Okay guys, think I've got the specs of my next Valenti P/J-5 nailed down. What do you think?
- Valenti VTP5
- 35” scale
- Swamp Ash Body
- Maple neck
- 21 fret Rosewood fretboard
- Passive
- Hipshot Aluminum “A” style bridge
- Nordstrand NPJ5S pickups
- Mint green pickguard
- 19mm spacing
- Surf Green finish with matching headstock
I am an "active" and "34"" guy, but besides that, I think it would be killer. Surf green MUST have a matching headstock IMO!

I can understand. I was an active guy for a very long time. But I have slowly been gravitating back to the passive sound. To my ear, the notes "breathe" more out of a passive bass (if that makes sense). My last two P style basses have been passive (my Valenti VTP5 '55 style and my Fender Vintage "63). I love the raw, organic tone I get from them.

Alright guys, I'm going to make an adjustment to my Green Valenti PJ #168. After getting the new purple bass (#187) I have decided I'd prefer to have 2 JJ basses. It will work out great because the purple bass is alder/rosewood and the green bass is ash/maple with 70s bridge pu placement. The question is, should I stoss the same electronics in it as the purple bass (Nj4s and Nordy 2 band) or venture out into a more 70s pu set like Aggie 70s wind with a Sadowsky pre?
I have basically decided I'm selling all my other basses that are not of significant sentimental value and making my whole players collection Valentis. If it all works out I will have #168, #187, (hopefully) #137 and the new 5 string I have on order...

Do you really love the way your current bass sounds?
Enough so that different body woods being the only variable would make you happy? Then: load it the same.
Or, do you want something different from that? Then: load it with the other stuff you mentioned. Nord make a 70's wind too, fwiw.

Yeah, I love it. That nordy pre is pure magic to my ears, bit its not the only pre I like. I'd kinda like them to be tonally different enough that I could tell them apart in a mix... But that might be asking too much haha.

Well; same pickups different pre might do that. I think the Sadowsky sounds "more active." In a good way and all, but, none-the-less....
Yeah, that sadowsky circuit is very recognizable. I think the big mistake I made with the green bass was I didn't anticipate the overbearing mids of a p+ash/maple+aguilar preamp. It was wayyyy overkill
For what it's worth, Cien (#100) is a Sadowsky pre/Nordy 70's wind in 70's placement and is easily the best sounding bass I've ever owned/heard. Mine is the early '70's recipe (alder/maple)... Perfect combo of punch and grind.
Can't go wrong with the Sadowsky/Nordy combo if you're looking for 70's style aggressive IMO. It's just right!

My Valenti now has Aguilar 70's wind J pickups in the 70's position with a Sadowsky preamp. KILLER sound. IMHO, these pickups blow away the Nordstrands I used to have.
Two questions: were the Nordstrands the 70's winds? In what way do they "blow them away?" I.e. tone comparison a la bass/mid/treble response, presence, clarity, mix cutability (just made that word up). I've been away from the game for a while and am unfamiliar with Aguilar pickups.

BassNYC1 is comparing 2 different sets of pickups. His bass originally had a set of Nordstrand NPJ5S PJ pickups (hum cancelling) and I swapped them for Aggie 70's wound J's (Single Coil).
I think Chef had mentioned that the magic of the PJ is a little lost with an active preamp setup or something like that. I think he is totally right, the active p bass pickup is just so midrangy and harsh sounding. Looks like I'm sending this back to Nino to get it re routed for a straight JJ setup. I have a set of Aggie 70s wind pickups in a crappy fretless that I could use, but I really dig the Nordstrand stuff more, especially the preamps.
