.:-The Warwick Amp Club-:.

I have used both a Crown 2402 (giant, heavy, but awesome and loud) and a QSC 1804 with mine. The QSC sounded great, but lacked the balls that the Hellborg and Crown power can deliver.

Hey Chris...next time you're in the Wick store: A/B the HB Pre thru the effects return of the LWA1000 vs LWA1000 alone. I'd be interested to know your impressions? :)

That's interesting. I do wonder how the power section of the LWA stacks up to the Hellborg Mono 500.

Yea, I actually sold my Mono 500 (weight:()...but certainly it is a stellar amp! To my ears, the LWA amp section was similar enough (not exact) to the M500, for me to justify selling the M500...and I DO like the additional headroom with the LWA. I tossed my HB Pre in a 2RU rack and sometimes use it thru my LWA1000 amp section. Imo, the HB Pre is subtly incredible, and has a pristine DI! Just curious to your a/b thoughts on the LWA1000 stand-alone vs HB Pre inserted...worth the trouble hauling it along???

Btw, congrats on your new HB system!

Hey Kev,

Interestingly enough I just met one of the Warwick store employees by chance while doing a gear deal. Completely random! Anyway, we were talking about filming things in the store and I suggested the Hellborg pre through the LWA power as you had mentioned, and we're going to make that happen, so you're goona get your wish!

Awesome...thanks, Chris!

Of course I see this thread after getting rid of my Warwick gear. I traded it in at long and McQuade for some other used hear. The pro get II head was a great piece of kit, as was the 410pro, but I wanted a more bassy cabinet, and after getting my pf500 I've lost use for the Warwick. However, whilei can get great, and different tones from the ampeg, I still find the preamp of the Warwick to be more versatile. I've been thinking about getting a Carvin head, or just trading back for the head.

Any love for the 'classic' Warwick amps?

A few weeks ago I scored myself an original new old stock Warwick CL combo for super cheap. One of the last German made models before production for everything apart from the Hellborg stuff was shifted to China. 150w, 12" speaker + horn.

Used mostly for home practice, and have had a bunch of jam sessions with bands and a full-on rehearsal with two guitars and drums. I've so far played my Stingray and Thumb through it. It did struggle at the rehearsal (as to be expected - it was against two Randall half stacks) but managed to pull through. The sound is very clear and clean, quite transparent, with a good solid low end, and it's built like a tank. Weighs about the same as one too - it's not light. It does have an extending suitcase-trolley like arm and rear wheels for rolling around. It fits pretty easily into the trunk of my car (an Astra). So portability isn't too much of a problem.

It definitely shows its age (the weight/volume ratio of gear you get these days is crazy, and it doesn't have a million different bells and whistles) but it's a very nice bit of kit and I honestly don't think you could find a new German-made amplifier of any brand for anything close to the price I paid for it (the equivalent of 250 euro). As a bonus, being NOS, it's covered by the full Warwick warranty.

It should be excellent for jazz trios and smaller gigs (even just as a monitor and using the DI for FOH) and I can't wait to give my double bass a spin when a gig shows up. It's got all the usual features (tuner out, DI, FX loop, etc.), as well as bigger gigs where there are a lot of things going on at the same time as well (perhaps a big band scenario or a house band deal) and overall, I'm pretty happy I've got a good practice amp that will hold its own at jamming/songwriting sessions and even band practice up to a point. I'll give it a crack at recording as well, and see how that works out.

Here it is with it's little brother: 20150119_200634.jpg

What do y'all think?

I`ve just bought an old X-TREME for a great price ! (the 1000W into 4 Ohms version )
Only had about 2 hours messin around with it in the Garage - Goin into two 2x12 G&K Neo cabs ....... VERY VERY LOUD !

Took a while to get a good eq setting , which will probably change at a gig , for my "bitsa jazz "( Nordstrand pups ) but WOW

Suprisingly , my Warwick Corvette sounded crap going through it .
Cant wait to set it up at next gig ( used it with one and two cabs )

My LWA 1000 will be kept as a standby at gigs now .
Will get some pics up when my camera decides to work .
Pete

Looking a bit closer at my x-treme , it seems a bit of a mixture . The manual ( downloaded ) shows.....

* One fan at back - mine has two
* One speakon - mine has one speakon + xlr for speakers
Could it be one of the older transition from old version to new ?

The large fan pushes air through the heatsink , while the smaller fan pushes air over the circuit board with the wire wound resistors .

Just checked , the xlr is wired up to the speakon , so either or both can be used providing that a min of 4 ohms is used .

Hey man - is there something I can help with or are you just describing it's weight?!!!

Oh man do I need help.

Im trying to eq a new (to me) aguilar gs 212 paired with my quad 6 .
At the moment im getting only mud q3/4 or glassy thin tones q 1/2.

I cant seem to find a happy medium, others have suggested a outboard pre like a tonehammer or sansamp, but i believe in this case its user error. Previously Ive only used very simple EQs.

My research leads me to think that you can dial almost any tone you want. I just dont know how.

Can you tell me what your basic settings are and a little bit about what you think the "philosophy" of how this pre is voiced and is meant to work.
Thanks a lot!

The Quad is by no means a simple beast. Each of the presents has it's own EQ curve. It is definitely a warm\bassy amp with everything set flat but I can definitely get some grindy\bright tones out of it. Above ive attached a screenshot that shows the default EQ of each Quad preset and also the affect of each EQ knob (I hope it's readable, I'm typing this out on my cell phone in my lunch break ). My take is this...
Preset 1 - typical mid scoop EQ. Sounds nice and smooth but not my cup of tea.
Preset 2 - close to flat response EQ wise. Not a bad place to start on this amp.
Preset 3 - this preset has a low end roll off that starts around 200hz and starts to get steeper down around 100hz. Odd that you find this preset muddy because of this roll off. This is my favourite preset as you can generally add the bass in that you need. It also has quite a boost in high treble, but to be honest it's in a frequency zone that most bass speakers won't reproduce.
Preset 4 - I call this preset the "Ampeg with Ultra Hi and Ultra Low buttons pushed in". Reminds me too of Sansamp BDDI tone, it's very bassy and trebly by default and can be EQ'd for a really good metal tone, but I dare say that's not what you're after.
From there, here's my take on the knobs in a general sense;
Bass button - large boost around 40-600hz
Bass knob - boost\cut at around 80-90kz
Mid 1 - boost\cut at around 200hz
Mid 1 shift - boost\cut around 450hz
Mid 2 - boost\cut at around 600hz
Mid 2 shift - boost\cut at around 2khz
Treble knob - broad boost\cut at between 5 and 10khz
Treble button - large boost at very high treble frequencies

FWIW I rarely use P1 or OR, and never use the bass or treble buttons, but I do get diverse tones from P2 abd P3 in combination with the EQ. Use the frequencies above as a very general rule and just gave a play to find the tone you're after maybe? Gotta head back to work but hit me up for anything else you want to run by me yeah?

Thanks a lot JC, for interrupting your lunch too!

That is very helpful, i sat down earlier tonight with it and spent a good hour or so going over the eqs. It is some beast isnt it.

I found a home in Q3, but also had some success at Q4 although it starts to sound quite affected.

Im going to give Q2 a run before next rehursal.

Key for me was to stay flat, then make small cuts, slowly.

Thanks again.
