Yesterday:

A: One of the most gorgeous color I've ever seen. Fully translucent with a dark red/orange color. Sadly, an aggressive pour didn't give much head and the retention was really bad. Also, only light lacing.

S: It's a scotch ale and it doesn't lie. Very sweet smell. There is a lot of caramel, molasses, licorice, brown sugar and maple syrup. Also a lot of biscuit malts and bread like malts. Dark fruits are present. A tiny bit of vanilla. Very straightforward.

T: Pretty much the same as the smell. Except it's more on the fruits side than on the malty side. And grape. Quite a good level of alcohol present.

F: Not there at all. Way too watery for a scotch ale and the carbonation is near non existant.

D: It's balanced and easy to drink.

look: 3 | smell: 4 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 2 | drink: 4

Currently drinking though a Breckenridge sampler 12 pack. It's pretty damn tasty stuff to say the least. An amber ale, a vanilla porter, an oatmeal stout, and an IPA I just cracked open. So tasty...

I'd love to try some of their beers. I haven't seen any of them in any of the stores around here yet.

A: Straight copper color, fully translucent. Head is pure white, quite good, but lacks a bit of retention a bit. Insane amount of lacing. Gorgeous beer.

S: They used German hops for this brew and it shows. There are lots of piny hops in this, with a good mix of herbal hops. There also are a good level of citrus hops, makes me think mostly of lime. A nice sweetness is present, making me think of brown sugar. A bit of tartness also present. Not as strong as the other offerings yet still very interesting.

T: Starts out real smooth and sweet: there is tart and brown sugar. Then, it's a good level of the lime like hops, but still in smoothness, nothing really aggressive. Then, there is lots of piny hops, without any sweetness, it's raw and in your face. It is accompanied by a light grassy-ness. Really a nice complex, layered brew. It develops in the mouth, really interesting.

M: Medium to heavy body, really smooth feel and a nice level of carbonation to keep a brew like this alive. Right on the spot. The only reason it doesn't get a 5 here is because I would have preferred a bit more carbonation.

D: It's an IPA, it's not an intimidating brew. Easy to drink but because of its "bigger" nature in the feel and in the taste, it isn't as sessionnable as the Amarillo version.

They did a great job with the Amarillo to bring the West coast hops, a great job with the Simcoe and Bravo for a more East coast version, but this really has a German feel to it. In that sense, that beer is a success.

Bayou Teche LA 31 Biere Pale. The name and six pack package want you to badly think you're drinking a Louisiana beer, but it is brewed by the Lazy Magnolia brewery in Kiln, Mississippi. Ironically, that fact is the only reason I bought it as Lazy Magnolia makes a really good pecan ale.

Came home from a long day at the office followed by a home depot run followed by dropping off a truckload of fence pieces at the place we're moving to. Walked in the door. Wife says "I got you a Pliny, it's in the fridge waiting for you."

For those who haven't tried it, there's a reason Pliny The Elder gets mentioned a lot. If you're into hops and haven't tried Pliny, do so as soon as you can.

Since moving to the Midwest, I've become a big fan of the Three Floyds brews, esp. the Alpha King, but nothing made me happier than when I found out that Stone Brewing Co. was going to start shipping to Chicago and I could get Arrogant Bastard Ale. Now I just need to somehow convince someone to start carrying Red Tail Ale....
