The Truth About Gene Simmons

I love a good show. Can't agree more that part of the enjoyment of a live show is the showmanship.

I've got tickets to "Here Come the Mummies" on Feb 11th. If you've not seen these guys, they are MAJORLY good musicians, but put on a fantastic show.

While I entirely agree with most of THand's post here, I somewhat disagree with the quoted bit. It seems that one could argue that KISS IS happening again, in the person of Lady Gaga. They both have an amazing talent for showmanship and marketing, a keen sense of what the audience wants, catchy hooks, minimal musical skill, good pop songwriting, and a gimmick.

I honestly don't know enough about her to debate that one with you. I have seen 2 video's on YouTube of her and that's it. One was way before she was LG and was playing piano and singing at a bar. I thought she was pretty talented.

Lady GuGu is talented and cashing in on it like a sumbi+ch, God bless her.

I like Kings of Leon and think they are a good popular rock band. While that fact may seem ridiculous to some, it remains my opinion.

I agree with the poster about Geddy Lee. Awesome talent but his voice makes me wanna KMS.

Now Nickelback and KISS I think are a very good comparison musically. Maybe Nickelback should get some makeup?

Well, I've made my living at it. I studied at the Manhattan School of Music. I play 9 instruments. Compose, arrange and orchestrate. Have made instructional videos. But maybe you're right.

Hey, you sound like you're young. Here's some perspective. From an old guy.

Back in the 80's I was pulling in over 6 figures just from gigging and session work. How much did YOU make this year playing music this year? I mean, since you know it so well.

Today, the work isn't there. Unless you're the main songwriter in a hit band, chances are you won't be able to pay your rent from playing music. Maybe things will be different for you. Maybe you're so great the world cannot deny your genius. Let us know.

Till then...ssssh.
The fact that you made or make money from your work doesn't mean your opinion or stance is any more credible than mine. I have tracks that I've recorded and never given to anyone other than the other musicians that played on them with me that could possibly make me a millionaire but who cares.

I'm not so sure it's off topic. I think the point I originally tried to make has been (not surprisingly) misconstrued is that the topic isn't really about Gene. It's about basic unimaginative rock and roll that becomes popular. Hell, Spinal Tap was a parody of it and their songs were better than anything most of the bands they were spoofing ever did in real life.

Rock and Roll. It's fine. it's fun. But let's face it, a lot of it is junk.

Now YES -- they are on another level. Something we can all aspire to, but not really expect to match. THAT is music. Art. Greatness. And if you can grab a piece of it playing in a tribute band, I think that's really cool.

However, playing in a KISS tribute band would be really, really lame. (Unless you're under 17 years old).

Rock n Roll to you may not be rock n roll to others. What most people consider rock n roll, I consider to be corporate pop ********. Yes is a great band, glad you enjoy them as much as I. I see the point of your thread and I agree with you 100%. Too many unimaginative bands end up millionaires because they were in the right place at the right time. Combine this with the fact that 98% of the public can't really tell you what is real music and you have a formula for dollar signs.

Where did I bash anyone for liking KISS?
Uh Kiss tribute band?

Outplaying? Sorry bro. I don't see music as a competition. I've posted stuff along the way -- everything from chord melody solo bass to original country songs. But if you're looking for something specific to criticize you can check out my latest CD, DON'T FEAR THE REVERB on Youtube.
Well you were quick to point out that you were once a successful session/gig guy...

Regardless, I wont criticize your surf stuff. I happen to think surf music is gimmicky and sounds ridiculous but if its your passion, live it up.

I happen to think Nickleback has a great voice. I just can't tell one song from the next.
A-****ing-men.

As for the KISS saga, I will share my story about Kiss. This past Halloween the guitarist in my band suggested that we throw a large house party/kegger/show/whatever at his house. Being Halloween he wanted us to play an entire Kiss set- in full makeup, costumes and all.

I never listened to Kiss other than the popular stuff that everyone knows. I always thought their music was easy and cheesy. After spending a few weeks learning all the tunes in the set I started to find a few songs that were pretty timeless and rockin. Deuce and Black Diamond being two of them.

The day of the show our costumes arrived. Let me tell you something. Its easy for many of us on here to sit or stand around and play the bassline to Deuce, but try it in 8" platform heels with a cape and spiked gloves on. I could barely walk 10ft without fear of breaking my neck. I gained a new respect for Kiss after than 45 minute set.

Writing a rock and roll song is relatively easy....A million guys can do it...

But can a million guys do it and make money? Look, you talk about "getting lucky", but let's face it, luck is only one very small part of the equation.

Here's how Kiss made it big. They had some good, catchy rock and roll songs, developed an amazing live show and then worked their asses off to get out there and promote their band. When all that dedication paid off and they got their big break, they worked even harder to take it to the next level, over and over again. Kiss went on to become one of the biggest rock bands of all time, who have managed to sustain a loyal following for almost 40 years and have sold more than 100 MILLION albums. Lucky? I don't think so!

Besides the music, one thing these guys figured out early, was that it's all about entertainment. Your'e up on that stage to ENTERTAIN your audience. These guys realized that and become larger than life rock stars in every sense of the word. Heck, in 8th grade my entire bedroom was covered in Kiss posters from floor to ceiling. Come on now... you may not think much of their music, but these guys deserve a lot of credit for what they did accomplish.

How many young kids picked up a bass for the very first time because they wanted to be just like Gene Simmons? Thousands? Ten of thousands? We should all be so "lucky".

The amount of disrespect in this thread (from the OP and others) is unparalleled by almost any thread I've seen here on Talkbass thus far. Just because you didn't implicity say something doesn't mean it's not there. Whether or not you intended something to be inflammatory, a lot of it is ending up that way. This is to a lot of people in this thread.

Anyways, let me just say this: KISS, in the modern age, is represented as party rock (from what I see). It's a lot of feel good straightforward music from them that gets played. But they did that well. They entertained. They had costumes, and gene had an awesome bass. It's quite possible they had connections. They also had a comic book series, action figures, etc. They marketed. Anybody arguing anything about "good" is just arguing an impossible point. It's all relevant. Who's to say that "simple" lines aren't more musical because they don't implement a lot of theory?

So many people rule musicians out because they don't shred all over the place. Gene approaches bass in a traditional role. He has experience and I dig his basslines. I think rock n roll should be simple. Good ol rock n roll like Chuck Berry and The Kinks are fun to play along with. I miss it. Music in my opinion is so diluted nowadays. Then again maybe I say that because my skills are rudimentary. That doesn't mean I don't enjoy Hendrix or Robert Johnson. A lot of people rule Hendrix out which is ridiculous. Hendrix was amazing. Intense. Emotional.

who really cares what any of you bean shooters think about anything. It seems to me you are all a pack of keyboard tough guys. If any of you were face to face with each other you wouldn't say a word in fear of getting floored. You don't like gene simmons. Well I don't like wise a***s getting fresh without fear of me putting my boot up your #%*. Now all of you little girls can sport your "web muscles". TB will probally ban me for this rap. I don't care. I dont need this useless info cite anyway.

Some of you guys are just jealous. Gene Simmons is a very smart guy who understands his audience, executes very well in giving them what they want, and gets paid handsomely for it. It's the formula for success in any business; Simmons just chose music as his.

To not like Simmons or Kiss is legitimate. To argue that they are not a hugely successful venture is misled.
