if you don’t have anything with the music of Marcus Miller his name big on the headstock can be a turn off for some people I guess. The same reason why people don’t buy signature basses of bassists they have nothing with.

Lots of people play Les Paul guitars without worrying about "his name big on the headstock" when they "don't have anything" with his music.

Anyone who passes on Sire guitars because of the font size of Marcus' name on the headstock is being an immature loser, imho. No Sire basses for you. No great loss to the rest of us.

That's true and fine, and yes, I don't have a lot of respect for anyone who would walk by a good deal because of such a trivial thing. Hey, that's just me - you do you, ok?

The "big name" on a Les Paul is Gibson. As far as being an immature loser goes, look in the mirror. We get it. Sire gave you a bass and you've been on the knob ever since.

You might want to reevaluate that remark. People pass on instruments for various reasons, aesthetics being a major factor. Now you choose to resort to name calling of those who aren't enamored with your beloved brand, who's the immature individual in this exchange?

I bought a Sire so I had a fretted five string I would travel with. It is so good I am amazed. I believe it is equivalent to basses in the $1,500 to $2,000 range. I paid $500 with tax. The ONLY nit I can pick is a minor cosmetic blemish that took me days to notice. That’s why I now have two.

Had it occurred to anyone that these aren't "signature" instruments in the way we typically use that term? It could just be that Marcus Miller is invested in getting quality instruments to people at a decent price and is happy to put his name on that endeavour as a whole?

That is, in fact, my understanding of the whole venture.

I wonder how many people are really just trying to hide their disdain for certain types of people, rather than specific names or the size of them.

I've bought "signature" products in the past with the names of people of whose music I wasn't particularly a fan. Not that I necessarily *disliked* their music, it just wasn't what I typically listen to. As I said earlier, I had a Jack DeJohnette cymbal, I had a Peter Erskine snare, Bill Bruford drumsticks, and probably others. All great musicians, but I didn't buy those products because of them, but because the specs fit my tastes.

Taylor Swift plays a Johnny Marr Jaguar. Is she a diehard fan of The Smiths? Or did she just find a guitar that she liked? I personally was a huge fan of The Smiths, but I wouldn't buy the guitar just because of his name, I'd buy it because he and I have similar notions about how a guitar should work. Heck, I'd be more likely to buy it if Fender reissued it as the Taylor Swift Signature Model.

There are probably some musicians whose names I would find off-putting on an instrument, people with really objectionable views or past histories, I suppose, but I can't think of any off the top of my head.

Hardly an expert bassist here, but I find the Sire basses to just *demolish* Fender in just about every way. To get a Fender as good as an $800 Sire, you are getting into the American Performer and up range. Sire is slaying Fender MIM IMHO. The overall build quality and playability on the Sire basses are untouchable at double the money. Just my $0.05.

MTD has that color of silk if I remember correctly. I "think" some GHS Boomers as well but I can't remember which ones.

I think Sire's are very nice for the money. I think whether or not it crushes a MIM Fender comes down more to specs and what a user wants from a bass than the quality. I have not met a Sire that I thought was equal to a $1000 + bass but they are higher quality than the price would suggest.

I thought this thread was about the new Z series Sires. Weird. Anyway, I pre-ordered a Z3 but I'm considering the Z7 instead after hearing a mmj style bass. I like the idea of the extra tone options with the J plus the narural wood with the roasted neck just look so cool.

yes, we need videos or audios of the Z series and people's real world experience. Otherwise there is not much to talk about. There are only a handful videos on YT, all with not so great sound qualitly, so it's hard to judge now.

They have had constant problems keeping stock available. I find it weird that they have announced so many new instruments all of a sudden, and *nothing* is in stores or out for demos yet. Very strange.

Not strange at all. They announced new products at NAMM, like people have done for years. Now we're all just waiting for the first wave to ship. It's not an issue of "keeping stock available" because there is no stock. This is just the normal wait between when a new product is announced and when it ships.

That's because they have not been available yet, and AFAIK won't be delivered before June or July, so there's just this little info about some NAMM prototypes. We'll need to be patient.

Exactly. And to add to that they likely had X amount of basses in preproduction before NAMM with the expectation for them to get shipped by second quarter. Then, depending on if preorders meet or exceed preproduction, they adjust the factory schedule so that the next round is ready by late 3rd or early 4th Q.

These days you can’t get too far ahead of yourselves especially with overseas production.

To add even further to this by way of example, my wife owns a boutique clothing and gift store. She is already buying for Fall 2025. These clothing manufacturers know today what you will be wearing in 2027. Scary.

That's been my experience as well. I own a MIM 50s Precision from the Classic Series (2009) and an American Performer Mustang (2020), and they're both pretty good instruments. After I tried a Sire U5 last year, I knew I'd need to pick up something from them. The P8 caught my eye (the neck is unbelievable), and it immediately became my favorite instrument.

I know the P8 isn't a "budget" instrument per se, but to try and find a comparable instrument for less than $2000 is really challenging. Even the U5 beats all of my Fender instruments in most regards, especially because of the excellent fretwork.
