They still have those all over the place in Finland in the public bathrooms. I've never actually seen one in the US.

Not necessarily the free air (we still have that here); but, these old air pumps are disappearing.

I wouldn't hate paying for air so much if gas stations still had real hi-capacity compressors. I used to fill air bottles up to 120 psi at gas stations on the way to motorcycle races. Now it's $1 just to slowly wheeze 35 psi into a tire. Now I have my own compressor and I don't get anything at a gas station but gas.

Yeah! I remember my dad didn't even get out of the car. He would just pull up to the pump and two guys would run out to the car. By the time one had filled the tank the other had checked and inflated the tires and checked up the oil. Gas was way cheaper AND it gave a lot of people their first job.

Well yea.. every day I use that same machine at work, only the towel is blue. There is no "attendant", so who ever gets the end of the roll had better reload or be scorned!

I miss the full service stations, I had a job at one as a teen, that's where I learned to clean a windshield "streak free". We didn't have the spiffy uniforms though. Things were already slipping in the '70's.

I definitely remember this, and also the fact that many offered "savings stamps" (S&H were the most popular) and frequent premiums of various kinds, including glassware (one glass per fill-up, could purchase the pitcher anytime) or toys.

However, I also remember that my younger brother (in high school at the time) worked at one. It was a minimum wage job, and when the owner went out of business, my brother discovered that his withholding had not been forwarded to the tax authorities!
