There’s a chicken in my yard.

one summer day a few years back i woke up took my dogs out. and there is a peacock on my porch. keep in mind i live in a decent sized city. right on a very busy main road...here is this 4 ft tall peacock.. it stayed most the summer. i feed it oatmeal and crackers.. it mostly sat on my porch. literally day after it left , a brown hen showed up and stayed for a bit . and laid eggs

Co. I worked for in San Diego had a horse farm nearby, with peacocks. One got loose, ended up around our bldg, a couple gals went out to say hi (to a 2-3' tall bird...), they got it cornered right by a window/coffee station so we could watch, and had the crap scared out of them when it ran at them to get away. Good times.

Update: something is afoot here.

A chicken foot.

Nice. Our little town won't allow us to have any, but somehow 30+ trains a day going through blasting their horns is OK.

OTOH, there's no shortage of cool wild birds that hang out in our yard.

Here are the regs for having "backyard chickens" in Sacramento. Nearby, in Fair Oaks, chickens live wild and free... because, well no one really seems to know. Some say they're remnants from when the old chicken farm closed. Others blame old Hugh Gorman. But, as Gorman says, it isn't a chicken problem. No one ever complains about a hen. It's the roosters. They have outnumbered the hens for years, and that's a problem. I don't know anyone who eats rooster.

We were playing a benefit for our local Zoo. While unloading a peacock started attacking the guitar players car! The GP started chasing the peacock going, "Shoo!Shoo!" around and around his car. Finally the peacock took off a bit but a few minutes later he was back at it and the scene repeated. The peacock was doing some actual damage so the GP gave up and moved his car. Peacock 1 GP 0. The zoo manager told us that some peacocks were territorial and would attack reflections. So, next time any of you play a zoo benefit don't park near the peacocks or, drive a dirty car.

I had a rooster that took up residence in my back yard in my previous house. Called animal control. They came out, didn't find it, but left a ticket on my front door, saying I had to get rid of the rooster. I called the police station, and had to explain that I was not the owner of the rooster; I was the person who wanted it removed. Eventually, I got to the Sergeant on duty, and after a while, he asked "So, what you'r really asking is for me to fix your rooster ticket?". We did eventually get a laugh out of that, once he understood what had happened.

Animal control was not that helpful - they called me a couple times after they'd come out to investigate - "cant find him". I asked when they came out - they said 9 AM. I informed them that he announce his position every 10 to 15 seconds at 5 AM; maybe they could come out then. They weren't so keen on that idea.
Hilarious, I can hear AC now.

"Mr. Rooster, can you come out please?"

MR, "....……."

AC, "We know you're under there. We just want to talk."

MR, "....……..Cluck you!"

AC, "Come on we don't want to hurt you, just talk."

MR, "You want to eat me! CLUCK OFF!"

AC, "We promise not, last chance."

MR, "Just,...….. don't TASE me man! Don't Tase Me!"

We did have conversations about a barbeque while I was talking to animal control. I was fine with that - after a couple of weeks of 4:30 wake ups from a frickin' rooster, any part of me that cares about animal welfare was pretty much gone.
