I'm #1 and #2

Nino built me this 'Geddy Vee'

I can honestly say that that is one of the most beautiful basses I have ever seen, I would want a 4 string, however. Someday, I tell myself solemnly... Someday... :bawl: :( :bawl:

Keep your eyes on the classifieds. It seems to come up for sale every so often. Same with the silver PJ that was the inspiration for this thread. As for mine? I'm keeping it.

Mike, dude. Those pictures look great, as does the bass!

Thanks Will!!!

I just hope I play it as good as it looks and sounds! (I wish the pics were a little more clear. (They're video captures from a DVD, and my software sucks for doing it)

I gotta say, Nino does some AMAZING work.
To anyone who is hesitant to "pulling the trigger", take it from me, I've owned some of the best out there, including a bunch from his former boss, and I'll place mine right up there.

BTW, the Nordstrand MM 5.4 (which is in my bass) and the Sadowsky pre-amp catches the "old school" MM sound something crazy.
And to have a passive tone control on a MM.....WHEW!!!

Something for you guys who are thinking of going the MM only pick-up to consider.

BTW, I WILL get another some day.
Some day!!!

former?

I was wondering about that. Do you play it with the MM pickup soloed, a la Stingray, much?

Nino is 100% in business for himself now!

I've had the pleasure of playing this bass, and the even greater pleasure of hearing it out front with Mike playing it. It's nice, and man does it cop the MM vibe beautifully. For those who always loved the MM vibe, but found their 5 string version bridge spacing too tight... this is the total bomb.

The J tone is good, but not totally authentic (due to pickup placement, etc.), but in a mix, it surely is close enough. This is a very versatile bass, and cops the MM vibe MUCH better than, for example, the Lakland 55-94.

Pretty cool instrument!

Well, Nino - congratulations and best luck. I suspect you have enough demand to keep your head above water. Send anyone my way for a reference if needed!

Thanks, Ken. My Valenti is purposefully a Sadowsky clone, but I was _very_ tempted to do a MM pickup in the bridge position. Maybe that will be the next one. I bet it would make a nice sounding fretless, too.

What Ken said!
:D

A Lakland 55-94, while sweet as hell, places the MM pick-up about 1/2" to 3/4" closer to the bridge. That way when you split the coils of the MM pick-up, they are supposed to be in the 60's & 70's rear Jazz pick-up placement. Or close as hell to it.
This is why they don't quite get the MM sound 100%. Close, but not quite there.
On mine, the MM pick-up is in the exact MM position.

I'm glad it worked out so well. When I was talking to Big Mike about the design I was wondering if the combine sound would work out ... since I'd never seen it done. But we knew you loved the true MM sound, and that theres only one way to really get it -- put that pickup where it goes!

If you ever get a chance to throw down some sound clips I'd love to hear them.

I have the tracks from the DVD (where the pictures are taken from), but don't know how to extract the audio portion.
I'll check at church with the video and sound guys to see if one of them can burn me a copy of the songs.
That way you can hear it in context.
I ran it pretty much an even blend between the MM & the J pick-up that day. As I usually do.

The combo of the even blend really sounds great. I originally thought I would run mostly the MM pick-up, but with the J in there, it really gives a MM sound some J front pick-up girth!

I would guess that making a total commitment to the MM pickup would require a different EQ approach, and so would not be something you'd drop into and out of all the time. I'm a real set-it-and-forget-it guy, so I don't tend to mess with pickup blend very much during gigs. Plus, since the Skjold I usually play has a selector switch instead of a blend, I kind of can't, unless I want a really broad tone change - which I generally don't.

I'm a #1. :hyper: :hyper:

I just picked up this bass at Bass Specialties today. I was planning to thin out the heard for another Sadowsky 5, but now I wish I would have found this bass first. The action on it is crazy low and I love the Nordstrand pick ups.

Here are the spec's and hopefully pic's will come soon

34" 5 string Jazz Bass
Maple Neck w/Pau ferro Fretboard
Swamp Ash Body
59B' Finish
Clear Satin Finish on neck
Aguilar OBP-1 preamp
Vintage Tone Control
Nordstrand Big Single Pickups
