this sounds stupid but is it ok to play punk live while sitting down not standing up?

I would say, no, it's not ok. You're saying a punk band, so I'm assuming it's a 3 or 4 piece band. Drummer can't really do much moving around, so that means there is only 2 or 3 people at the front of the stage. If you're a trio and the guitarist sings, he's glued to to mic most of the set and you are the ONLY ONE that has the job of moving around on stage and helping to get the audience into it. If I go to a punk show and the only person in a band that can move around is sitting, I'm leaving.

People go to shows to see a show. If they want to see you sit down, they can just come over and watch you on the couch.

But ultimately a big part of of punk was originally doing what you wanted and not giving a crap what other people thought. Do whatever you want, just prepare for the backlash from the people that actually stick around.

Oh really. You are saying i can't sit down while playing punk like its a rule of punk, but then you guys say in punk there are no rules. If there are no rules, then whats wrong with doing it MY way? By getting comfortable and sitting on my ass? You play your way, i will play my way. Everyones happy. The audience won't really care anyways as long as i make it look good (AKA not slouching, maybe swinging my legs and head a little).

I guess you're the new resident troll here.

You ask this question and the guy who gives you the answer that everyone is thinking is the one you want to retort like this?

I don't expect you expect to go far, so on that note it doesn't matter. But everything else seems pretty amateur. Why ask if you just want to whine about the obvious.

You're assuming that its OK to come home from work or school feeling so tired that you don't want to stand and play. Its not.

It could be health related - anything from crappy shoes, to weight issues (I have no clue where you are in regard to this - just a thought), to something more significant that I'm completely uneducated to even give suggestions on. Check in with your doc. Get some better shoes. Rock it out.

Just to jump on the bandwagon with the others... I wouldn't want to watch a punk band with one member sitting down (other than the drummer :) )

BB King, Hubert Sumlin, Johnny Winter, Les Paul, those are the guys that look cool sitting down, and only because you knew in their prime they were on their feet giving 100% to the audience. Also the artists that sat and performed next to these dudes in their later years out of respect.

Mc D's and school? Unless you have an illness don't be lazy, stand and play! Too tired? Child, please...

Man this has got to be a joke!

I broke both my legs and my lower back in a motorcycle accident when I was 19, I am now 45 and gig regularly even though it sometimes hurts like hell and I can hardly walk the next morning.

You have to love to perform, if you can't even bring yourself to stand up you might as well commit to being a bedroom player otherwise you are giving your audience and your band mates much less than they deserve.

I once criticized a guy for sitting down (not to his face) and then discovered he was actually in a wheel chair. I felt pretty silly and it's still a running joke with my band. Honestly if I saw a punk band where the bassist (who should probably be moving the most) is sitting down, I'd be liable to laugh and/or leave. I have a bad knee (surgery) and a bad back (torn and herniated disk) and I still jump and move around in my band. Heck a few shows back I jumped and my knee gave out again. I finished the last song on the ground, but I didnt just quit because yknow, it hurt. Are you sure you're ready to be gigging? Id try learning how to play standing first (despite how your legs feel, join the club) and then you can probably start playing shows. Sitting... ayayayyy

Shorten your strap a little and stand up. There's nothing saying standing MUST be totally different ergonomically from sitting when you play. I understand not wanting to stand when practicing alone, but that only applies to fretboard practice. If you're REHEARSING for a SHOW, rehearse the SHOW you'll put on. Even if you really are playing the tunes but sitting down, it's not going to feel all that different than someone sitting down and playing a CD for the audience in a way - they're there to see you punk out, not just to hear you. They can hear you anywhere, any other time.

Punk is all about rebelliousness. If the punk establishment says stand up, then say "FU establishment!" and sit down to play.

Wear a suit and tie also, that would be a HUGE rebellious FU to the "rules" which would make OP the punkest of the punks. And I think wearing a suit and tie while sitting down to play would make you an interesting signature novelty, like Angus Young and his short pants or Bootsy and his star sunglasses.

It's like the old saying: if you make a mistake, repeat the mistake and then call it jazz. If you are going to sit down, which would look bad, then, go ALL the way to where the uncool becomes cool. The suit and tie while sitting would do that.

Post pics when you do.
