I'm an old dog, but this isn't all that weird, really. Actually, having some fun with it all. Guess all us 60+ people are receptive to change? Go figure.
You'd prefer to use decade-old, unsupportable software, on a forum where lots and lots of people are buying and selling real stuff with real cash? I guess in the wake of the OpenSSL heartbleed bug extravaganza, they decided to take measures to make sure all of our accounts can't be compromised at literally any time. I like the new layout, and if new software stops my account from getting hijacked a year from now, then that's a pretty big plus too.

I can say this much, it took brass balls to move away from the old vbulletin site. A ton of popular forums are still using vbulletin versions that are probably 10 years old. These guys do a great job here. Cut them some slack on the new format. I'm sure it will all work out.
It's quite different, but after driving around to check the landscape, I quite like the new software. 
Many people are resistant to change or frustrated having to figure new things out. Some people could find a reason to complain about free money.

Are you using an iphone? From what I gather the android app is working, at least for some?
Im on Android and it wont even fully open.
Edit: I got the two updates over the last couple days and when opening it would just say "connecting to server" and close. So I just uninstalled it and reinstalled and it works again... cool. Thanks.

Actually the Safari view of TB is quite functional and pleasing from my perspective. works very well and almost makes the dedicated app redundant.
I think the main problem is that it's ugly and hurts a lot of peoples eyes and is possibly only fixed with using a specific browser which I and a lot of other people probably don't have. Ugly is not good for a visual medium.
I actually like the new layout, the search feature works better, I can actually find stuff in the classifieds now, I was finally able to upload an avatar, and all the forum options are now modernized. But then again I haven't been here very long compared to 90% of the community so maybe I should be the one talking....
Just like every time gmail or facebook or any other site updates, there are a bunch of folks that hem and haw. I've been guilty of it myself. I felt a twinge of that the first time I opened talkbass the other day after the upgrade. But I gave it a few days, and guess what - it's still talkbass. And isn't that why we all use the site? Because it's talkbass?
I don't ever recall going to to a site that was totally irrelevant to my life and thinking "ya know what, the color balance, responsive design and new post process flow is amazing, why don't I spend my free time on this irrelevant site!". Nope. I go to a site and go "holy crap. A site populated by bass players, full of information, willing to share, and most of whom happen to be great human beings. I'm gonna spend my time here."
It actually makes me sad to see people that have been members of talkbass for over a decade spouting off at the mouth that they're gonna consider leaving the site because the moderators/owners had to make a software change to keep the site live and running for another decade. Get over yourselves and appreciate this community, even if you *gasp* have to look at some avatars or *gasp* liked the old colors better. /rant

Just passing along a tip somebody shared with me:
To make the pages look like the old TB, scroll to the bottom of the page, and tap on "TalkBass 2014." The style chooser box will open; choose Retro.

My main gripe is that too much space is taken up on the right side of the screen by the sign-in buttons and "latest posts."
Also, many TBers have cool avatars but since I visit the site for "talk" rather than visual arts, I'd rather not see them when viewing the list of threads in a subforum. What would be cool, though, would be allowing big or animated avatars that could be viewed by clicking on them (put a discreet "+" box in lower right corner to indicate the avatar can be viewed larger.) Many times I've wanted to see someone's avatar much larger, and animation should be encouraged without making it an annoyance.
The "likes" is probably the biggest change. One thing I've enjoyed about TB as a beginning bassist is figuring out on my own who to pay attention to and who to ignore among the very active crowd, and whether someone who's only posted a few times is an expert, journeyman, troll or fool. I'd like the option to disable viewing "likes received" globally. (I've never used Facebook but am a Twitter addict.)
It appears the TB interface continues to evolve, and all the older talk has been preserved for searching, and that's a very good thing!

This is indeed and upgrade, I don't know why everyone fears change so much.
The avatars a great, the fact that the profile info is on the left (compared to the top) is a vast improvement.
Unlimited photo quota...YES! Just love it.
I have it on retro now, just to keep that classic vibe with the blue bars I like.

Yes, the new search is a big step forward. Among other features which makes the forum more fresh and up-to-date.
But I am not a friend of all these social platforms with their Likes Counters and F...bookeverywhere approach. And I am missing some - for me essential - features of the old forum (daily email digest, newest post on top, unread posts highlighted etc.). Instead of that a bunch of new fetaures I never missed. It will take a long time to become as familiar with it as I've been before...
But in the end I will still be a happy member of the best bass player's forum in the world...

I take it back. Once I learned how to get around the new software, I've found the site much improved. Sorry for the initial knee jerk response. (May 10, 2014)
I know you've since changed your tune, Tone (
), but anyone that hasn't (yet) and agrees with being invoiced for part of the cost of running the previous software might be in for a shock. As noted here, the previously used software is no longer being updated and since the internet moves forward so quickly, it would require TalkBass hiring a programmer (or possibly two) just to keep it current and running securely. I know I wouldn't want to help shoulder that cost when other, less costly options were available.Actually, vBulletin is still the leader when it comes to the number of total installs on the internet. However, that number is dwindling at a fairly rapid pace:

"Big" is an understatement! The search function in XF is faster, scales better to larger systems and is more accurate in its results.
