Things You've Learned by Postings on TB

Things you've learned Posting on TB

1) Don't be a Dick.....yes, I've violated this policy, but I've gotten better over the years.....no one likes a "Pain in the As@"

2) Just because you own it, or had owned it, doesn't mean you can defensively suggest if this product is for someone interested in it or not....try to stay neutral.....all equipment and music is subjective

3) I like the Carrots option....because ultimately, I don't care what you play or do.....as long its not illegal :)

What do you guys got?

This has a familiar ring. Dilletantes have delicate littles egos, all too often.

As a recovering dilettante, I agree. Try not to go too hard on them though (unless they're really being jerks), it kinda hurts having all of your ideas and conclusions mercilessly smashed to the ground by the cold fist of experience. Most of us do learn eventually though.

Stick to facts and what you can back up by solid, personal experience.
Don't get into debates that are just a matter of taste or preference, unless those are what the OP asked for. Skip "best" threads.

As far as the thread is concerned, I think the most impactful and concise knowledge on this site has been in the Strings forum. Most of the threads there are very informative as to the tonal characteristics of just about every string ever manufactured. Furthermore, it is rare with respect to the rest of the internet at large in that the majority (not every post, but the majority) of advice and anecdotes has proved to be in line with my own experiences, whether reading about strings I already tried, or strings that I read about and then bought.

This has had the important effect of training my own ears and brain to be able to recognize which frequencies and timbres I'm hearing. For example, before I ever really quite knew the differences between "low end" or "middy honk" or "singing highs", I thought that strings like Hi Beams or Sunbeams were a mid-heavy string. I liked the sound, and for years thought that certain mid-focused strings sounded lacking and "didn't have enough mids" like the DR's did. i looked up some threads, and most people characterized them as "scooped". I finally recorded some samples in pro tools with some GHS Pressurewounds and some DR's, looked at them with a spectrum analyzer, and went "huh. look at that. DR's are actually kinda scooped".

From there, I've been able to make more informed decisions and form more accurate opinions about what I actually want out of my gear. I've pretty much settled on D'Addario Nickels for the most part; they do have a specific midrange boost that I like, and cover enough of the the "singing highs" that I liked in the DR's.

This has the double bonus of being able to make better decisions while mixing my stuff in Pro Tools: turns out I've been doing the opposite of what I've actually wanted to do for years.

I also learned that R.I.P. has made it his mission to like almost every post in in thread.
That is correct...any participation in any thread I start gets a "Like"....well most :)

Here's the deal. We are all bassist, and try to learn from each other, whether you take a members advice or not, its up to you.

Some members are a little more forward with there advice, some not.....but what I learned, is we are all trying to help each other in our own way......keep the "Low End" guys

With no advice.....we're all in the dark

I've learned that when you try to have an argument with a moderator even if you're right, you're wrong.

i have learned that i have alot to learn

thanks TB Family~

it's good that you've already come to this conclusion :)

I've been here for ten years and wasted too many of them thinking I already know everything and I'm surrounded by idiots.
You three should get together and have a chat. :smug: ;)

PS. I learned Floating thumb technique here, it rocks!!
