Things that annoy you

What annoys me? Pretty much everything get off my lawn dammit. :D
In Seattle, the green painted lanes come up in areas where the bike only lane intersects with motor vehicle lanes.
It is meant to raise awareness for motor vehicle operators that they are entering an area where they will share the road with bicyclists.
Which brings me back to....if you didn't have bike only lanes, then you wouldn't need to tell motor vehicles operators that they are about to enter an area on the street where bicyclists are riding also.
It just seems to add to the confusion for many drivers that now they also need to discern when to and not to be aware of bicyclists sharing lanes with them.
Then I can go on about the bicyclists.

It's naive to think bike only lanes really work. The ONLY way IMHO that will make them work is if there is a curb between cars and the bike only lanes. I see these lanes (without curbs) and also see cars on them.

Just curious and not making any assumptions, but what did your neighbors think when you moved in?:)

I've been on the block the longest, so everyone pays tribute to me!

Another thing that annoys me: General dumb statements/questions, such as:

You're sitting on a newspaper, and someone asks, "Are you reading that?"
or
You show someone something you just bought, and they say,"I have the same exact thing, only it's different."

or terrible jokes, such as: The Dumb Brothers go into business for themselves. They buy watermelons for $1, and sell them for $.50. At the end of the first week, one brother turns to the other and says, "I think we better work Saturday!"

I'm getting out of here while the getting is good! :D

People who can only talk/brag about themselves.

We have a lady in our office who is very nice and pleasant, yet no matter what anybody starts talking about, she has to immediately steer the conversation around so it's about her and her family, and how they're the smartest, 'bestest', most talented, hardest-working, etc, etc.

Similarly, I have a brother-in-law who is the same...always bragging about himself. And isn't shy about stretching the truth. One time just for fun, I said I had once jumped out of three-story building. His immediate response was, "That's nothing, I once jumped out of a five story building!" I'm thinking to myself, "Sure you did. And obviously landed on your head."

People like this annoy me too. For example their kid might be a good musician for a 12 year old, but their skills at operating an instrument are simply way beyond their abilities to mix any real emotional depth, poise or taste into their playing. I recall having to play a few concerts, as a spotty teenager, alongside a girl (from another school, shock horror!) who played violin like the bow was a hacksaw and the strings were wood. Yet her mother thought she was a brilliant musician and very advanced for her years. Why did she play everything so angrily? Facebook informs me that this girl teaches music now, which demonstrates the old adage that 'those that can, do. Those that can't, teach'. My violin-scratching peers and I were consistently and haughtily overlooked both by this girl and by her mother. Charming.

Similarly irritating are one-uppers, especially when it comes to medical stuff. Take a day off work because of food poisoning? 'Oh well, when we were in Thailand I couldn't get off the toilet for most of the first week! Now that was some food poisoning'.

Annoying for two reasons. 1) They've minimised my suffering down to naught and 2) they've casually dropped in their holiday to Thailand and still tried to make it about their personal suffering. In a similar way we were talking about humid weather in the office once, and my colleague just had to mention that the most humid weather she had encountered was in Sumatra. Like that added anything to the conversation...

My personal pet peeve at the moment is new parents expecting sympathy because they just sharted out a child and haven't been getting much sleep. It was your decision to have a kid in the first place.... likewise those that think they somehow become founts of wisdom because they have children, and somehow they've earned their 'university of life' diploma and can suddenly lecture you on any number of topics, including those they only learned about five minutes previously.... again; you sharted out a child, as have billions before you, shut up already. I've noticed that middle class parents are especially bad for this. Firing out a kid seems to have become some endlessly dicey, challenging piece of experimental project management. You haven't really achieved anything as a modern middle class parent unless your kid has a surname for a first name (McKenzie, etc), a wacky food intolerance, an Asperger's diagnosis you made yourself from having trawled Netmums late at night (a diagnosis the doctor doesn't agree with, and which is why you are changing doctors) and no damn rules or restrictions.

Finally, parents complaining because their young kids come into the bathroom when they are in there. Set up some ground rules and do some damn disciplining already! And lock the door! Teach your kids that there is a world out there in which they aren't the center of attention!

What really scares me off having children in the future is the sheer number of massively self-absorbed, overly indulgent and totally undisciplined children I see. Most with either an iPhone or iPad parked in front of them in lieu of real parenting. Five year old kids with absolutely zero vocabulary, communicative skills or any real ability to express their emotions. In turn these kids will become dead-eyed and emotionally jilted teenagers, constantly angry but without any means of effectively communicating their anger, thoughts and frustrations. This seems to be occurring across every point on the social ladder. It isn't just poor deprived kids, or the highly privileged.

Great post. You and I should collaborate on writing a book!

In your last paragraph, you allude to five-year-old kids with zero vocabulary, social skills, etc. Judging by the employees my wife has working in her office, I can say the same for TWENTY-FIVE yr old kids, too!

Probably my paranoia coming to the fore, but I do wonder what direction society goes in when the bulk of it can no longer describe their concerns adequately or coherently.

When the person who has his TWO full range JBL cabinets pointing at his knees, capable of 130 dB, and said person motivated me via damage to my right ear from his loudness to use earplugs and then go ampless + IEM...motions to me at a gig and mouths:

"I can't hear your bass"

My response? Point at my IEM earbuds and say:
"It sounds fine in here and so does the FOH mix. I can hear everything perfectly."

PS: My ears don't ring anymore after gigs!

Which one would describe yourself? ;)
The former. I've noticed a tendency to act like I heard what someone said when I really didn't. I now force myself to listen and often have to ask them to repeat themself.

I then realized that a lot of the older guys I knew were doing it in spades, and at some time just got tired of asking. I started playing in loud bands when I was 45. A lot of them have been doing it since they were teenagers.

Though yes, I know you were joking. ;)

I notice that a lot around old musicians. I think it's because they can't hear. Either that or they are painfully narcissistic.

Narcissistic, good choice of words.

I think this is the problem with many people in the world. Seriously.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am not narcissistic, because, I'm just too perfect to be narcissistic! :D

And, I am not stubborn, and no one, I mean no one is gonna tell me I'm stubborn!

And, I'm not paranoid either. But I have to be careful walking home at night because of all the dragons! :roflmao:

OK, my next annoyance post:

People in sandwich shops who don't cut the sandwich all the way through! Did they all go to the same school for this?

Mike ;)
