Things You've Learned by Postings on TB

I've learned what works for some doesn't work for me (for example p bass and big muffs)

I've also been introduced to several brands on TB that i might never have tried as local stores don't carry them. Most notably darkglass electronics. Which I'm now a big fan of.

I've learned that a lot of bass players may not be into playing in an original band, but they still care about their sound as much as a lot of people in originals bands.

I've learned that it's not always about the most expensive gear, but the right "tools" for the job.

I've learned what companies respect their target customers and come here and talk about their products.

I've learned that some folks here will bite your head off just for stating what you like, for stating what you don't like, or even for simply asking a question.

I've learned that a great deal of the most courteous, friendly & helpful people here hang out in my favorite two threads - the Rickenbacker Club & the Spector Club.

I've learned not to dive into an obvious troll thread, no matter how tempting.

I've learned about some great single-malt scotch & hot sauce brands from occasional visits to the "off-topic" section.

I've always known that there is no "best bass", no "best amp", and really no "best anything" when it comes to gear, yet I never cease to be amazed at how many TB'ers jump at the chance to explain why their choice is "the best", while ignoring (and often ridiculing) anyone else's opinions.

Lastly, I've learned that time spent playing bass is usually more productive than time spent talking bass.

I have learned that there are used bass guitars out there that are well-made, have killer pickups, are MIA, are in no need of modification, and can be found for the price of an entry level import from Asia or Indonesia.

Thank you Foundation lovers for turning me on to a great bass model not to mention saving me a hell of a lot of money.

Things you've learned Posting on TB

1) Don't be a Dick.....yes, I've violated this policy, but I've gotten better over the years.....no one likes a "Pain in the As@"

2) Just because you own it, or had owned it, doesn't mean you can defensively suggest if this product is for someone interested in it or not....try to stay neutral.....all equipment and music is subjective

3) I like the Carrots option....because ultimately, I don't care what you play or do.....as long its not illegal :)

What do you guys got?

as for me, all of the above & still learning! I've also learned that all Bass players are not created equal!

& a bonus lesson!

killed_ by_death reminding me how much my spelling sucks here and then! but it's ok, I already knew it. :)

That TB folks are incredibly generous and trusting. I been sent strings to try by one for no charge. I sent him cash anyway for his generosity. An effects pedal by another that I didn't care for. Sent it back with cash to cover his shipping and we are best of friends. Another sent me a Moody strap (75 bucks new) that I fell in love with and bought from him. And another TB'r custom made me a right angle cord that won't pop when I unplug...... And didn't want paid for it. I paid him anyways.... Thank goodness I am not a crook. TB'rs are a trusting group. Makes me proud.

1. I learned you have to get a feel for people's backgrounds so you can weight their opinions realistically.

2. I learned many musicians think way differently than me -- particularly non-band leader types. It helped me shape my current style of band leadership and management.

3. I found the Ignore button, the Report Post button, and persisting in giving solid reasons for my positions, are among my greatest friends for certain people who get uncivil with me, or attack/troll my posts

4. I learned the importance of following my own intuition after careful, deep consideration of the opinions of pros. One size does not fit all, and tradition is not always the best teacher.

What I have learned:

It's perfectly logical for someone to buy a bunch of effect pedals/ rack gear without researching what any of the products actually do. It is also standard practice to post a thread about your cluelessness and have 30 people tell you how to hook everything up. Because they know the tone in your head and exactly how to achieve it.:eyebrow:

I have also learned to stay away from threads like this to keep my sanity.:)

Things I've learned posting on TB?

I don't know about posting, but reading the infinite number of knowledgeable threads authored by members on this site has led me to the general conclusion that it only takes a small spark to ignite one's bank account, in the pursuit of new equipment...

... poof! As the smoke clears, behold...

... a new bass, amp, cab, a small furry animal, as well as a proper fit spandex onesie...
