's fine. it's fun. But let's face it, a lot of it is junk.
Now YES -- they are on another level. Something we can all aspire to, but not really expect to match. THAT is music. Art. Greatness. And if you can grab a piece of it playing in a tribute band, I think that's really cool.
However, playing in a KISS tribute band would be really, really lame. (Unless you're under 17 years old).
Rock n Roll to you may not be rock n roll to others. What most people consider rock n roll, I consider to be corporate pop ********. Yes is a great band, glad you enjoy them as much as I. I see the point of your thread and I agree with you 100%. Too many unimaginative bands end up millionaires because they were in the right place at the right time. Combine this with the fact that 98% of the public can't really tell you what is real music and you have a formula for dollar signs.
Where did I bash anyone for liking KISS?
Uh Kiss tribute band?
Outplaying? Sorry bro. I don't see music as a competition. I've posted stuff along the way -- everything from chord melody solo bass to original country songs. But if you're looking for something specific to criticize you can check out my latest CD, DON'T FEAR THE REVERB on Youtube.
Well you were quick to point out that you were once a successful session/gig guy...
Regardless, I wont criticize your surf stuff. I happen to think surf music is gimmicky and sounds ridiculous but if its your passion, live it up.
I happen to think Nickleback has a great voice. I just can't tell one song from the next.
A-****ing-men.
As for the KISS saga, I will share my story about Kiss. This past Halloween the guitarist in my band suggested that we throw a large house party/kegger/show/whatever at his house. Being Halloween he wanted us to play an entire Kiss set- in full makeup, costumes and all.
I never listened to Kiss other than the popular stuff that everyone knows. I always thought their music was easy and cheesy. After spending a few weeks learning all the tunes in the set I started to find a few songs that were pretty timeless and rockin. Deuce and Black Diamond being two of them.
The day of the show our costumes arrived. Let me tell you something. Its easy for many of us on here to sit or stand around and play the bassline to Deuce, but try it in 8" platform heels with a cape and spiked gloves on. I could barely walk 10ft without fear of breaking my neck. I gained a new respect for Kiss after than 45 minute set.
