I've been enjoying Magic Hat "Howl" this weekend. I was lukewarm about it before but now that I've lived with another sixer of it, IMO it's pretty good. I also quite enjoyed the Flying Dog "Gonzo" porter I mentioned earlier, but it made me have weird dreams...........:confused:

So I'm making the rounds, trying different drinks to see what I like. This weeks bottle was Southern Comfort, I thought it was pretty good, but I'd like something better. I liked that it was sort of surpy thick, I liked the fruityness too. It could have been a little smoother, but it wasn't bad at all. But, it has what I can only describe as a cheap liquor taste. The fist few pulls were kinda nasty until I got used to it every night that I drank some. Does anyone know of another spicy, fruity liquer that doesn't taste so bad on the first taste?

I give it a solid A. If you like in your face IPA's, this is the beer for you.

I just had the Sam Smith's India Ale and enjoyed it. This is my idea of a good IPA. I really don't care for overly hoppy beers and this one nails it for me. If you like to be smacked in the face by an extremely hoppy beer, well that's fine, but I'll pass thank you. Just my opinion. :cool: That said, in spite of my earlier remarks about it I'm getting strung out on the Magic Hat "Howl"; too bad it's only available in the winter. I'm now feeling like it blows Optimator down the street. :D

Harpoon "Belgian Pale Ale"

It's good and named well. Definitely has the Belgian thing going on.

I love me some mix pack action, but I feel like some of the Harpoon styles wind up more like "flavors" than "styles." Something about the flavors that don't cohere. It might be better in one of my pilsener glasses than straight from the bottle.

Trying some Sam Adams Noble Pils. The commercial touts a hoppiness. I don't taste alot of hops. I don't fault the beer for that though. It is a pilsner. It's a good beer though. A little on the light side. Leaves the palete pretty quickly. It would make a great summertime beer. One of those beers that you can take 4 or 5 good gulps from on the first taste.

A: Cloudy boring brown color with big beige head. Retention is ok but lacing is lacking.

S: A lot of spices upfront. Cinnamon and cloves are the dominant ones, accompanied by pepper and coriander. Strong malts are also present. Molasses are very present as well as buckwheat honey, maple syrup, spiced bread. A little bit of fruits too: passion fruit, candied oranges, red apples and lemon zest. Quite complex.

T: Very much the same as the nose. The spices are upfront again: cinnamon and cloves first, then pepper and coriander. Again the strong malts are very present with strong molasses, buckwheat honey, maple syrup and spiced bread. Less fruity than the smell though: I got candied oranges, red apples and very slight lemon zest. Some light earthy and herbal hops at the end.

M: Medium to heavy body with medium carbonation. Fits perfectly the beer.

D: Complex taste, balanced taste, what you'd expect from belgium. Very drinkable.
