Inspired by Mr. Perry's pimping of the Magic Hat IPA, I tried a pint of Magic Hat #9 last night (the bar I was at didn't have the IPA). I didn't love it. There was an odd flavor - kind of dry and nutty - that threw it off for me.
The last two that I've bought and am currently drinking are Dogfish Head Raison D'Etre (I find it to really keep me interested with the layering of flavors) and Lakefront Brewery Local Acre Lager (my personal favorite made from totally local ingredients with an interesting "wet hopping" process that is made possible with the going local). I also happen to be playing at the Lakefront Brewery New Year's party. I am a big fan of their lineup and excited to be playing for them.

I was actually going to warn *against* the #9. It's an apricot infused beer and definitely has a funky flavor. I like most if not all of the other Magic Hat brews, however.
That stuff is disgusting and oddly enough, I think their most popular beer!?! At least the one I see most often on tap.
Their Fat Angel and Blind Faith are good though!

Jubelale from Deschutes Brewing is a little different each year, but I've greatly enjoyed every release so far. I will try to go next door from my open mic tonight and sample a pint or three, then report back. Not sure how far east Deschutes' distribution has progressed at this point though?

Saturday I drank 3 22 oz. bottles of Double Bastard Ale, which was oh.....so good, and then stubbed my little toe in my drunk staggering around the house. I must have broken it because it grew to the size of 3 little toes. So I took a percocet to help with the pain around 2 in the afternoon. Then I woke up Sunday morning.
Not a Christmas ale per say, but I tried the Invalid Link Removed and it was pretty darn good if you like Scotch ales.

Although not as outright hoppy as one would expect from an IPA-style beer, there is enough bitterness to please an IPA-lover's palate, and it seems to be a good balance with the high alcohol content. I found myself sipping and savoring this beer at a slightly slower pace than I typically do - more like the way I would drink a glass of good wine - and there's enough flavors going on to make it worth while. I would easily put this among the best beers I've ever had. The only downside is the price tag.

One of my favorite beers! If you want knock-you-on-your-ass hoppiness with a %ABV to match, try their 120 minute IPA.
So I've recently tried the Arrogant Bastard (A), the Rogue Double Dead Guy (A+) and the Magic Hat Howl--their winter seasonal (A-).
Tis the season to drink good beer.
