Hell, I grew up wearing shoes from Pic-Way!
Seriously, I never got a 'good' brand of tennies until high school. Even then they were just Kinneys (not Nike/Puma/Adidas).
The same for me. I never had any brand name sneakers as a kid in the 1960s. Converse, P. F. Flyers, Red Ball Jets, etc. were totally out of the question. My parents could not afford much. My mother worked in a department store in town and I would get the budget sneakers and wear them until there were holes in them even when I outgrew them.
They looked like these and I usually had the black sneakers.
Mom always bought me Keds. I wanted Red Ball Jets. Hell, it had “Jets” right in the name! What kid wouldn’t want them!

Reminds me of the Apple store when the new iPhones came out.
The cool kids wore "track" shoes, black with three white striped. I had the standard issue white, when new, "tennie" shoes.
I remember when my sneakers had four stripes, not three. They went great with my slightly flared hand-me-down jeans.
Confused by a couple things. “Better selected stores”? So, you weren’t gonna find these at Kmart? I dunno what the “cheap” stores were in the 70s. Montgomery Wards? Also the “about $9”. What a laid back way to describe a price. The add sounds like it could’ve been written by Matthew McConaughy’s Wooderson character from Dazed and Confused. Also, does anyone else think the woman behind the bike kinda looks like Brittney Spears and Lindsay Lohan mixed together?

What is more amazing is somebody actually bought and wore these. I can’t imagine anybody actually doing that, but people are strange.
LOL. Did you live through those times or are you quite young still? Because I was in HS in the mid 70s and I sure remember that sort of thing and much, much more outrageous stuff. But I grew up in the NYC and Westchester so perhaps we were just more..."fashion aware."
Now don't get me wrong, I am the guy that didn't wear jeans for 25 years because I thought they were too much of a fashion thang.
Lived through them, out of college and in law school by ‘75. I’m definitely not young (see my profile pic, lol!). I was a Levis guy. I couldn’t stand “groovy” crap.
